To plan on getting quite drunk at my work Christmas party?

I’m started working as a nurse about 4 months ago. Next week is my teams work night out. Our ward is split into 4 teams and mines is definitely filled with the youngest people. Our band 6 really likes a drink and is quite a crazy lady I think and people really like her for it.
This is my first big girl job so I’ve never had a professional staff Christmas party before. Do people actually get super drunk or will I be embarrassing myself just by getting drunk?

@OohRains I’m ADHD too 😆🙌🏼. I think the NHS definitely attracts us

@NerrSnerr best of luck!

Westlake v ZSL London Zoo and Bellman v Northampton Recruitment are two examples of how pear-shaped things can go when things get out of hand at works Christmas dos.

So having had a quick read it seems like these were both extreme examples and both werec parties paid for by the workplace
Whereas ime at least all the Xmas parties i attended were paid for by the colleagues themselves and well away from the workplace.

I work in a multi disciplinary team that includes nurses, OTs and physiotherapists etc. People get wild.

LookItsMeAgain · 05/12/2024 12:04

My advice would be to enjoy yourself at the party but not get yourself to the point that you won't remember anything that happens during the party or that you'll make yourself sick or say something you aught not to.

So - perhaps have drinks to the point that you're merry, but not till you're piddlyeyed drunk.

Ilikemymenlikeilikemycoffee · 05/12/2024 12:07

You’ll regret it!
I work in the NHS and it was my first time out with them all, despite being here for a while. I ended up really embarrassing myself and didn’t remember getting home. I was so worried about coming back to work after the weekend!

FoxtonFoxton · 05/12/2024 12:09

Have a great time and a few drinks, but don't get pissed and ruin it for yourself. There's merry and then there's the next level. Nobody wants to deal with crying/puking/nasty/incontinent colleagues at a Christmas party (and yes, I've had to deal with someone who pissed themselves and was unable to get herself home).
There's a happy medium.

Illinoise · 05/12/2024 12:11

I would get drunk... but then I'm a chatty, friendly drunk and tend not to fight/say or do inappropriate things. I'm never sick etc. Some of my friendships have come from a work night out and lowering inhibitions a bit!

If you know you could get yourself in trouble though, then don't! Limit yourself a bit. But I come from professions where people like to drink (ex military, finance), so there's no pearl clutching and everyone has a laugh.

Oh come on! There’s being cautious and then there’s this advice.

I had a beer, or a glass of wine at work events, and then sparkling water. When people were starting to get tipsy, I left. Your workmates aren’t your friends. Plus you need to get home sober.

My workmates are very, very much my friends. And why would you need to get home sober?

Everyone is different but I don't think someone having more than one drink on a night out is going to be a huge deal for most.

And actually when i was a nurse quite a few of my workmates were also my friends as i have said Xmas night, s out were legendary.

Lookingforwardto2025 · 05/12/2024 12:15

I really wouldn’t. A colleague got very drunk at a Christmas do and ended up being lifted off the floor and taken home. I can’t remember what work she did although I am sure that over the years she did some great stuff. What I absolutely can remember is her at that Christmas do.

JRSKSSBH · 05/12/2024 12:15

Do NOT get drunk. These people are not your friends: they are colleagues.

I just don’t believe half the threads on here any more.

Do they sometimes sound like they’re all written by the same person? They do to me at times.

winterdarkness · 05/12/2024 12:18

I wouldn't. They are your colleagues and you should behave professionally around them. If you do something really stupid, you'll still have to face them on Monday.

I've seen very drunk people at Christmas parties and the embarrassment is not worth it.

FergussSingsTheBlues · 05/12/2024 12:18

People don’t tend to get shitfaced at Christmas parties in their “big girl jobs”, no. Save that stuff for being with your mates.

Don't get drunk. People will enjoy looking and laughing at you, but not in a good way.

Agree with this. Make a tit of yourself (even in a “nice” way “I love you all blah blah”) and they’ll be talking about you for years to come!

I mean, good for you, but don’t make that a piece of instruction for others.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 05/12/2024 12:20

Never, ever get drunk at a work party. Whatever you do or say drunk can never be unsaid or unseen.
Friend got legless first Christmas do at her TA job, apparently got up on a table dancing and singing, quite a posh local hotel, never lived it down. And never dared go back to the hotel.

clasmummy20 · 05/12/2024 12:22

You have got to be the same nurse as the other post about anxiety going by the user name so I feel like you need to read about how work makes you anxious in your other post and then decide whether drinking with work colleagues is going to make you worse.

I think you need some support in all seriousness!

BunnyLake · 05/12/2024 12:23

There’s been a number of threads on MN by mortified posters who are dreading going into work after their Xmas do because they got so drunk. I guess it depends on your embarrassment levels. I get easily embarrassed so I wouldn’t but your Level 6 sounds like they don’t. So base it on a scale.

Lifeomars · 05/12/2024 12:23

I like a drink and have been drunk on many occasions but never ever at a work do. It will come back to haunt you if you get wasted especially as you have been in post for such a short while. I have organised a few works dos and stayed sober throughout, one alcoholic drink at the start and then on to soft drinks. I can still remember people in senior positions being pissed out of their minds, one of them sobbing in the toilets and telling us all about a secret (up until then tho we did have our suspicions) affair that they were having with the manager of a service that we had commissioned and that she as a senior commissioner had given a huge amount funding to! He was shagging her to get the money and a scandal ensued. Never a good idea to get drunk at a work event.

Hobbesmanc · 05/12/2024 12:25

It's a night out with colleagues. Presumably booked and paid for yourself. This isn't the same as a work do paid for by your employer where there's maybe more possible restrictions and consequences

Nurses aren't saints. They don't need to set a good example when not on shift. And unless it's totally outrageous like getting arrested or shagging someone inappropriate and getting caught, then no one's going to remember or care after a few days.

Enjoy yourself. Line your stomach, don't mix your drinks, pace the night lol

Yes, absolutely. The person I had to help get home after they pissed themselves (at the table!) was the talk of the office for weeks and it was always mentioned when the yearly Christmas party rolled around. Even people who joined after said incident knew about it through gossip.
It's miserable being hammered as well -certainly suffering through the next day or days is.
I'd go for mildly sozzled OP and enjoy it.
