I have 3 children, aged 6, 3 and 5 months old. I’m currently off on maternity leave. My mother in law retired last year and would do some childcare before I was off on maternity which was great. I get along really well with her and I’m grateful for all her help however I feel like she wants to be at our house all the time (she’s not, we see her at least once a week when she picks my son up from school, coz she wants to not coz I need her to, however usually see her more though tbh, probably 3 times a week) but she’ll text me to make conversation or ask to pick my 6 yo up from school more often, or take him to his swimming lesson or ask to pick my 3 yo up from nursery. I made it clear at the start of my maternity leave that I want to enjoy spending as much time and doing as much as I can with my children as possible before going back to work as this is my last baby. She said she understood and was fine with this. I normally take my 6yo to his swimming lesson and my husband will take him to his football training/games when I had my 3rd baby I couldn’t drive and so she said she’d take my 6yo to his swimming lesson which she did a couple of times , as did my husband, I was really appreciative of her help but as I said, I made it clear I was doing it as it was my thing to do together with my 6yo and things were going back to how they were when I could drive again (3 weeks later), but she keeps asking to take him to his lesson and asks in front of my son so my son is like yey so I feel I have to say yes. I find myself getting so annoyed with her, I dread if I see she has text me or called which is really bad as I don’t want to feel that way. Like I say, we do get on and have a good relationship. She asked to take my 6yo last week and I ended up saying yes coz I felt bad, I asked her to come to ours at 5pm as that was enough time for me to give him dinner and do his homework before swimming, she then turned up at 4.20 with my 3 year old who she picked up from nursery (she wanted to get him and so I agreed but plan was still to come at 5pm) and there was noway my 6yo can get his homework done with my 3 yo about, so the routine went out the window which is fine as a one off it’s more the fact she’s just completely ignored what I asked (which was a big thing for me to do coz I don’t normally do that, I would normally just go with the flow, but I thought I’m just gona set boundaries) and then she just did what she liked and turned when she wanted. She only lives 10 mins away, so it’s not like she was travelling far , I said jokingly to her “oh you’re so early we’ve not had a chance to do homework or have dinner” and laughed and she said “sorry” but she deliberately turned up early, we were seeing her the next day when she picks my 6yo up from school. Taking my son to his swimming lesson is my thing with him and I feel she keeps trying to butt in or take over. We were away for a weekend for a family birthday (my mums side of the family) and it was a jam packed weekend and she kept messaging me sending me different toys that my 6yo would like for his birthday (his birthday is a month away), and asking me to ask him. I get she wants to get him a good present but we just saw her the day before and he picked out things for her to get, and we were only away a couple of nights, 1 full day, which she knew, yet she felt the need to be messaging me about something that could wait til we got home. There are other small things she does so it is probably just an accumulation of everything but I just feel like I need a break from her. If she asks me if she can take my son swimming and I say no I always feel really bad and then can’t sleep for thinking I don’t want any friction, but I’ve already said to her it’s our thing. Don’t really know what sort of advice I’m looking for or if I just need to vent. Thanks for reading so far.
