Why has Welby not resigned?

Along with the at least 6 bishops and providence knows however many others within the organisation who were aware of this evil man’s conduct.

Listening to him tie himself in knots, trying to distance/excuse his inaction is despicable.

He’s an utterly vile man who believes he is untouchable. Hopefully the King, as head of the Church, will sack him.

The head of Church would have to have more spine....

NewGreenDuck · 10/11/2024 14:30

Because they are all utterly disgraceful. And they look after their own.

2triangles · 10/11/2024 14:27

Do they have anglican cardinals?

JennyForeigner · 10/11/2024 14:23

Welby has the look of a man who will 'consider' resigning till the end of time but somehow always find the particularly self-serving piety in himself to stay on.

Should've been a cardinal.

Surely it goes beyond him resigning, it should now also be a police matter and Welby and the others who covered this up should be investigated.

Does make one wonder why so many seemed quite so keen to cover this up, doesn’t it? Call me cynical.

Because it's the tip of the iceberg.

caringcarer · 10/11/2024 14:17

He thinks he is above the rest of us and can do as he pleases.

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/11/2024 14:15

Two archbishops were involved by the way. George Carey was sent the 1982 report on Smyth's behaviour but conveniently doesn't remember reading it“

Beyond belief. Unless of course such reports weren’t unusual.

The whole episode is revolting.

I misguidedly thought the CoE might show more compassion towards victims than the Catholic Church when it tried to cover up abuse by priests. But if anything this is worse. We all know the victims were sadistically abused. They have delayed investigating until after the perpetrator is dead despite knowing about the abuse for more than forty years. They even delayed after 2013 when there was still time to secure a conviction.

And this is just one case. If everyone involved in this one case in the 1980s thought it was best to try and cover up sadistic sexual abuse of teenage boys then we can guess that wherever other allegations were made similar cover ups took place.

GrouchyKiwi · 10/11/2024 14:10

I don't understand either.

We've had cases of child abuse in the church I grew up in. The police got involved, the perpetrators were rightly convicted and sent to prison, and (in most cases, not all, I'm not going to pretend that church is perfect) procedures were changed to ensure it was less likely to happen again.

But when it happens in the Anglican - and indeed Catholic - church nothing is done except platitudes spoken. It is terrible.

So he knew that this man was an abuser and helped cover it up and actively helped the perpetrator escape justice?

I hope this story gets a lot of publicity and that this spineless enabler resigns in disgrace.

I don’t understand why enabling a paedophile isn’t a crime? Any why there isn’t more of an outcry about this?

I find this odd, especially as handling stolen goods is a crime, as is aiding a criminal, unless of course that criminal is a peadophile supported by one of the most power men in the UK.

Apart from wanting to protect the church (and his own power) at all costs, I really believe that men like Welby don't actually "get it". I'm not being a male apologist before anyone jumps on me.

Sorry, what? He doesn’t get that torturing and sodomising little children is wrong?

Would that be King Charles who sought marriage guidance from his chum Saville?
Doubt it.

Will King Charles rescind the honour he bestowed on Welby last December?
He admitted him to the Royal Victorian Order - this is a personal honour in the gift of the monarch.

Dude, he doesn’t even believe in the bible. He’s a churchian, not a Christian and he‘ll do anything to maintain his position at the top of that tree

Neither do I. Wouldn’t throw innocents to the dogs though for the sake of my personal position.

A Christian who actually practices the religion wouldn’t either.

He is awful, but he’s centralised power in himself and he’s chosen few. He won’t go anywhere.

DoubleMM · 10/11/2024 13:04

victims just did not feature as even one of his concerns. He sent the guy abroad to carry on abusing.

Because so many supporters of the church agree with him and his views, if they didn’t we would have a large number vocally protesting against him, but we don’t.

AngsanaFlower · 10/11/2024 12:49

Because he thinks he’s too important, untouchable and chosen by God.

People should refuse to go to church or engage with him till he resigns.
