Labour voters - do you regret voting for them?

They got off to a really bad start and it's just gone downhill ever since. Within a couple of weeks we practically had martial law, we've had riots you name it. Law and order has completely broken down. They've cut the pensioners fuel allowance and all the while they've had their snouts in the trough. 2 tier Keir approval rating has fallen off a cliff - the country has had enough already lol.

Aibu to think that those who voted them in should apologise.

No, don’t regret voting for them and probably won’t for a long time. The Tories ruined public services in this country and Labour are trying to sort it out.

ToWhitToWhoo · 23/09/2024 16:01

I voted LibDem, not Labour; but I am relieved to have the present government instead of the previous lot. There are some things that I disagree with, like the WFA cuts (it would have been better to include it in taxable income IMO); but overall they are much more trustworthy than the previous lot.

As regards your other specific points:

(1) i don't approve of political leaders accepting donations, and I would like to see the rules tightened up; but far worse was happening under the previous lot.

(2) How on earth is the new government responsible for the riots? They didn't start them! They dealt with them promptly. And any underlying causes ranging from poverty, poor education, unemployment, etc. in certain areas to insufficient policing were longstanding problems, and could not have been reversed by the new government within just 3 weeks.

(3) When have we had martial law? Or a complete breakdown in law and order (more than in the past)? And is it even possible to have both at the same time?

(4) The '2 tier Keir' accusations are baseless: just a vile slander by the Reform scumbags, and even worse Tommy Robinson supporters; not even coming from the Tories.

As already indicated, I don't think the government is perfect. Governments are governments, and always tend to be somewhat self-interested and short-term-ist, and need continual holding to account. But we're not here comparing Starmer;s lot with perfection; we're comparing them with Sunak's incompetent government; the even worse misgovernments of Johnson and Truss; and the likelihood of the next Tory leader being worse than Sunak at any rate

What I do regret is that we have any Reform influence at all. I am aware that the extent of the Labour victory is partly due to those scumbags splitting the right-of-centre vote; and I would probably prefer to have a somewhat lower Labour majority and more Tory MPs surviving if it meant that Farage and his vile cohorts were totally crushed.

Undercoverstory · 23/09/2024 15:59

No, I've been really pleased with the start they've made and don't recognise the "disaster" you speak of at all.

They've resolved long running industrial disputes, made anyone working in education feel more positive about the future than they have for a really long time, recognised that the NHS needs much more than more money. I think the prisons minister appointment was inspired and support the early release of prisoners, who were going to be released in the next few weeks anyway, to free up space in a ridiculously high prison population.

The riots, IMO, were stirred up by a right wing press, in response to the election result and handled really well by the new government.

poetryandwine · 23/09/2024 15:59

Yes, @Daltonbear1 , the OP posted on 30 June that she would be voting Reform. She waited until 2 July before posting her ‘concern’ that absenteeism (presumably amongst government employees) would rise under Labour.

OP, I would laugh in derision at your misuse of the term ‘martial law’ except that it is an insult to all who have experienced the real thing

Daltonbear1 · 23/09/2024 15:54

Are you a reform voter did you see their conference old Nigel has made it so that it's very difficult to remove him. This is because reform don't respect democracy. Also he said he won't meet his constituents in his office because of worried about being hurt which is bollox it's an excuse to do no work. I have no regrets with labour as uou can't blame the riots on them you can blame that on the far right. I also want a fucking apology for 14 years of shit show tories that I never voted for them.
Talking about nose in trough none of the press gave a shit when Boris got his food paid already a year 24000 pounds that's more than an average wage nearly. Plus all the other shit he got. What there is is one rule for the tories and a much higher standard for labour. I see through posts like this and farage gets loads of money from putin Russian traitor to the west.

newnamethanks · 23/09/2024 15:42

YABU. I'll expect an apology from Labour after the nation receives an apology from the oafish, loutish Tory party for the 14 years of grifting to enrich themselves and their grabby mates. Nothing Labour has done, or will do, can compare against the looting of public money that the pirates of the Tory party have carried out. Laughing at the taxpayers all the way while picking their pockets.

BridgetJonesBigPants · 23/09/2024 15:38

Not in the slightest.

Pirri · 23/09/2024 15:30

No I don't regret it. I'm slightly left of centre, always voted labour until Corbyn and voted conservative in 2019.

I was very indifferent to Starmer but he's grown on me. Not keen on Angela Raynor but Lammy is the one I'm appalled at. Surely, surely there was someone better than him for that job?

The riots were dealt with in a way I could not improve on.
Clothesgate - badly handled but fundementally these people are not wealthy like Sunak. The PM and partner represent the UK on the world stage and should look the part. Either an allowance or wear clothing made in Britain by British designers and manufacturers.
Winter fuel. Yes it looks bad and could have been slightly more generous. If they had announced it at the budget among a lot of things hitting the wealthy it would have been less controversial. That would have been too late to stop it this year.

AceofPentacles · 23/09/2024 15:28

No, why would I ?

piscofrisco · 23/09/2024 15:27

No I don't regret it.
I think they have done alot of good already that had been ingnored. I wish they had not cut winter fuel allowance from as many people, but I do think it should be means tested. They haven't got that right. And I'm disappointed in the cash for glasses shite...

But overall I think they have made a decent start. And they are a million times better than what we had before.

Whereissummer24 · 23/09/2024 15:26

Difficult .. tory party were a sh1t show.. I voted tactically for the first itne to get them out. Honestly they are as bad as each other

Jumpingthruhoops · 23/09/2024 15:22

I disagree. Not a Tory voter by any means but I think this is why people say: 'Better the devil you know'.
I genuinely don't think 2-Tier Kier and his lot have a clue and, let's face it, they only really got in because they were deemed slightly less shit than the Tories. Which is hardly an accolade...

Anyone using two tier Kier unironically is definitely a Tory voter

Sinisterdexter · 23/09/2024 15:23

Too early to say.
We need to wait at least 2 years to form a fair opinion.

Anything is better than the Tories.

Jumpingthruhoops · 23/09/2024 15:22

gokartdillydilly · 23/09/2024 13:34

Anything is better than those twats we had in power before. Anything.

SilverPuffin · 23/09/2024 15:22

Do I regret voting Labour? No

Do I agree with everything they do? Also no

Am I relieved that the GE ridded us of the most corrupt, incompetent and cruel government this country has seen in a long time? Absolutely yes

Am I sick of the lying, biased and self-serving excuse we have for media in this country. Also yes

randomchap · 23/09/2024 15:20

Mrsdyna · 23/09/2024 15:19

There's no point asking that here, Mumsnetters live in la la land and they have their fingers in their ears 😂

Well the Tory voters do, that's for certain

There was a thread started on this last week

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5167004-are-you-glad-you-voted-labour

I'm a little disappointed in the poor effort by CCHQ, they could at least try to keep track of the threads they start

Labour have been in for less than 3 months, and have not had chance to produce a budget yet.

If the Tories were in during the riots, then the chat from them would be blaming the asylum seekers for being in hotels rather than blaming the racist cunts who rioted.

Happyinarcon · 23/09/2024 15:16

You can’t blame voters for a dysfunctional government. No one votes for incompetence

1apenny2apenny · 23/09/2024 15:13

@JandLandG - I agree that the last 5 prime ministers were appalling however the worst one ever, without a doubt, was Tony Blair.

rumblegrumble · 23/09/2024 15:12

Didn't vote Labour as in a Tory/Lib Dem area, I very likely would have if I lived in an area where it would've helped. I didn't have high hopes at all but the Tories really were done and so I didn't think there was any choice. I stand by that opinion, even though so far they have been far, far worse than I feared they would be.

They seem to have absolutely zero understanding of business and economics; every day there's another ridiculous statement seemingly designed to terrify the corporate world and scare off anyone contemplating investment. A man who's worked in the private sector for a total of one whole year declaring that he knows more about running a company than JP Morgan and Amazon, and that he'd happily tell them so?! And there I was thinking the Conservatives were embarrassing.

And that's obviously ignoring the fuel payments, the prisoner releases (and then the extreme heavy-handed policing of certain other criminals), the grubby displays of naked greed, the seeming endorsement of medical care being denied to people who had the wrong political views, the dangerous and misguided foreign policy announcements, the immediate surrender to the unions which has - surprise surprise - made everyone already up their demands, the endless and predictable buck-passing and invented excuses... etc, etc. I guess it's true that we need to hit rock-bottom before we can recover - dear god, I hope the opposition stops pissing about soon and starts developing some ideas of how to rebuild.

It’s so odd to me that people expect Labour to have turned around the entire country in under 3 months after it was slowly decimated by the Tories for years.

This. If the OP isn't a troll / bot I'd love to know what they think they should have done.

How were the riots the fault of Labour? I put that squarely at the door of the party that has been practising dog whistle racism for the last 14 hears and who emboldened the racists through the self harm that was brexit.
Snouts in the trough?! Some silly choices, yes, but it is no way whatsoever compares to the atrocious behaviour from the Tories since 2010. PPE scandal, anyone?

These posts are getting increasingly desperate.

Beautiful3 · 23/09/2024 14:56

I didn't vote Labour, my fil did. He regrets voting them in completely. Can't ever see them being voted in for years now.

StEthelburgaRose · 23/09/2024 14:51

You'd have to be a bit dim to blame the riots on Labour. They'd only been in power 5 minutes. As for Labour voters apologising. I'd love tory and brexit voters to apologise for trashing the country please.
We've bumbled out of the single market like idiots. This has had no benefits, only damage.
All public services have been trashed under the tories.
We've got into terrible debt.
The tories and the right wing press have whipped up racism and anger. See riots.
