To think parents should at least iron uniforms

I see some children on the way to school and they look so scruffy, I mean I might be being a bit mean but it’s important to me that my children look presentable, I can’t imagine sending my children into school with a mega creased jumper/cardigan it looks awful.

OP posts:
Harry12345 · 20/09/2024 08:10

I’m the exact same, my mum didn’t let me leave the house without clothes ironed, i can’t help but judge a little if I see a school shirt totally creased, it looks awful, but that’s the only thing I ever judge and I know it’s a me issue

WeAreWhereWeAre · 20/09/2024 08:10

I used to religiously iron everything on a Sunday afternoon. It took around two hours and I hated it. Yet every day they'd come back from school looking scruffy.

So I gave up. I just do 'wash and hang' now. Nothing gets ironed and I have a free two hours on a Sunday.

Thepeopleversuswork · 20/09/2024 08:09

If I wanted to judge anyone (I don’t because each to their own) I might be tempted to judge parents who prioritise ironing and having a pristine house rather than spending that time with their children and having a lived in relaxed home.

And this…

Judgment works both ways OP and you might find that others judge you for prioritising ironing over things like education and happiness.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 20/09/2024 08:09

I only iron the white polo's, I don't bother ironing the sweatshirts or trousers. You would probably judge me as a parent too for sending my child in with mud stains on his white polo shirts...which have been washed obviously but not everything comes out.

Amberpants · 20/09/2024 08:09

I don’t even own an iron, my child never looks scruffy though 🤔 don’t think I’ve ever seen a creased jumper or cardigan

I dont iron a thing
It's why crease release was invented
Couple of sprays,job done

Oh does that actually work? Was going to get some for bedding.

Leafcutterantsarecool · 20/09/2024 08:07

Presentable is subjective.

I’m a SAHM so in theory I have time to iron school uniform. In reality my kids show up to school fed, clean, wearing correct uniforms, with appropriate kit, on time, every day. I regard kids that don’t get all that as vastly more of an issue than my children’s washed and well fitting (if occasionally slightly stained) uniform being slightly crumpled.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 20/09/2024 08:07

All of my dc’s uniform was non iron and if you don’t spin it in high speed and take it out of the washer quickly it looks fine. A few minutes tumble then hang was also good.

If I wanted to judge anyone (I don’t because each to their own) I might be tempted to judge parents who prioritise ironing and having a pristine house rather than spending that time with their children and having a lived in relaxed home.

I haven't ironed anything since the 1990's! Seriously, I don't even own an iron.

Life is way too short to iron.

I feel I have found my people on this thread 😁

drspouse · 20/09/2024 08:06

I iron my own stuff or send it to the ironing service.
I don't iron joggers or polo shirts, or indeed jumpers or hoodies, so that's the kids school clothes out.
I'll be buying non iron when DD goes to secondary.
I'm pretty sure it isn't affecting my DCs education and if you are judging them I'm pretty sure we'll live. If I was thinking you'd be my friend I'm sure I'll live too.

Thepeopleversuswork · 20/09/2024 08:06

Sorry no. I’m a single mother in a very stressful job working on an average day from 8am to well beyond 6. On top of which is all the housework and life admin. I literally don’t have time.

My DD’s uniform is of the sort where ironing makes a marginal difference and I’m not making my life significantly more stressful than it already is for some judgement stickybeak with too much time on their hands.

My DD looks presentable enough with clean uniform. Ironing is a long way down the list of things I need to get done in the day below keeping a roof over her head, keeping the house clean and allowing myself to grab a couple of hours sleep. Judge away, if you don’t have the sensitivity to realise not everyone is like you then I couldn’t care less what you think.

I haven't ironed anything since a job interview in 2011.

I'm past caring about ironing. Our CEO wears tracksuit bottoms and Birkenstocks. Most of the management team in my office wear leggings or dungarees etc. I think smart clothes are becoming a thing of the past. It's better to be comfortable.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 20/09/2024 08:04

My daughter has just started school and DP ironed her shirts before she started. None have been done since. They don't even look that creased when they come out of the wash/tumble dryer so why would I bother?

I'm more bothered by the fact we're expected to send them in full uniform yet they're painting every day and not allowed to use aprons (only for water play apparently). I didn't expect to have so many stained and ruined shirts in week 2 of school. They even have a bloody mud kitchen to play with in the yard.

DP and I have 6 jobs between us, breakfast clubs and after school clubs to contend with, another child at nursery 3 days a week and no family help. So no, ironing uniform is nowhere near the top of my priority list.

My mum never ironed my uniform and I survived. Never looked unkempt and no one ever said I looked scruffy - my secondary school had daily uniform inspections too where kids were sent home for looking less than pristine.

blackteaplease · 20/09/2024 08:04

OP I was going to get really cross with you but I've seen your responses and you've acknowledged you are an ironing freak.

Pre-kids DH and I used to iron our work clothes. 3 kids later I barely have time to keep on top of washing drying and putting away clothes. Ironing has been long abandoned.

Flidina · 20/09/2024 08:04

Absolutely hated ironing school uniform when my kids were younger, thankfully mine are grown now, They went out looking immaculate, but still managed to come back looking like scarecrows! Complete waste of time, wish I'd had a penny for each school uniform I've ironed over the years, with 6 kids, I'd be well off now! 🤣, I don't iron anything now.

Edingril · 20/09/2024 08:02

Omg why won't someone think of the children!?!?!? How can people carry on!

longestlurkerever · 20/09/2024 08:01

cuu · 20/09/2024 08:00

Why judge her? Maybe the other parent is in charge of ironing.

Children don't need to care about how they look.

cuu · 20/09/2024 08:01

Charlemagnee · 20/09/2024 07:56

Oh I feel shitty now 🤣 I don’t judge their parenting by it at all and I work 24 hours a week so probably have the time. Everybody has a thing I suppose and mine is ironing 🤣

Maybe you should set up an ironing business then

Burntout101 · 20/09/2024 08:01

It's fine, you can feel smug and superior about your children looking polished while we, the great unironed, can continue to look scruffy and don't have to waste time ironing! Win -win !

longestlurkerever · 20/09/2024 08:00

You say its important to you that your children look presentable but gave you asked yourself why? There are probably things that are important to me in raising my children that aren't important to you.

DoreenonTill8 · 20/09/2024 08:00

Bushmillsbabe · 20/09/2024 07:59

I don't iron.
I do make sure they are in clean weather appropriate clothes and hair is neatly tied back, as hard to learn with hair all over their face, and they have a nutritious packed lunch which gives them energy to learn. I focus on the things that help them learn, a non ironed shirt never stopped a child from learning so it's not a priority for us

Yep! Do you also iron your judgy pants OP or does all that hoiking get the creases out on their own?

cuu · 20/09/2024 08:00

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 20/09/2024 07:58

It's the ones with kids who look scruffy but mum has clearly spent a couple of hours pressing her own clothes, straightening her hair and putting makeup on thay make me judgy.

Why judge her? Maybe the other parent is in charge of ironing.

I don’t iron a thing other than my husbands shirts.

My 7 year old also does her own hair - I can only imagine how much you’re judging us in the school run😂

We’re in this zone too! DD has just learned how to put her hair up in a ponytail. Still a bit more work needed on the technique though 😂. And yesterday’s jumper gets pulled out of the bottom of the school bag and put on if still clean. People probably look at her and this what a scruff bag but she’s clean and happy so 🤷🏻‍♀️
