This is a letter from a female employee of John Lewis's Cheadle branch. John Lewis told its female employees that they have to share toilets and locker rooms with trans identifying men. The employee says this is having a terrible effect especially on colleagues who have experienced trauma relating to men or who have religious reasons to not want to share a space with someone who is the opposite sex.

You don’t have an argument when you use discriminatory and derogatory terms I’m afraid.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/08/2024 20:52

I like JL, and I really don't care.

What is a trans identifying man? Does it mean trans man?

No, it means a man who identifies as (a) trans(woman).

Happyher · 29/08/2024 20:52

Why is it the women’s spaces that have to be gender neutral? Make the men’s spaces the gender neutral ones, then the problem is solved. Trans men then get the option to use either

But that's completely different - people still have the opportunity to choose single sex toilets.

Not really. In some buildings you’d have a long walk.

😂😂😂 no love.

A women who will be sharing these spaces. It’s really not an issue.

Sit down for this next bit, I wouldn’t want you to hurt yourself.

Unisex toilets are also not an issue.

Are you the only woman on MN to use unisex toilets? Confused

Elphamouche · 29/08/2024 20:49

Missmarple87 · 29/08/2024 20:44

For YOU, love.

Why is it so difficult to get your around the fact that many women want and need single sex spaces? Just because you don't see the issue, you're happy for them to be unable to participate fully in public life? Why on earth would you take that stance?

Why is it so hard for people to understand that not everyone wants to boycott somewhere though? It’s funny how people will argue the toss on one side, without even considering the other side.

I understand for the minority, there could be an issue. However, for the majority there should be no issue other than prejudice.

As someone who has trans friends, it’s DISGUSTING how they are treated by people who they wouldn’t even notice.

Threads like these, calling for the public to boycott a shop on an issue that will not impact the public, are awful.

For those who have genuine reasons, and aren’t just transphobic, then these should be raised. Not just because of a bias.

Where are the trans men getting changed? Are they in with the women too?

I think people are being allowed to go in the room according to whatever gender they identify with at the time

ReadingWorm · 29/08/2024 20:46

Lovelyview · 29/08/2024 20:45

Otherwise known as a trans woman or a man who identifies as a woman.

Another one throwing insults around yet expecting debate.

@ssd I can't link Google nurse, Scotland, equality act suspended

LadyGilley · 29/08/2024 20:37

How is it helping female employees to organise a boycott when, if successful, this will lead to them losing their jobs? Department stores are already badly struggling.

Write a letter of complaint, but for the love of God, do not do something that will threaten the livelihood of the staff.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 29/08/2024 20:37

cheekaa · 29/08/2024 17:40

I wonder if this may soon apply to the toilets used by female customers?

It already does in our local JL. That is why I no longer shop there.

Herewegoagainandagainandagain · 29/08/2024 20:36

At least 3 members of my family's workplaces and also my own have similar policies. All big UK brand/service names. While I do not agree with the policy, you will be buying their products/services regularly.

Boycotting just JL is meaningless. This is a government issue and many individual companies hands are tied. If you want to take meaningful action , instead of boycotting JL write to your MP or attend their surgeries and ask them what you can do about this issue.

As for the letter it is ineffective. The author, by their own admission can afford not to work, "resigning" is not a hardship for them undermining the gesture and the issue itself, it comes across more as attention seeking than a meaningful stand.

Missmarple87 · 29/08/2024 20:36

ilovesooty · 29/08/2024 20:33

Absolutely.

They'd probably stop if you could answer the question as to why you're so happy to throw vulnerable/religious women under the bus and override accepted safeguarding norms to satisfy the delusions of a minority?

Elphamouche · 29/08/2024 20:35

Missmarple87 · 29/08/2024 20:09

Nextdoor55 · 29/08/2024 20:34

No. Honestly no.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 29/08/2024 20:33

Im shocked by how many women on this thread dont seem to think that men in womens loos is an issue for them.
Thanks for posting about this op. We already no longer have a local branch of JL sadly.
