to tell son NOT to post memes of black people

Please help me . Huge row with 11 year old.

His friend posted a meme of a black person with "bombastic side eye".

He wants to repost it to some silly comment.

I said it is wrong and not the right thing to do even if the person "bombastic side eye" posted it himself on tin tok.

Please give me your thoughts.

Side eye applies to anyone - nothing racist.

Bombastic applies to anyone - nothing racist.

“Bombastic evolved as an adjective to describe something (or someone!) that is overly wordy, pompous, or pretentious, but the adjective is most often used to describe language (speech or writing).”

🙄

localnotail · 17/08/2024 17:04

Why is it racist?

Constantcookies · 17/08/2024 16:49

This. You’ve articulated it so perfectly. It’s not obviously or blatantly racist but I can see where the concern from the Op is coming from. I think there’s a stat that shows black peope are disproportionately represented in memes or at least the popular memes that are used.

The largest group of the world's population is black so hardly surprising if that is reflected on line.... but yeah racism /s

ODFOD now you can't post memes?

Bit of a straw man argument - neither myself nor the poster I am quoting said that.

I won’t engage further as it’s clear you’re someone who will make passive aggressive comments when people are trying to explain nuanced topics around race.

mazxim · 17/08/2024 13:40

Yes. That is my point. We live in an asian country and kids go to international school.

I grew up in Britain. I said although you do not think it is racist, it is in fact a. racist action, and this is not for entertainment. He said what if I posted a white person. I said you need to understand the history of black people, and you shouldn't post just because others do.

You've lost the plot and need to get a grip.

its a meme of a black guy giving the side eye

If it's saying he's giving bombastic side eye then it's actually praising him. It's not 'disgusting side eye.'

Constantcookies · 17/08/2024 16:49

Flossietheflosser · 17/08/2024 15:04

I’ve noticed that memes that are used to convey emotion disproportionally involve laughing at exaggerated displays of black people. I sat in a business update at work where the speaker used meme after meme of ‘sassy black women stereotypes’ to convey humour in his presentation. I’ m black and found it racist. I was the only black person in the room.

DeadbeatYoda · 17/08/2024 16:47

This is absurd. The meme is nothing to do with the guy's skin colour. Can't you tell? Have you not seen it online before? It's the expression of incredulity that people want to put across. The guy in the meme does it perfectly.
Maybe you ought to learn a bit about meme culture before you go wringing your hands at your son, you will be able to offer useful guidance rather than proving you are so out of touch that he can ignore you.

He's legally too young for WhatsApp and tik tok.

Tell him if he posts it you will ban him from the apps until he shows he is mature enough to be allowed to use them, then follow through by confiscating his phone and replacing it with a dumb phone.

Legally? What statute does that fall under?

I dont see how it is racist, and I'm of Caribbean descent?

NCmybloodyfather · 17/08/2024 16:43

Calm down @Zow - I didn't post it as a 'gotcha'. It contributes to the discussion, and the OP asked for opinions.
But god forbid that you're ever confronted with a new thought, eh.

Oh and I used that lady because her expression was the funniest. I suppose I could’ve used this one instead.

I’d be concerned that if it’s primarily black people who feature in the memes, that it’s to do with the high contrast between the whites of the eyes and the colour of the skin that make it so ‘funny’. And that would be then the racist stance on it. But I am not black, and I am not an expert. But that to me, would be why it’s different if it’s a pic of a black person compared to white.

What?

@BlackPanther75 I can't tell whether you are being sarcastic or not with your post.

I think it's fine for a white person to laugh at a black person and vice versa if it's in the context of comedy. For example, Will Smith has had some brilliant lines during his career that make me laugh. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Of course they were being sarcastic. No one in their right mind would think that.

InkyPinkyPonky24 · 17/08/2024 16:32

HollyKnight · 17/08/2024 16:28

There is a HUGE difference between laughing at a black person being funny and laughing at a person for being black because you think that is funny.

Completely agree with you.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 17/08/2024 16:31

Oh and this is for those posters saying he should then get banned from his phone for daring to question you...

Absolutely NOT! Punishing him for having a different opinion immediately is a sure fire way to push him towards negative opinions in secret. Instead having an open and frank discussion about why your opinions differs and why each think they are right is far better. If he continues to insist something provably offensive then consider consequences. But go in open minded. You might change your opinion too.

@ButWhatAboutTheBees I don't tend to take notice of usernames when reading posts so wouldn't have linked it to previous.

I agree, context is key.

For goodness sake, this was a meme created by a black person!

She gave it the photo, the name and the context, but it can't be shared because it's racist?
You've way over-reacted @mazxim . I'm sure you meant well, but this was not worth having a huge row over and damaging your relationship with your son.
