Sciatica /slipped disc

Posting here for volume of answers.
Yesterday I moved normally and my lower back suddenly felt like it was being compressed and the pain was awful. Since then pain down one leg. The pain is like cramp but the worst cramp ever. Leg is much worse than back.
I have been screaming all night, literally in so much pain I couldn’t help it, worse than child birth. Couldn’t sit, lay or even perch. Even standing which was when it was best, it was at 9 out of 10. Hubby called 111 and paramedics were sent as I had a pulmonary embolism in Jan and I was screaming with the leg pain and he wanted to be sure it wasn’t that again. They told me to take codiene and paracetamol but it’s not doing anything really significant. They said it was sciatica, possible slipped disc causing it. What can I do to calm the pain. Obviously I’ll call dr tomorrow. Can’t take nsaids as I’m on blood thinners for blood clots. I’ve had no sleep either. Can’t use topical creams for the same reason. Anyone had similar? Can anyone tell me what worked for you? Can’t stand for days though I can just about not cry if I stand. Can’t lay to sleep. Help please? I’m exhausted but the pain won’t let me lay or sit. How long will this go on for?

Unfortunately my parents spent a lot of their money trying to help my sister and have ended up with very little. They just don’t have it to give to me in full. I feel bad even asking after seeing what my only sibling has done to them over the years.

I'm so sorry this has happened. Take care @Allofaflutter I hope you get some help soon & feel better. You've had such a rough time of it, it's awful that someone is causing trouble on top of everything you are going through.

Allofaflutter · 04/05/2024 19:26

She always does. She’s now contacted my other family members spreading poison. Apparently I’m just faking to get attention and drugs and I’ll take any money and use it for drugs. She’s even contacted my husbands brother saying the same.

She’s using my threads as proof. I asked Mumsnet to remove them but they won’t.

A&E refused to even do a mri.
sending all the best healing wishes.

A&E don't do MRI's. They refer onwards.

This thread is very strange.

A+E certainly can and do MRIs unfortunately with current he'd pressures they often don't nowadays
OP I wish you well. With the scan findings posted earlier you should have this operated on. Keep pushing your GP.

buffyslayer · 04/05/2024 19:40

@RainbowZebraWarrior they can send you for one immediately. It happened to me twice

They said they were going to then the dr asked his higher up and he said no so they must do them in A&E just not for me.

@RainbowZebraWarrior Emergency head and spinal MRIs are done in many A&E Departments for time critical neurological events eg cauda equina syndrome

When you say strange are you saying I’m making it all up? Why would I do that ffs.

I’ve had MRIs at A&E as well - I mean obviously the actual MRI scanner isn’t in A&E but they send yon and it’s their time slot you go in.

that’s so useful. I can show it to Gp and say they need to do something.

That says I should have had the mri at A&E. why do they have these guidelines if they don’t follow them?

OP posts:
RainbowZebraWarrior · 04/05/2024 20:15

My apologies. I have spinal issues, and I know that A&E do perform MRI's in certain situations.

A lot of people think that if they go to A&E they will 'bypass' the system. Obviously this is often not the case.

I saw the post directed at the family member, and the post about MNHQ not allowing deletion of your thread, and thought it all sounded a bit off.

I'm sorry, I shouldn't be policing anyone's pain, medical conditions or threads.

You have my utmost sympathy. OP. As I say, I'm in a similar boat with spinal issues, and wouldn't wish them on anyone.

Allofaflutter · 04/05/2024 20:17

So who is best at reading mris, the person giving the report or the dr on call?

Apology accepted. Shit family isn’t unusual unfortunately. I just am trying to ignore her atm. She doesn’t have my number but has been trying via sm to me and everyone close to me. I can post the mn reply from Kim at hq if anyone wants.

Now my mum is worried if I do have surgery as my sister has said I’ll probably die. So now doesn’t want me to have it. Disability v death.

The person doing the report is the expert on reading scans. Though an experienced spinal or neurosurgeon will be better at transferring that to what can be done. An A+E dr will be the least expert of the 3.
Feel free to message me though I'm jot sure how much I can help. I'm no expert. But GPs can try and put some pressure on secondary care.

Why would you die? Its no riskier than any other surgery with your personal risks. But the surgeon can tell you what the risks are. You need to see a spinal or neurosurgeon.
If I saw you with your history and that scan I would be trying to get them to see you urgently.
