Pronouns at work

mrsclaus1984 · 08/01/2024 21:36

HR has mandated that from now on we are to include our pronouns in our email signatures.

I don’t wish to do this and am being threatened with formal action.

I feel I should add I don’t consider myself to be transphobic/ homophobic/ general LGBTQ+ phobic.. but I have an issue with being forced to do this.

They are also talking about us addressing any new colleages with gender neutral pronouns until we know for definite how they wish to be addressed.

Does anyone know where I might stand from an employment law point of view in terms of the action which may be taken against me? I’d be so grateful for any advice please.

Getting a bit worried now😕

Ask them why they are forcing you to put yourself publicly in work

Tell them that they are making you feel unsafe and ther conduct is transphobic because they are forcing everyone to be out when they might not be comfortable

Wanna17 · 08/01/2024 22:12

Yeah, why should women want to protect themselves? 🙄

Protect themselves from what?

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 08/01/2024 22:16

Out yourself not put yourself 🤦

Wanna17 · 08/01/2024 22:18

@Pandajane is that a serious question? You can't be that biased surely?

Nobody here endorses that, and using the murder of a child to support a tenuous political point is pretty low, whatever your personal investment.

It's been proven time and again that being outed at work as a woman counts against you in terms of respect, progression pay, etc most men won't get aggressive towards other men have zero issues getting aggressive with a woman its why we prefer to stay neutral because "a,tree" as a signature gets more respect than "Ms a, tree"

Again no-one is harassing trans people in fact there are many who don't want to be outed so they don't get harassed enforced pronouns help no-one and don't serve any purpose at all the trans people I know fucking hate them especially when they are beginning their journey they either have to come out and declare themselves or stick with something triggering

Not helpful at all

Show me a single post on here that has ever advocated murdering trans whether adult or children. Just one.

Saying transwomen are still men is not murder, not even violent.
Saying TW have no place in women's prisons, sports or safe spaces is not murdering them.

Good luck to them, wear what you like, present however you choose, but no man will ever become a woman whatever they wear and whatever surgery they have.

No Hate. Just Facts.

MrInbetween · 08/01/2024 22:24

@Pandajane if you spot any harassment of trans people on MN please do report it. There are strict guidelines on what is and is not allowed.

Now admittedly I’ve not read the guidelines but I’m going to guess inciting murder is against the rules. However, I’m struggling to see where the OP made that suggestion but happy to be corrected.

Who's teaching their children to "harass and murder" trans people?

The hyperbole is just so fucking ridiculous, there is no genocide, trans people are not being murdered at higher rates than other groups, there is no evidence or statistic that support the 'most marginalised group' rhetoric.

For goodness sakes, every single adult in the world doesn't need to wear a badge or add a line to their emails saying she/her or he/him to appease the small minority of attention seeking wazzocks who think having the wrong pronoun mentioned in their general vicinity is 'literal violence'.

And has someone on this thread said we should get together and kill trans people?

hoarahloux · 08/01/2024 22:28

Sounds great. Inclusive. I can't see the problem.

Fireyflies · 08/01/2024 22:32

I think the best parallel to explain to people why you might not want to is if we were all asked to put "Allah Akbar" on our email footers, on the grounds that it was inclusive to Muslims who wanted to include that phrase.

Trans people might not want to be outed

Tespo · 08/01/2024 22:34

It isn't right for trans people either. it forces them to decide when they may not be sure yet, and forces them to choose between affirming a gender they are not comfortable with, or outing themselves as transgender.

tell them you are thinking of being non binary, but aren't sure. But dont want to use a pronoun you are not comfortable with, but equally aren't ready to use they-pronoun openly for fear of prejudice.

then tell them the truth, that this is just a thought-experiment, and yourself your are a biological gender person. But that you think a colleague that you don't want to name may be struggling. While you disagree with the colleagues views, you think the company shouldn't put them through that.

hoarahloux · 08/01/2024 22:28

If it was in the name of inclusivity then it would include all protected characteristics and email signatures would look like this:

Name
She/her, White British, Non-pregnant, Female, Atheist, 40 year old, Heterosexual, no disability and happily married.

So why is it only when discussing pronouns that people think it's exclusionary to not announce them at every turn?

HipTightOnions · 08/01/2024 22:34

I can't see the problem.

"The problem" is coercing staff members to affirm a belief which they do not share.

It's unethical and unlawful.

KnickerlessParsons · 08/01/2024 22:35

I'd put "my pronouns are he/him" and see if anyone actually uses them about you. 😀

FatFemale · 08/01/2024 22:37

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 08/01/2024 21:42

Tell them thay they're being discriminatory in forcing you to out yourself against your will (you don't have to say what you'd be outing yourself as).

This

so say youve not decided yet…..

mumsytoon · 08/01/2024 22:37

This.

Nousernamesleftatall · 08/01/2024 22:06

They can’t force you. They can’t discipline you. Like the pp I take a dim view of people with pronouns in their signatures.

This. I immediately think idiot when I see someone with this wanky nonsense

I don't think that really works as an argument - the issue with pronouns is that we do need them to refer to each other. We don't need to go around saying "hey, you, pregnant person, 40 year old, etc" So there is a reason why some people might want to use them. (For those with gender neutral names who you meet via email it would actually be very useful). The issue is that if your name is well-known as a woman's name it's purely performative and therefore a political statement of allyship & beliefs which shouldn't be forced on people.

SheFliesLikeABirdInTheSky · 08/01/2024 22:42

Sorry I am a bit clueless/not down with the kids Grin

Does that mean @mrsclaus1984 that if your name is Susan Harris, that they want you to put Susan Harris (she/her.) Or Mrs Susan Harris (she/her?) Or Susan Harris CIS female (she/her?)

I'm so confused. Sad

Redbushteaforme · 08/01/2024 22:45

Inclusive of whom, exactly? Certainly not of women who don't want to emphasise their sex in work correspondence for very good reasons. Nor of trans people who haven't yet decided that they want to identify as such in a work context.

OP, Viewfromahouse above has set out the legal reason to quote to your employers if you want to. Or just don't do it and see if they actually take any action because if they do they are in the wrong legally.
