Pronouns at work

HR has mandated that from now on we are to include our pronouns in our email signatures.

I don’t wish to do this and am being threatened with formal action.

I feel I should add I don’t consider myself to be transphobic/ homophobic/ general LGBTQ+ phobic.. but I have an issue with being forced to do this.

They are also talking about us addressing any new colleages with gender neutral pronouns until we know for definite how they wish to be addressed.

Does anyone know where I might stand from an employment law point of view in terms of the action which may be taken against me? I’d be so grateful for any advice please.

Getting a bit worried now😕

Because as someone mentioned earlier if they are an international student it's hard to identify their possible gender from their name so using they/them is easier. I just continue to use this with all the students. It's not pandering.

Well those poor students are going to be learning shockingly bad grammar from you!
Thanks God I’m not expected to do this at work.

Balloonhearts · 25/02/2025 20:38

Put Goddess. You are too important to be called Her or She and must be referred to only as My Lady or Her Magnificent Royal Goddess, at all times.

SpringCabbage · 25/02/2025 20:30

As above, your HR team are out of date with current case law.

But I think this is such a horrible area for people to navigate. By HR mandating something that’s clearly non-enforceable they make people take a hard-line stance when they are otherwise probably very tolerant people.

Hi folks, I'm confused about the relevance of women wanting to protect themselves and the use of pronouns??? 🤔

Anyhow, whilst I agree your employer cannot force you to comply, it might be worth checking what you've signed up for in your contract! It would however be interesting to know if your employer has pursued against against you; and under what grounds.

At the juncture, I'd suggest hearing them out. Keep the post updated please.

It’s irrelevant what is written in a contract if it’s contrary to UK law, surely?

But at the same time, I work in education and am very mindful of always referring to students as they/them in emails etc,

Why? This is just pandering. It makes no sense grammatically and normalises gender ideology . I’m a teacher and I would not do this. If a pupil has requested certain pronouns (less these days than a few tests ago) I will respect that but avoid using them if I can as I don’t believe in it.

Respond with

"Of course, my pronouns are CEO, CFO, Managing Director, HR Lead, BOSS"

Haha!!

I was in a large face to face meeting today where everyone in the group had to introduce themselves to the whole group. Only me and another gen x'er didn't start off with 'hi I'm <insert name> and my pronouns are <insert preference>. I just said hiya I'm <> and I work in the team. I just didn't think it was relevant. I don't really care if anyone refers to me as he/him. I also don't particularly want to conform to this way of introducing myself either, it's not me being authentic. I also probably accept I am deeply showing my middle aged ignorance or privilege maybe.

The type of information I'd be conveying and explaining is a little more complex than that @FUPAgirl. Not a case of simply forwarding an email.

The last email like that I sent, I used the person's name throughout. Our IT service desk use "the user" instead of name and pronouns, or else use the name.

Thanks

The problem isn't "Dear Danny...." It's when you have to email your team, or whoever and relay "Danny has asked us to do X. He/she needs this done by Friday because he/she has to.... And worse if you don't clock the the name Danny could be a man or a woman so accidentally plump for the wrong pronouns and confuse everyone (who may turn out to know Danny already)

Fionaville · 20/02/2024 22:59

Absolutely no chance I'd do this. I've only been asked once and I told them that I was offended that they'd ask, when I'm so obviously a woman!
Asking someone to out themselves as a woman in an email, feels very discriminatory anyway. Why should our sexes matter in a work environment?

cherish123 · 20/02/2024 22:52

They are not being inclusive towards you and discriminating against you and women as a sex.

Clarence2000 · 29/01/2024 23:38

Understood. However I would say in my experience discrimination occurs on many grounds - whether they be defined in the Equality Act or otherwise.

I fear I'm going off (the original) topic, but whilst ANY discriminatory behaviour needs to be addressed and curtailed, unless employees simply start identifying themselves as numbers or shapes, discrimination will always occur. Even then i'm sure we'd find Evenly numbered employees discriminating against the Odds! And don't get me started on the Oblong Employees... they're all the same!

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 29/01/2024 22:36

Women are often discriminated against at work. Drawing attention to the fact that we are female is likely to increase that discrimination.

Mambo19866 · 29/01/2024 19:30

They will have fun with that at employment tribunal if they fire you I bet you’d get a payout.

I would not like this. My name identifies my gender. I think it should be a personal choice. I have absolutely nothing against people choosing to do this on emails or work badges but I don't agree with anyone being forced to do so.

World's going bonkers.

Droppit · 11/01/2024 18:55

I'm sure there will be others at your work who won't want to do it. I would just not add them and ignore any reminders.
