Government 3day emergency ready

Is anyone else absolutely terrified of this. My mind is working over time thinking of all possibilities of what we may and may not need and where to store all these things. I have a 2yr old too so extra pressure to keep him fed and hydrated. I know they say just incase of a storm or power outage but what if something worse was to happen like how much cash do you actually need to have at home like most people we don’t have ‘spare money’ we live payment to payment so doing that is super difficult and same for stock piling at what point is it enough of everything there’s so much to consider even down to period supplies and toiletries right up to food and water I just can’t cope. How’s everyone else coping and dealing with this oh and medication like to make sure you have enough of everything is crazy it’s such hard work and as I said my minds doing overtime with worry and stress I can’t cope

If "something worse" happens it will be because this bloody government has led us into a war with Russia by supporting Ukraine. We have nothing culturally in common with this country on the fringe or Europe so we should have kept out of this. We have a PM with NO MANDATE for this or anything else at present - elected by a few thousand people in some obscure part of the country. We need a referendum to determine if the BRITISH BORN population as a whole want to support other countries and risk danger to themselves.

Oh bore off with your racist nonsense- you do realise we as a country are incredibly vulnerable and so being a good global citizen with robust alliances is important to our future survival. Plus, it’s the right thing to do and failing to stand up to Russia will just lead to them invading someone else next- have you learned no lessons from history?!

Pugdogmom · Today 12:02

I usually already have these things in place as I live in a town that is notorious for heavy snow ( granted not for a few years lately). The only thing I don't have is bottles of water. We are fine for cooking as have a bottled gas barbecue with a ring, and decided to tidy out my candle cupboard today 😅. Not for any prepping, its a mess.
Think we'll be fine.

AgeingMillennial · Today 12:06

‘Terrified’, really?

Just buy an extra 1 or 2 things each time you food shop.

All you really need is some tins, water, medications, a power bank, toilet roll, and torches/candles.

I take lifesaving medication every day, I have about a week to live without it. I’m not panicking. I’m ordering the odd extra pack to slowly put away, but not panicking.

Applestroodle · Today 12:09

Terrified is such an overused word on MN. It’s become practically meaningless.

For what it’s worth, I not even mildly concerned.

That was my experience during covid. We worked, and finished work to come to empty shelves.
I won't ever forget the feeling- which is why I've aimed to be more self reliant since.
I'm actually still quite angry about it if the truth be told. All those people sat at home having fun times home schooling their children and I was telling my kids we had to be careful only to eat what we really needed.

We used to finish work at 2pm to wonder if there would be bread and milk for the morning. I work in food production. The irony wasnt lost on me.

Ozgirl76 · Today 12:28

We had a period a few years ago where we kept getting power cuts including one that lasted for 4 days (Sydney). We just cooked on the BBQ and made tea on the camp stove, used camp lanterns and candles in the evening. It was quite fun really.
We didn’t have any issues with water which helped.
im also not sure what emergency would shut ALL shops and stop all water - I can’t think of a time ever that this has been the case - shops are way too keen on commerce to shut for long!

72Kit · Today 12:28

It's honestly meant as a 'just in case', like having a first aid kit, not a sign anything specific is coming. For a toddler, the extras on top of the general list are: nappies and wipes, formula or milk that doesn't need the fridge, any medicines like Calpol, snacks they'll actually eat, and a couple of small toys or books for a night with no screens. Do it over a few weeks and then forget about it.

CadiFfan · Today 12:33

Do people not prepare anyway?
I always have supplies, living rurally i have to.

im 3 miles from a local shop, been snowed in for a few days. Im half a mile from the “main road which takes me to the proper big road.

people need to do this regardless of the information given by the government

Yes I wonder how long stored tap water keeps for?

My DH likes to argue water doesn’t go off but it must do.

If you are storing tap water, you're advised to change it every six months. I use mine to water pots in the garden and fill up again. I have three 10 litre cubes of water stored under the stairs.

I’ve seen so many people saying this and it seems like an infantile reaction to me. There is a good chance that there will be power cuts this winter. We know this is likely for a multitude of reasons. Denying it is nonsensical. Making sure you’ve got food for the next three days isn’t “terrifying”, it’s just plain common sense.

I’m sure empty cupboards during a power cut would be far more terrifying than the inconvenience of having to live on cereal bars and cold beans or rice pudding for a few days.

Infantile to freak out every time we're instructed to. And what do you think a paltry 3 days worth of food is going to do for you if there is a world ending situation? You can fast for three days and be just fine. There's no need to get your daily ration of seed oils and biscuits in and pretend like you're some warrior who is going to see yourself through to the end of an apocalypse..lol

What is infantile is being able to imagine nothing other than an end of days scenario. Grow up and read some news and history. Lack of resilience is nothing to be proud of.

Waytoohothot · Today 14:16

Ive lived without heat and landline and no car and infact didnt just live best years of my life, good old days where if you were ill you couldnt ring in sick as had no phone and when the clocks changed you had no friggin idea what the time was and you went to the corner shop and bought what ever ready meal that was vaccum packed in plastic , and it took half an hour to fill a bath as you had no shower and by the time is was filled the water was cold

Maybe I've done other things instead of bought 3 days worth of Aldi food and pretended to be 'prepared'. You grow up and don't address me with anything less than respect if you want a discussion between adults. For someone so 'resilient' you sure are tetchy on an internet forum!

Firstly nobody is instructing us to freak out. You are freaking out, and you’re projecting your anger at the messenger. Most people have responded very calmly and sensibly.

Nor is anybody is predicting the apocalypse, but if supply chains are held up for a few weeks (which is entirely possible) the people with a bit of extra food will be less inconvenienced than the crybabies with their eyes closed and fingers in their ears.

Personally I’ll stock up for a few weeks, to be on the safe side. After seeing the hysterical reaction of some of the public at the advice to stick up for 3 days, you can well understand why the government won’t advise it for any longer. We seem to have become a nation of snowflakes.

charliehungerford · Today 14:40

couchpouch · Today 11:01

I think the 3 days is a red herring tbh but they can’t say more or there will be chaos. Why would we need cash for bad weather if we already have food supplies? Why would you need a copy of your ID? And if the shit does hit the fan hence why you need ID why will that shit be fixed in 3 days?

In extreme weather homes can be destroyed or badly damaged/flooded. Having a waterproof folder with passport and other important documents is sensible. Keep it somewhere safe and grab it in the event of needing to leave the house.

There will be plenty of people like myself who camp. We have a stove and grill that runs on calor gas. Will not be broadcasting this though as Ive read enough dystopian fiction to know looters will be rife and although DS is handy with a Nerf gun, not sure he could protect us.

Undones · Today 14:43

Thread after thread on this.
Why are people acting like we are heading for a zombie apocalypse.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · Today 14:50

Absolutely not.
We always have a few tins of things and dried food. I really don’t know what’s so terrifying.
if my parents were alive they would be laughing. They grew up as children in the war when nobody had anything much.
