Government 3day emergency ready

Is anyone else absolutely terrified of this. My mind is working over time thinking of all possibilities of what we may and may not need and where to store all these things. I have a 2yr old too so extra pressure to keep him fed and hydrated. I know they say just incase of a storm or power outage but what if something worse was to happen like how much cash do you actually need to have at home like most people we don’t have ‘spare money’ we live payment to payment so doing that is super difficult and same for stock piling at what point is it enough of everything there’s so much to consider even down to period supplies and toiletries right up to food and water I just can’t cope. How’s everyone else coping and dealing with this oh and medication like to make sure you have enough of everything is crazy it’s such hard work and as I said my minds doing overtime with worry and stress I can’t cope

Yes I wonder how long stored tap water keeps for?

My DH likes to argue water doesn’t go off but it must do.

If you are storing tap water, you're advised to change it every six months. I use mine to water pots in the garden and fill up again. I have three 10 litre cubes of water stored under the stairs.

CadiFfan · Today 12:33

Do people not prepare anyway?
I always have supplies, living rurally i have to.

im 3 miles from a local shop, been snowed in for a few days. Im half a mile from the “main road which takes me to the proper big road.

people need to do this regardless of the information given by the government

It's honestly meant as a 'just in case', like having a first aid kit, not a sign anything specific is coming. For a toddler, the extras on top of the general list are: nappies and wipes, formula or milk that doesn't need the fridge, any medicines like Calpol, snacks they'll actually eat, and a couple of small toys or books for a night with no screens. Do it over a few weeks and then forget about it.

Ozgirl76 · Today 12:28

We had a period a few years ago where we kept getting power cuts including one that lasted for 4 days (Sydney). We just cooked on the BBQ and made tea on the camp stove, used camp lanterns and candles in the evening. It was quite fun really.
We didn’t have any issues with water which helped.
im also not sure what emergency would shut ALL shops and stop all water - I can’t think of a time ever that this has been the case - shops are way too keen on commerce to shut for long!

That was my experience during covid. We worked, and finished work to come to empty shelves.
I won't ever forget the feeling- which is why I've aimed to be more self reliant since.
I'm actually still quite angry about it if the truth be told. All those people sat at home having fun times home schooling their children and I was telling my kids we had to be careful only to eat what we really needed.

We used to finish work at 2pm to wonder if there would be bread and milk for the morning. I work in food production. The irony wasnt lost on me.

Terrified is such an overused word on MN. It’s become practically meaningless.

For what it’s worth, I not even mildly concerned.

AgeingMillennial · Today 12:06

‘Terrified’, really?

Just buy an extra 1 or 2 things each time you food shop.

All you really need is some tins, water, medications, a power bank, toilet roll, and torches/candles.

I take lifesaving medication every day, I have about a week to live without it. I’m not panicking. I’m ordering the odd extra pack to slowly put away, but not panicking.

Pugdogmom · Today 12:02

I usually already have these things in place as I live in a town that is notorious for heavy snow ( granted not for a few years lately). The only thing I don't have is bottles of water. We are fine for cooking as have a bottled gas barbecue with a ring, and decided to tidy out my candle cupboard today 😅. Not for any prepping, its a mess.
Think we'll be fine.

If "something worse" happens it will be because this bloody government has led us into a war with Russia by supporting Ukraine. We have nothing culturally in common with this country on the fringe or Europe so we should have kept out of this. We have a PM with NO MANDATE for this or anything else at present - elected by a few thousand people in some obscure part of the country. We need a referendum to determine if the BRITISH BORN population as a whole want to support other countries and risk danger to themselves.

Oh bore off with your racist nonsense- you do realise we as a country are incredibly vulnerable and so being a good global citizen with robust alliances is important to our future survival. Plus, it’s the right thing to do and failing to stand up to Russia will just lead to them invading someone else next- have you learned no lessons from history?!

No we didn't in the seventies.

I absolutely had a battery radio in the seventies…

Sugarleaf · Today 11:24

Chillax mate, it’s just 3 days supply. If something much more major happened we’d be fucked anyway so it’s irrelevant. This is just for low-level disruption. Get 30 cans of soup/ beans/ fruit/ veg and some water. It shouldn’t cost more than £50 so do it over a few weeks, when you can.

FirmSnake · Today 11:21

PickAChew · Today 11:18

You cannot store tap water in a bottle for long periods. It's not sterile.

Refresh it periodically then.

FindingMeno · Today 11:18

I guess it's so people don't need to necessarily stock batteries since they're so expensive.
My ancient wind up can also use batteries but actually doesn't need too much winding at all for a decent length of time listening to the radio.
I think I got it 20+ years ago as a free gift from a mail order catalogue, and it's well used and bashed and battered but has stood the test of time.
I have actually now also got one that can be solar powered and charge a phone.
Multiple redundancies/ one is none and two is one, and all that.

PickAChew · Today 11:18

Constantrunner · Today 01:13

You don't have to buy water. If you ever have plastic bottles you can fill them up from the tap and store them. Or any container with a lid.

RaggedRocks · Today 10:33

If there really is an emergency, the shops will be ransacked, so there won't be anything left to buy with your hoarded cash.

Which is EXACTLY why we are being pre warned to stock up now, so that people don’t need to ransack shops.

It seems like everyone is expecting their front doors to be kicked down by thieving marauders on the hunt for tins of soup. That hasn’t happened in Ukraine. Their power is off for hours every day, and food isn’t plentiful but they’ve adapted and are civilised.

EasternStandard · Today 11:12

MagpiePi · Today 09:44

What is the obsession with wind up radios? Are battery operated ones obsolete or unobtainable now?

Edited

Ik we already have a battery one anyway. Not sure why wind up is the factor to go for.

In English please guys

Sorry I was using google translate, Russian is the last language in the world I'd choose to learn after my parents were forced to learn it during the soviet oppression of my country (and my other ancestors during the Russian partition).

couchpouch · Today 11:01

I think the 3 days is a red herring tbh but they can’t say more or there will be chaos. Why would we need cash for bad weather if we already have food supplies? Why would you need a copy of your ID? And if the shit does hit the fan hence why you need ID why will that shit be fixed in 3 days?

Are you a Russian bot?? The Soviet Union attacked Poland on the 17th September 1939, two weeks after the Nazis started WW2. They were on the same side as the Nazis. Russians/Soviets committed horrific crimes in Poland and they were the aggressors. They only joined our side of the conflict after the Nazis attacked them two years later in 1941. Even after this Stalin was always trying to gain as much as possible for his country, not to help the rest of the allies. In the end he bullied Churchill into giving up Poland's freedom so that it becomes a soviet satellite country under the direction of USSR. Poland only became freed from them in 1989. Russians are not our friends

No Russian bot, just not a Russophobe
