That’s it’s.

Not yet. House is only 20 yrs old & well insulated.
It'll click on when it's chilly enough!

PoliteSquid · 19/10/2026 18:21

My hands were cold yesterday and it felt uncomfortable so we hit the switch! Set at 17 which is low, but it’s still coming on so the house is definitely cold. When it’s properly cold it’ll be turned up to 20 - cannot stand a cold house. Also we’re all asthmatic so it’s no good for our health either.

As an aside I’m enjoying this thread just for the competitive coldness 🤣

Yes,it's been bloody freezing.

Today I've got the fire going, the heating on,a fleece jacket on and fluffy socks and I'm still feeling the cold.

Tpday is ridiculous. Same tem and humidity inside as days before and I also can't get warm.

TreacherousPissFlap · 19/10/2026 18:17

Not yet (I don't think) but I live in a new build with very fancy insulation. It's on a thermostat so should just click on but I've not heard it yet.

DDog1 OTOH has been on her luxury heated throw for the past 6 weeks 😆

Stelladid · 19/10/2026 18:17

ours has been on since last week. We live in the North East.

boredandgrand · 19/10/2026 18:15

I really like the cold. I have several of my rooms at different temperatures and like moving though feeling the difference. My lounge is in the centre of the house and is the warmest and my conservatory is the coldest with the kitchen and bedroom being in the middle. I love being under blankets and snuggling up.

Minimum, half hour am and half hour pm.

LightningTree · 19/10/2026 18:04

It’s come on for an hour or so in the mornings recently if the inside temperature is below 18C.

Poisedtartanlurker · 19/10/2026 18:03

I was trying to hold out, but cracked this morning - it felt SO GOOD!

Gettingbysomehow · 19/10/2026 11:22

Its on now. Ancient cat started nest making this morning 😁

MenopauseSucks · 19/10/2026 11:00

Yup! Been using the gas fire in the evening for a while but now the outside night temperatures are below 10c, the thermostat is set at 19c & it comes on in the morning. Not got to the stage when I need it in the evening yet…

FirmSnake · 19/10/2026 10:03

We set the thermostat to auto a couple of weeks ago. Heating has come on a few times. Well insulated house so doesn't take much to warm it up.

Cloudsaandcastles · 19/10/2026 09:57

I learned the hard way when moving and house was left empty that once the cold gets in, it costs a lot to get it out. Same with mould and damp. So it's on when needed. Atm nearly every day for a bit to keep temps steady.
I have no need or want to compete for coldest house

KathleenDarleenDayKnight · 19/10/2026 09:55

Mine's been on since August.

DC are complaining so I've brought out the brushed cotton bedding and hot water bottles. And we've got the heated throws out for working from home. Heating won't go on until we can see our breaths in the room.

That must be utterly miserable.

Definitely a hot water bottle the last couple of nights

Nomorewino · 18/10/2026 20:42

No but I have had the fire lit in the evenings.

But surely that’s just the same as the heating coming on for a couple of hours? And more polluting, too.

Mine has come on a few times, for a couple of hours in total, in the last week. That’s for about half an hour on a few mornings and about half an hour for two or three evenings. It doesn’t seem to me to be more virtuous to light a fire in the evenings then to have the heating on for a short time.

It is currently 9 degrees outside - home counties. We've gone from t-shirts, shorts and flip-flops to thick jumpers, long trousers and furry slippers in less than three weeks. Bit of a shock to the system.

Yes, it’s turned chilly very suddenly. I’m really feeling the cold after all the hot weather we’ve had.

Where do you live that you don't have your heating on yet?
It was frosty here this morning in central Scotland, so yes, we have our heating on.

The south coast

Laurmolonlabe · 18/10/2026 22:25

Ours is on a thermostat, it doesn't come on regularly until mid Nov usually.

steelingmyself · 18/10/2026 22:18

Ours was on low even in the summer. I live north of Scotland though!

Context is everything. South England is going to be totally different to Scotland!

South England - no way. Tested it. Probably needs a service.. but works for now.

windows open all day and night in my room.
hate a hot bedroom. I will probably turn it on after half term to make mornings easier. Otherwise jumpers on !
