That’s it’s.

My hands were cold yesterday and it felt uncomfortable so we hit the switch! Set at 17 which is low, but it’s still coming on so the house is definitely cold. When it’s properly cold it’ll be turned up to 20 - cannot stand a cold house. Also we’re all asthmatic so it’s no good for our health either.

As an aside I’m enjoying this thread just for the competitive coldness 🤣

I’m asthmatic too, I need the air in the house about 19c or my lungs start playing-up. My husband has started feeling the cold since last winter. He’s just coming up 73. Competitive coldness only works for the young, with no lung disease.

WhatMyNameis · 19/10/2026 21:54

Oh actually I lied, it’s off sometimes when I turn it off because it came on but there’s just me in the house all day, so I just turn on my little oil filled radiator in my office rather than heat my entire house.

WhatMyNameis · 19/10/2026 21:51

My heating is never off, just set the thermostat for crying out loud!

IamMaz · 19/10/2026 21:49

Yes - for quite a few weeks.

Twisting · 19/10/2026 21:43

Yep. If it drops below 17 between 5am and 9pm, it comes on. The house is one of those that's often colder out than in. And I'm that weird combination of warm. Up quickly if I'm moving outside, but turn to ice if I sit in the house.

pollymere · 19/10/2026 21:15

Ours comes on automatically if the house drops below a certain temperature in autumn or winter (only between 16:00 and 23:00 though). But it's set very low.

TheDevilWears · 19/10/2026 20:45

Intermittently. I live on an island so one day can be a Baltic gale … or it can be like today ☀️ I have solid fuel heating so it has to be really cold with no chance of extra jumpers before I fire up the range …

Not yet but have put the brushed cotton sheet and pillow cases on the bed and am wearing brushed cotton nighty so nice and toasty just now 😄

Since mid August? Blimey. Where do you live??

Same here. I'm very very far north!

Yeah, for the last 2 months!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 19/10/2026 20:21

I cracked today and put it on for 10 minutes.

biscuiteater · 19/10/2026 20:19

I wasn't going to but the bathroom was constantly dripping wet, cold and going mouldy. The towels never dried as the towel rail is connected to the heating. I switched the heating on low yesterday mainly because of the bathroom as I have a wood burner for downstairs.

catlover123456789 · 19/10/2026 20:11

Yep, just in the lounge and sometimes in the main bedroom. Putting it on when it's sunny to run off the solar so we go into the evening a bit warmer than we need.

SpidersAreShitheads · 19/10/2026 19:49

I'm finding this weather really hard to figure out! One minute it's still too warm and sunny, even for a jumper, and then the next minute it's really chilly! I went out in flip flops last week!

We've had the heating on for an hour or so in the evenings twice now. Once the sun sets for the day, it's getting a bit cold. DD's room is double aspect and we're saving up to get all the windows replaced (they're old and leaky) so she gets especially cold. She also suffers from Raynaud's so she really struggles with her hands if she gets cold.

We haven't lit our log burner downstairs yet though. We don't have central heating downstairs, just the log burner. It makes everything lovely and warm, plus it looks cosy, but it's not cold enough for it yet.

Bubbles90 · 19/10/2026 18:59

Nope not cold enough yet. Probably wont it on until late next month. Not wearing a coat yet either.

Same here. None of us have had coats out yet. Shorts were on at the weekend. Windows are open most of the day.

moggiek · 19/10/2026 19:41

Yes. It’s been off and on for weeks (west of Scotland).

Gertlushthatis · 19/10/2026 19:24

They're not in the house long enough really. Once they're under the covers it's warm with hot water bottles and apart from that they're out at clubs or at school. They only have about 30 mins before bed and 20 mins to get up and out in the morning.

What about weekends? Surely half an hour isn’t long enough to bathe and have tea?

fishingtime · 19/10/2026 19:37

Absolutely. Back to defrosting the car as well. Heating on all day at work.

Our outside temp hasn't dipped to below that yet.

We had our first frost this morning.

What country are you in?

Nottodaybob · 19/10/2026 19:35

I've had it on for an hour in the day and an hour I the evening since Saturday when the temps went from 16 on Thursday to 7 on Saturday. Not got it on a schedule yet as not quite cold enough. I can't be arsed with being cold though.

Loopylambs · 19/10/2026 19:35

Last two evenings just for an hour.

Gertlushthatis · 19/10/2026 19:34

KathleenDarleenDayKnight · 19/10/2026 19:27

How cold is too cold for you? I'd be freezing at 16!

it wasn’t until this thread. My thermostat was on 5 degrees. Turned it to 16 this morning and on it came.
I’ve turned it down as I don’t want to use it until I really need it.
