That’s it’s.

People always seem to get oddly competitive about not using their heating. If shivering at home whilst having a fully functioning heating system switched off was an olympic sport - the gold medalist would almost certainly be a MN user.

When my sitting room is 14C , I decide to put the heating on for an hour or so

Can't you set the thermostat? I believe 18°c is recommended for health.

If you heart the whole house, the surfaces are warmed and there are no cold spots, so you are generally more comfortable. Just set the thermostat to a lower temperature.

Sorry, too late to correct "heart" to "heat".

Not the heating but we’ve lit the multi fuel stove for about a week now and left the doors open it soon warms the house through , my feet were cold in bed tho last night so I’ll dig the fluffy socks out tonight

That's literally heating on.... 🙈

I presume this is a heat or eat choice, no one is cold if they don't have to be.

You would be surprised....

millecent · 20/10/2026 06:45

No, but that’s because we’re tight rather than competitive. We have an oil filled radiator and a small electric heater that we’ll use to warm individual rooms as needed before we put the heating on to heat the whole house. It just costs so much to use the heating!

Yes, it must be. That's awful.

Even with a heated blanket sitting in sub 10 degree temperatures from 5:30pm onwards will be freezing. It’s risking cardiovascular strain and could irritate the lungs. It’s terrible for the house too.

My heating is never off, just set the thermostat for crying out loud!

Yes, that's what we do - very logical!

LochKatrine · 20/10/2026 05:40

Fourhippos · 20/10/2026 00:52

Yes but mainly to dry our vast amount of washing on the radiators. Had a hot water bottle a couple of times too already. I prefer a hot water bottle.

Get a tumble dryer, it's a game changer. The new ones aren't expensive to run, very energy efficient and you never have damp washing about the place.

LochKatrine · 20/10/2026 05:38

Squirrel437 · 19/10/2026 22:14

Absolutely - let the thermostat setting decide, not the date.

Same here. We put it on when we're cold and switch it off when we're warm, that's how we decide. Not the calendar.

ruffler45 · 20/10/2026 05:28

Frost on the cars outside the other morning meant switch on day

It's not sub 10. I'm currently sat in our living room and it's fine.

PorridgeEater · 20/10/2026 00:06

Just one radiator on - all the others have thermostat set to stay off.

BooneyBeautiful · 19/10/2026 22:31

Wanted to put it on for the first time this autumn, but it seems to have broken! My gas engineer is coming round early in the morning. It's not particularly cold though. I have the little window open in my bedroom and the big one partially open. I like lots of fresh air upstairs.

orthrywreeinvicedifthe · 19/10/2026 22:31

Gertlushthatis · 19/10/2026 22:27

Weekends they are out 8-6 on Saturday, lie in on Sunday and then out until 5:30. It's not cold downstairs though, and if it is they'll sit in heated blankets on the sofa.

What about weekends? Surely half an hour isn’t long enough to bathe and have tea?

Obvs you don't live in Scotland🙄. This is so 'South East of England' as an issue. Here in Scotland you are considered fairly hardy if your heating isn't on before end of September🤷🏼‍♀️ If YOUR heating isn't on by then consider yourself feckin lucky.
