That’s it’s.

We cracked at the end of last week and have had it on for an hour each evening to take the chill off, but it won't be used more frequently until mid November. Thank God for heated throws and hot water bottles!

I came on to ask about this but I thought I was being dense! We rarely 'put the heating on'. We have the thermostat set and it kicks in when it drops below that.

What do people actually mean when they say they've put the heating on?

I mean occasionally we do override it but only if it's particularly cold outside and the house isn't warming up quick enough.

Yes I don't get it. I think some people must switch it off altogether and so have to switch it on again. I think my sister probably does because she talks about "putting the heating on". I'll have to ask her. As for me, as someone who's fairly new to central heating, I'm leaving well alone!

On my boiler there are options for the heating and hot water, Off/Timed/Once/On. In summer I use the Off option for the heating. When it gets a bit chilly (like it did last night) I change it to timed so the timer kicks in.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 20/10/2026 13:02

For me, being warm and comfortable is one of the best uses of my money I can think of.

DB and I are both retired, One thing we agreed on was that we're being warm in winter whatever it costs. Thanks to not needing heating for months I have a nice surplus stashed with Eon.

I tend to turn it way down over summer, just in case it drops low enough at night to kick in. So for me turning it on is really just turning it up again.

Can't you set the thermostat? I believe 18°c is recommended for health.

I could set the thermostat, yes.

IclimbedSnowdon · 20/10/2026 12:50

Ours went on yesterday for the first time. Thermostat set at 20°C.

Woojihoon · 20/10/2026 12:35

Floatlikeafeather2 · 20/10/2026 09:25

Ours comes on on its own when it's needed. We don't touch it ever so the decision is not made by us. We set it to what we're comfortable with 4 years ago and it does its thing. So it's been on a couple of mornings lately after cold nights but not later on, so far.

Yes but mainly to dry our vast amount of washing on the radiators. Had a hot water bottle a couple of times too already. I prefer a hot water bottle.

I recommend a dehumidifier. Washing then dries quickly on a clothes maiden.

Sartre · 20/10/2026 12:06

Yes it’s on. It’s set to 20 so as soon as it gets that cold it’s on and it has been for at least a week.

Same here, I value that above other things.

Excessive heating is just like setting fire to five pound notes. Who wouldn't want to avoid that if they had the choice ?

For me there are balance points between switching the heating on fully and having it off.

It has got colder in the last few days so now using the gas fire and heated throw on the bed. Much cheaper than whole house central heating, which I only really use when it gets very cold, mainly in Dec, Jan and Feb to mostly stop the pipes freezing.

TaterTots68 · 20/10/2026 11:22

I've got ours set to come on if it gets below 18°c in the day 12 at night - so it has come on a couple of times. I've had to put the duvet back on the bed (we just have a thin cover when it's warm). I'm not mentally prepared for cold and dark after such a lovely summer and early autumn.

Nobody has mentioned "excessive heating"?

We’ve had an hour or 2 some mornings this last week. That’s been enough to take the edge off and it’s been ok. Trying to resist too much for now, but I live with elderly people 🤷‍♀️

It's not sub 10. I'm currently sat in our living room and it's fine.

It will be sub 10 before you can see your breath though.

I never said that no one has to make that choice. However, I disagreed that everyone who sits in cold is doing it out of necessity.

Ok, fair enough, just that I know, not one person, who is doing so for fun, or because they happen to like being cold.

Cloudsaandcastles · 20/10/2026 10:02

emuloc · 20/10/2026 08:47

Yes you would be surprised at how many people will have to be making that choice, this Winter, It seems to be of little consideration for some MNs on here though, when they keep harping on about competitive heating. Fortunate for them, eh?

ShinyStarMintStar · 20/10/2026 09:48

Yes a few times in late September & early October.

clopertyclop · 20/10/2026 09:28

Everyday….. but I have a woodburner and free wood.
if I didn’t i probably would have had the central heating on for an hour just when it’s really cold.

No heating on here yet. We are on oil so the longer we can hold off now the more we can have it on when it's really really cold.

It's only the last week its turned cooler where we are. If we could afford it we'd have it on now. No strange competition here just trying to be sensible with money.

People always seem to get oddly competitive about not using their heating. If shivering at home whilst having a fully functioning heating system switched off was an olympic sport - the gold medalist would almost certainly be a MN user.

It's every year, I think some people regard it as a badge of honour.
