I don't know. I am in no way a Paul Rand apologist! It all just seems strange to me and I am trying to find any reasonable explanation whatever for it. Because let's face it, hernias hurt and may be life-threatening, so waiting a year to get something done about it when you could afford immediate treatment would be peculiar wherever you decided to go!

This wouldn't explain why Canada (pop. 40 million) has such surgeons but USA (pop. 341 million) does not. If that is indeed the case.

I think if I had a hernia which needed urgent surgery, and I could afford private health care, I might make the effort to look up "hospital" and "hernia" on the internet, and having found the hospital with "hernia" in its name, to ring and ask when they had a slot I could be fitted into for an outpatient operation, which was what Paul went to Canada for according to that article. That would take less than a year, I would expect.

I had no end of hassle when my ma died with the GP putting the wrong date on this certificate- register office wanted me to accept I misunderstood the actual day 👀 as they couldn’t go against the GP cert - the funeral director was melting down as he didn’t want to be known as the guy who picks bodies up day before folk die ha!

Fair enough. And thanks for the information. It must have been giving trouble for a while, if he was knocked over in 2017 and didn't get it operated on until 2019. You'd think if he was going private it could have been sorted out sooner than that, especially since it "requires urgent surgery to correct". In Paul's favour it is said they need treatment by surgeons who specialise in nothing else, which seem to be available in the Canadian hospital with "Hernia" as part of its name, so that explains him going abroad for his op.

So it's the last day of July. Which means Mitch McConnell has less than 4 days left to 'live'.

Or was the hospital in Canada simply cheaper than a US one? (If so, maybe because Canadian private hospitals are competing against a comprehensive state medical system, therefore private hospitals can only operate at a price point which customers feel is good value for money.)

When DB got Uncle Sam to pay for his doctorate, they provided a nice list of US universities. I remember MIT was one. They provided a budget related to whatever he was doing and what they needed at Oak Ridge.

There was a lot of grumbling when he chose Oxford, UK (which to be fair was a world leader in high performance computing). However any discussion disappeared when he pointed out that all together (with housing and medical bills) it was cheaper to study in the UK for three years.
