“Rage Against the Screen”: Mumsnet launches new campaign to help parents tackle scourge of smartphones and social media

68% of Mumsnet users would back a complete ban on social media for under 16s.

Mumsnet, the UK’s largest website for parents, has today (Tuesday) launched Rage Against the Screen, a new campaign designed to inform parents about the dangers of smartphones and social media and empower them to take action to protect their children’s health.

On Tuesday the 21st of January 2025, Mumsnet will host an ‘Ask Me Anything’ session with Health Professionals for Safer Screens, giving parents the chance to speak directly to members of the medical profession about their concerns.

The launch follows research by Mumsnet last year that found:

  • 68% of Mumsnet users would back a complete ban on social media for under 16s.  

  • 62% of parents are concerned about the impact of excess screen time on their child’s mental health.

  • 64% of parents are concerned about the impact of social media on their child’s mental health.

Alongside their work with parents, Mumsnet will continue to campaign for legislation that better protects children from big tech, and are backing Josh MacAlister MP’s Safer Phones Private Member’s Bill.

“It’s clear from the thousands of conversations on Mumsnet that parents are increasingly worried about the addictive effect of social media and smartphones on the still-developing brains of their kids.  Our children are essentially guinea pigs in a giant experiment, and as time goes on there is more and more evidence to suggest that the results aren’t positive.

“As individuals, it' s easy to feel powerless in the face of big tech’s addictive algorithms, and we’d like to see the government do more to protect children in law.   But in the meantime, we want to equip parents with the knowledge they need to support their kids in safely negotiating today’s technology”.
