Château St Pierre de Serjac

The verdict: 9/10

With plenty of activities to satisfy both adults and children, and luxurious accommodation that caters to guests of all ages, the Château St Pierre de Serjac is a great choice for that much-needed family holiday.

Plus, it's situated in one of the most fascinating regions in the South of France. What's not to love?

Location: 10/10

Languedoc

The Château is well-served by airports, by TGV or by car. We flew to Béziers (just a half hour drive away), but you can also reach it easily from Montpelier, Perpignan and Toulouse.

The Languedoc region not only boasts one of the most varied wine regions in the world, but it is also home to beautiful towns and stunning Mediterranean beaches that stretch all the way from the Cote d’Azur to the Spanish border.

It’s definitely useful to hire a car if you’re interested in visiting local areas and amenities whilst you’re there.

Accommodation: 10/10

Chateau St Pierre

There’s a choice of accommodation – you can choose from eight rooms in the luxury hotel or from the 36 self-catering residences surrounding it, which can host up to eight people at a time.

Our two-bedroom apartment was spacious and stylishly decorated throughout – with a well-equipped kitchen (including carafe and wine decanter), flat screen TV and a private terrace with our own hot tub. Some of the bigger residences also include a private pool, all heated from the end of May to the end of September.

The apartment was well-equipped for children – with highchairs and cots provided.

Activities for adults and kids: 10/10

Chateau St Pierre infinity pool

The grounds are beautiful – with the centrepiece being a 30-metre heated outdoor infinity swimming pool. And there’s plenty to do. It’s a working vineyard (run by the Bonfils winemakers) and so wine walks and tastings in their state-of-the-art winery are readily available and very much recommended.

Kerry gave us a tour of the Caveau, explained how the wine was made there and we tasted six very good wines from the Château and surrounding vineyards.

The wine walks are a family affair – not just for the wine tasters – with children encouraged to find almonds and leeks in the wild. They also cultivate truffles on the estate and in-season you can book to join a truffle hunt.

Out of season there’s a truffle walk for you to enjoy and learn the intricate details of growing and hunting truffles. If you fancy something more exertive, there are also bikes available to hire, and a clay tennis court – with all equipment provided.

For children, there's a Kids' Club open to children aged four to 12 with activities including sports and water play. There's also a kids' dinner, regular parties and movie nights.

Services and facilities: 10/10

Chateau St Pierre indoor pool

The spa is a must-visit with an indoor pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, plus a range of excellent treatments available.

There's a tranquil garden with lounger beds available to complete your post-massage Zen experience. The Kids' Club also runs five days a week during school holidays (July and August) – so you can drop the kids there before heading to the spa.

All amenities and facilities are accessible to guests with reduced mobility and, finally, the wifi is fantastic.

Chateau St Pierre restaurant

In the evening, you can make use of the babysitting services available (15€ per hour) and head to the restaurant and bar to sample more of the wine produced on the vineyard and in surrounding areas, and enjoy the locally-sourced French cuisine.

The food is very good, with fresh and varied locally-sourced ingredients, and the restaurant boasts a delightful atmosphere with staff who are exceptionally friendly and helpful.

The bar has a speakeasy vibe and a terrace with a view of the picturesque French countryside.

When to go

We went in October time and were met with some light drizzle, so we would recommend the summer months when you can make the most of the activities and, of course, the Kids' Club.
