Best family hotels in Malaga

It wasn’t that long ago that Malaga was seen as simply a jumping-off point to the golden sands on the Costa del Sol. Things have changed however, and this exciting city is now a holiday hotspot in its own right.

Not only is Malaga one of the oldest cities in Spain but it's one of the oldest in the world. Among the cobbled streets lie ancient Roman ruins, Moorish Citadels and Gothic Cathedrals. It’s also the birthplace of artist Pablo Picasso. Malaga is recognised as one of Spain's cultural hubs and there are dozens of museums, galleries and castles that even the most culture-wary kids will enjoy exploring

Add to this great food, year-round sunshine and churros, (deep fried doughnuts dipped in chocolate sauce) available on nearly every street corner, and Malaga makes a great option for a family holiday.

If you’re wondering where to stay, then we can help. We’ve consulted ever-knowledgeable Mumsnetters on our holidays forum to select the best family hotels in Malaga, whatever your budget.

Best overall hotel

What we like
  • Fantastic location overlooking Malagueta beach, within walking distance of Malaga Park and the city’s main sights

What we don't like
  • There’s very little we don’t like about this hotel

“Miramar is grander and more sprawling, possibly a more typical five star hotel. DDs liked Miramar as it had direct beach access plus a large outdoor pool.”T

Our verdict

Grand by name, grand by nature, the palatial five-star Gran Hotel Miramar Malaga is one of the most luxurious in all of Spain and has a colourful history. In between welcoming famous names including Ernest Hemingway and Elizabeth Taylor, this luxurious retreat functioned as a field hospital during the Spanish Civil War and as the headquarters for the Malaga law courts.

Today it's back doing what it does best, ensuring that guests have a wonderful stay. The service is first-class, the rooms beautifully appointed (with connecting rooms for families), there are two outdoor pools for adults and children, and a kids’ club that opens during July and August.

Nearest beach: Directly opposite Malagueta Beach

Nearest airport: Malaga Airport (8 miles)

2

Best for sightseeing

What we like
  • Central location is ideal for seeing the sights

  • Rooftop swimming pool is not large but perfect for a post-sightseeing dip

  • E-bikes available for hire

What we don't like
  • Better suited to older kids and teens as there are not many family facilities

Our verdict

Located in the heart of the city, the smart and modern NH Malaga is within walking distance of some of Malaga's most famous sights including the Picasso Museum and the cathedral. The Alameda train station is around the corner from the hotel with a direct line to the airport.

A handful of light-filled interconnecting family rooms sleep up to four people. E-bikes are available to rent and covered parking is offered to guests for an additional charge. Best of all, however, is the rooftop outdoor pool (open June to September).

Nearest beach: 15-minute walk to the nearest beach

Nearest airport: Malaga Airport (5 miles)

3

Best for a beach and city break

What we like
  • Beachfront access is fantastic for families

  • Malaga is only 20 minutes away by bus

  • Helpful and friendly staff

What we don't like
  • Some rooms have great views, others don’t. Ask for a room with a view when booking

Our verdict

Combine traditional seaside fun with your city break with a stay at the Sol Guadalmar. Located alongside Guadalmar beach but just a short bus or taxi ride from the heart of Malaga, this family-friendly hotel offers the best of both worlds.

The hotel's Family Rooms come with two queen-size beds and bunk beds for children under 11. Additional touches include complimentary kids' toothbrushes and a surprise gift. Connecting Family Rooms are also available.

There's a large outdoor swimming pool (open May to October) as well as a dedicated kids' pool and a heated indoor pool. During summer months the Mini Club welcomes children aged between 5 and 12 and while the kids are busy, you can practice your serve on the tennis court.

Nearest beach: The property sits alongside Guadalmar beach

Nearest airport: Malaga Airport (2 miles)

4

Best for teens

What we like
  • Delightful rooftop terrace with fantastic city views

  • Fashionable hotel designed by Madrid-based duo Sylvia and Victoria Melián Randolph

  • Thoughtful extras like portable WiFi devices, umbrellas and maps

What we don't like
  • Older teens will love the design and location but the adult vibe means it’s less suited to younger children

“Very cool boutique hotel with a rooftop pool and bar. Right on the seafront in Malaga and in easy reach of all the restaurants/bars, sights.”

Our verdict

A great option if you’re visiting Malaga with teens is the buzzy Room Mate Valeria which occupies a prime position opposite the Muelle Uno marina in the city’s Soho neighbourhood. This is one of the city's coolest barrios, famous for its street art, cafes and galleries.

The 61 individually styled rooms at this designer hotel are decked out in bold turquoise, forest green or bright blue stripes with modern bathrooms, complete with rain showers. There are some interconnecting rooms for families. Breakfast is served until midday in the lower-ground lounge and cool cocktails and tapas can be enjoyed on the roof terrace with views across the city and port.

Nearest beach: Malaga beach (less than a mile away)

Nearest airport: Malaga Airport (7 miles)

5

Best city centre hotel

What we like
  •  Awesome family amenities like bunk beds in family rooms to pushchairs you can borrow

  • Free bikes for exploring the city

  • Wallet-friendly rates

What we don't like
  • There's no on-site restaurant so you will need to dine out for lunch and dinner (the hotel does serve a good breakfast)

  • There is no hotel pool

Our verdict

We love the family rooms at Petit Palace Plaza Malaga. Spacious, light-filled and furnished with bunk beds for kids, this modern four-star hotel is one of the best family hotels in Malaga.

The hotel has cots, highchairs and even pushchairs to borrow as well as family-friendly guides to the city. And teens will love cycling around the streets on one of the hotel bikes.

Located around the corner from the main pedestrian street, Calle Larios, and opposite Málaga Cathedral, you could not be better positioned for making the most of the city.

Nearest beach: Malagueta Beach (1 mile)

Nearest airport: Malaga Airport (8 miles)

Best for a fun stay

What we like
  • Heart-of-the-city location, right next to the train station (a tile covered walkway links the two)

  • Playful design is colourful and fun; we love the large slide in the lobby

  • Parking available

What we don't like
  • If we’re being really picky then we’d love the pool to be a bit larger but it’s perfect for a refreshing dip

“We stayed at the Barcelo hotel, it’s next to the train station and walkable to everything. Nice rooms and roof top pool. Lovely place for an autumn break!”

Our verdict

Minimalists look away now, the stylish four-star Barceló Malaga is riot of colour and futuristic design. The main lobby area, decorated in dusty pinks and deep teals with gold columns and accents is great fun - almost as much fun as the enormous steel slide that whizzes from the first-floor dining space to the lobby area.

There are 221 large and modern rooms, all decorated with panoramic cityscapes above the beds. For families there are interconnecting rooms that sleep up to five people. Set yourself up for sightseeing at the impressive hotel breakfast buffet and when hunger strikes later in the day, order snacks at the ground-floor gastrobar or from the rooftop bar. This is also where you’ll find the small but perfectly formed swimming pool.

Nearest beach: Malaga beach (2 miles)

Nearest airport: Malaga Airport (6 miles)

7

Best for a sense of history

What we like
  • Contrast between the slick, modern lobby and the ancient city walls is unique in the city

  • Location is perfect for exploring the city’s historic centre

  • We love a rooftop pool and this one is up there with the best in the city

What we don't like
  • The hotel welcomes families but the feel is more “adult city break” than “toddlers on tour”. It’s a great option for older kids and teens though

“I stayed once at the Vincci Posada del Patio. [Malaga has] amazing cheap delicious food and everything is in walking distance. And so much to do. Love the city.”

Our verdict

It's not every day that you can say you’ve slept above an ancient city wall but check in to the five-star Vincci Selección Posada del Patio and you’ll have top bragging rights. This luxury hotel sits on the edge of Malaga’s old town, within easy walking distance of the Picasso Museum, the Alcazaba and cathedral.

Positioned within an old posada, the hotel oozes history, particularly in the stylish lobby where glass panels reveal a preserved stretch of ancient city wall crafted over centuries. A staircase provides direct access. The hotel has 106 bright and cheerful rooms, suites and junior suites, most with balconies and a handful that are interconnecting. Another hotel highlight is the rooftop swimming pool.

Nearest beach: Malaga beach (1 mile)

Nearest airport: Malaga Airport (7 miles)

8

Best modern hotel

What we like
  • Welcoming rooms are spacious, bright and most come with private terraces

  • You can easily spend a day at the rooftop pool and bar

  • Faultless service

What we don't like
  • Hard to find fault but if we had to nitpick then the rooftop pool is not particularly suited to novice swimmers

Our verdict

The H10 Croma Malaga is a bold and modern whitewashed block that sits on the edge of the historic centre. It only opened a couple of years ago and is one of the latest offerings from H10, a top Spanish hotel brand.

But where the exterior shares more than a passing resemblance to a giant LEGO block, the interiors are welcoming with traditional tiled floors, colourful artwork and cosy, light-filled communal spaces.

The bright and spacious bedrooms are incredibly comfortable with family rooms sleeping up to four; most have private terraces with city views. If travelling with teens then the Corner2Rooms are connected by a private corridor.

What’s the best part of Malaga to stay in for families?

The historic centre is the most popular neighbourhood to stay in Malaga. Home to the city's main sights and some of its most famous restaurants, it's an easy and convenient place to base yourself.

What are the best things to do with kids in Malaga?

Top of the list has to be the Alcazaba of Malaga. This ancient Moorish fortress was built in the 11th century and is one of the best preserved in Spain. Of the many Roman ruins sprinkled around the city, don't miss the Malaga Roman Theatre that, unbelievably, was only discovered in 1951.

Learn more about the history of Malaga with a wander around the city museum located in the old Custom House and then stretch little legs in the beautiful Parque de Malaga. Sandwiched between the historic centre and port area, the park is home to a good playground.

You can't leave Malaga without visiting the Picasso Museum, located in the house where the artist was born. Older kids and teens will love the OXO Video Game Museum of Malaga that explores the history of video games.

What’s the best family-friendly hotel in Malaga?

All the Malaga family hotels listed above have something special, but we particularly love the Gran Hotel Miramar Malaga for its top-notch kids’ club and beach access.

How we chose our recommendations

Because we know that there’s nothing like a real recommendation, we first headed to the Mumsnet holiday forums to find out what family hotels in Malaga were being recommended.

We then did some research across the wider web, looking at what family hotels in Malaga had won accolades or been featured in ‘best choice’ lists across websites, and what customer reviews said about them. Having collated all that information, we then narrowed our list down to the best family hotels in Malaga now.
