Would you march?

Not some bullshit "pussy hat" march that was about nothing.

Not a vigil taken over by self-publicists who think "woman" is a feeling.

I'm talking about a march through central London with the specific aim of highlighting male violence against women - adult human females - in the UK.

Violence against our bodies, our spaces, our language.

Everyone would be encouraged to attend with a photograph of a woman who has been murdered by a man in the UK in the last 10 years.

Who would be up for it?

I am just burning with anger today

Thelnebriati · 11/05/2021 13:52

I wish I could, but someone would have to march for me as I can no longer travel. I can make banners.

I'm thinking we need to do something different. Not one march, something for every day.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/05/2021 13:58

You already know about Million Women Rise I take it? That is a big annual march against MVAWG that happens around the time of International Women’s Day in March.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/05/2021 14:02

And MWR although not explicitly stated, centres women and girls and there is plenty of female symbolism.

AngelicInnocent · 11/05/2021 14:04

We actually need a donor who is prepared to fund a single issue party which could attract amazing people like Allison, Maya and Ann to stand for election. Raising awareness and making the establishment pay attention.

Something like the UKIP party but for women's rights.

PennineSpring · 11/05/2021 14:06

🙋🏻‍♀️ I would march. I am furious most of the time. Would be great to have an outlet.

Whatwouldscullydo · 11/05/2021 14:09

I have attended a MWR march with dd1.

Although a couple if men did get asked to leave I think there was at least one male in the march holding an "educate and celebrate" rainbow sign.

Would totally be up for female only march!!

Nonmaquillee · 11/05/2021 14:11

Yep
And I would bring my two DDs
Beyond raging after seeing the Dublin video

SmokedDuck · 11/05/2021 14:18

I think lots of people would march, but it might be a good idea to think about timing. Controversy about the safety of gatherings might end up taking the focus away from where you want it.

stumbledin · 11/05/2021 14:50

Yes this made me think about why dont more women support the MWR march.

And also, they usually have really good speakers, particularly giving a platform to women from minority communities, but more often than not the marches drift off to have coffer with friends. It alwasy leaves me feeling really sad. Some of the speeches (and songs) have been brilliant.

I actually think the impact of marches is no longer that meaningful - as a way of demonstrating. It is more about making the marchers feel they are doing something.

Lobbying doesn't work.

I think we only have legal prosecutions left to us, but first of all they are very expensive, and secondly the Government is going to change the basis on which JR can happen (because they dont want to be legally chanllenged which has happened sucessfully). So while all the political show offs are running round screaming about kill the bill (but really wanting to have a go (physically) at the police, the real threat to our political freedom is being snuck in via the back door.

stumbledin · 11/05/2021 14:51

There is mean to be a big march in June once all the restrictions are lifted as part of Reclaim These Streets, ie an actual march. Not sure if it is just London or in other cities.

Thelnebriati · 11/05/2021 15:24

Reclaim These Streets isnt a group I'm interested in supporting, for various reasons.

Pyewackect · 11/05/2021 15:26

No, too busy trying to keep people alive.

ClingFilmAndGafferTape · 11/05/2021 15:32

I'm in, if I can.

FightingtheFoo · 11/05/2021 15:34

@Ereshkigalangcleg

I've actually never heard of MWR I don't think?

I would like one bloody organisation to explicitly state that they support adult human females though.

OP posts:
IdblowJonSnow · 11/05/2021 15:35

I would if it was in the north.

RedDogsBeg · 11/05/2021 15:35

I would. I'm in a storm the barricades mood at the moment though, just fuming, fed up and pissed off.

Thelnebriati · 11/05/2021 15:36

Well Reclaim these Streets explicitly wont do that. Just the opposite, and you can expect any one of their demonstrations to end in an anti carceral attack on the police, followed by a few select and truly astonishingly photogenic arrests.

risefromyourgrave · 11/05/2021 16:22

Yep, I would.

Women's March Mancester - 3 July 2021 17:00

Violence against Women is a global pandemic. We call on all women to march to demonstrate against male violence in all its forms!

Rape, sexual abuse, domestic violence, trafficking, prostitution, sexual harrassment, lesbophobia, porn culture and the objectification and sexualisation of women and girls affect all women. Much of this has been exacerbated during lockdown.

We are marching to remember Sarah Everard and the other 51 women (that we know about) who have been killed so far by men in the UK in 2021.

We march in solidarity with all the women seeking asylum in the UK due to FGM, forced marriage and persecution due to race, sexuality, religious or political belief. We will be collecting donations for a local grassroots women's organisation and leafleting the public about what we’re doing and why.

Wear Green, Purple and White to remember our suffragette foremothers
and/or red as a symbol of our anger and to represent the blood that connects us as women.

Bring your mothers, sisters, daughters, friends, work colleagues.

We plan to end with an after-party to socialise and let off steam! Details released nearer the time.

This march is being organised by Manchester Feminist Network and supported by Make More Noise, Northern Radfem Network and Yes Matters!

FightingtheFoo - Million Women Rise has been going for over 10 years now.

But because they march around IWD time, all the establishment events get publicity but they dont. In some ways think they would be better having it as part of athe 16 Days of Action Against Violence Against Women.

Flaxmeadow · 11/05/2021 16:42

There was a huge march in Manchester around the time of the Me Too movement. A big part of it was raising awareness of gangs in the North of England and the female victims. The media and news branded it 'racist' and 'far right' but it wasn't at all. The speakers were multi ethnic and those marching were just ordinary people and mainstream politics.

UseOfWeapons · 11/05/2021 16:59

I would, if I could get there.
The casual acceptance of violence against women is something inexplicable to me, as someone who’s 2nd husband was a sadistic abusive bastard. He would have killed me if I hadn’t got out.
So many girls and women suffer, and die, every day, all over the world.
If a disease killed as many men as violence against women by men, there would be an outcry.
Yes, yes, yes, I bloody well would march!

Thank you! Good to know, might be worth a summer trip up north for that!
