I have a paper copy of the 2021 British Cycling Handbook. I work and volunteer with/for them. I can't make sense of it. What have they done?

P216
"EQUALITY POLICY
STATEMENT OF INTENT
British Cycling is responsible for ensuring that no job applicant, employee, member or volunteer receives less favourable treament on the grounds of a protected characteristic. Protective (sic) characteristics are disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, sex and age."

P236
"SAFEGUARDING ADULTS: POLICY AND PROCEDURES
KEY PRINCIPLES
All adults, regardless of age, ability or disability, gender, race, religion, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, marital or gender status have the right to be protected from abuse and poor practice and to participate in an enjoyable and safe environment."

P224
"SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE: POLICY AND PROCEDURES
KEY PRINCIPLES
All children, regardless of their Age, Race, Religion or Belief, Disability, Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation, have the right to protection from abuse."

According to this policy BC will NOT protect children on the grounds of their sex.

Have they not followed the scandal of the Football Association?

Who writes this stuff?

There's another BC thread but I'm not sure how to link to it.

www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/transgenderconsultation/

One of my friends who is into cycling in a big way, told me they are running some sort of consultation here so you could maybe give them your thoughts.

megabass · 28/03/2021 18:28

Yes, but it look like they've already written their policy! They are running a consultation, yes.

Well female cyclists should tell them how they feel about it. Surely this will have the end result of male born cyclists winning everything if left as it is? The womens category should be protected imo, the mens open to all.

This policy is a safeguarding FAIL

Please either report this to their massive safeguarding fail to Millie Broadbent, Lead Compliance Officer

Have you seen this, also about British Cycling? They are being investigated by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

We use an online training company for our safeguarding training. They used the same categories as listed on page 236 above. My staff couldn’t understand what sexuality meant. In the end we got the online training company to change their list to match the 2010 equality act protected characteristics. Looks like British Cycling are using the same online training company. They have their equality policy correct but it’s after that they get confused.

They have confused sex, sexuality and gender. It’s either intentional or they don’t understand the difference.

Just read an interesting abstract:

Comparison of training responses and performance adaptations in endurance-trained men and women performing high-intensity interval training

The efficacy of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to elicit physiological and performance adaptations in endurance athletes has been established in men and to a lesser extent in women. This study compared lactate threshold (LT2) and performance adaptations to HIIT between men and women. Nine male and eight female cyclists and triathletes completed trials to determine their LT2 and 40 km cycling performance before, and after 10 HIIT sessions. Each HIIT session consisted of 10 × 90 s at peak power output, separated by 60 s active recovery. Main effects showed that HIIT improved peak power output…Although LT2 power output explained 77% of the performance improvement in women, no variable explained the performance improvement in men, suggesting another mechanism(s) was involved. Although HIIT improved cycling performance in men and women, it might not be appropriate to evaluate the effectiveness of HIIT using the same variables for both sexes.
