A homophobic murderer that explicitly targeted gay men through Grindr. I wonder what part of h** lifestyle lead h** to identify as a woman?

Another case of Prison Onset Gender Dysphoria it would seem...

ErrolTheDragon Wed 11-Sep-19 15:50:20

'Passing sentence, the judge said Matovu, who now identifies as female, was a "highly dangerous predator".
He was jailed for a total of 39 offences relating to 14 victims.'

Interesting... the BBC is referring to this 'self-identified female' as a man, correct pronouns. I guess they're allowing for context (as MN does) rather than 'acceptance without exception' ...Have they done that in the past?

ScrimshawTheSecond Wed 11-Sep-19 15:51:48

Looks like blatant misgendering by the BBC there. Isn't that a hate crime, these days?

DerbyshireGirly Wed 11-Sep-19 15:52:06

Oh of course, I can totally see his "inner woman" just desperate to burst out.

HMArsey Wed 11-Sep-19 16:02:56

Indeed, nothing like a prison sentence to focus one's mind on one's gender identity.

Juells Wed 11-Sep-19 16:13:27

While agreeing that it's shit that person is now identifying as female, I don't know why you're referring to them as a homophobic murderer. The partners in crime were gay, they probably used Grindr because that's what they were used to, and it seemed to be about stealing, not killing. Callous disregard for the safety of their victims, and anyone normal would have stopped after the first death. But neither of them can have been 'normal'.

ErrolTheDragon Wed 11-Sep-19 16:25:33

'Matovu and his partner Dunbar drugged some victims, calculating they would be "too embarrassed to report what happened", said the judge.
'

His associate had targeted gay men to rape and sexually assault.

They certainly explicitly targeted gay men. Whatever the nuance of their motivations, the effect is indistinguishable from homophobic.

You’re right Juells, I’ve confused this with a similar case where a straight man was using Grindr to target gay men. On searching there sadly appear to be a number of similar cases.

BarbaraStrozzi Wed 11-Sep-19 16:33:23

As others have said, interesting that when a gay man murders another man, suddenly he remains "he" on the BBC even when identifying as female (rapid prison onset gender dysphoria, indeed). Yet when men target women, we must respect their pronouns.

Perhaps Layla Moran has been giving the BBC's crime reporters lessons into seeing into people's souls, so they don't make mistakes but can miraculously distinguish true trans from trans-for-the-stay.

hoodathunkit Wed 11-Sep-19 16:40:15

Why oh why does he not simply claim to have DID/MPD like so many others do?

Just as credible / incredible and requires fewer hormones and surgeries.

Fraggling Wed 11-Sep-19 21:38:17

Huh?

Where is the consistency.

If you say you're female you're female.

And that's it, right.

And womens prison is the place to be.

I don't get it. Either they believe in self id and twaw or they don't. This picking and choosing, while women are told to accept everyone at all times and ask no questions, is bang out of order.

Doyoumind Wed 11-Sep-19 21:50:06

Just out of interest, I had a look around to see how this had been reported elsewhere and they all referred to him as a man, mentioning he identifies as female, except PN who conveniently completely failed to mention his current gender identity at all.

TheBullshitGoesOn Wed 11-Sep-19 21:58:46

He's the wrong sort of trans. He mustn't be allowed to sully the image of vulnerable, oppressed transwomen. So they are pretending he isn't one.

But you can't have it both ways BBC. If he says he's a woman then he is.

ScrimshawTheSecond Wed 11-Sep-19 21:59:47

The Guardian have also misgendered the murderer.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/sep/11/stephen-port-drug-dealer-gerald-matovu-jailed-for-of-bond-film-actor

How on earth can they tell who is genuine and who doesn't deserve their pronouns? Is it just post murder one's pronouns are taken off one, even if they're going in a female prison?

donquixotedelamancha Wed 11-Sep-19 22:01:28

On searching there sadly appear to be a number of similar cases.

Tsk. What is the world coming to when you aren't even safe with complete strangers you meet on Grindr?

BarbaraStrozzi Wed 11-Sep-19 22:33:03

I'm so tempted to write a prissy letter to the Guardian asking why they are misgendering this poor, troubled soul brutal murderer.

After all, if they extend the courtesy of "she" to rapist Karen White
www.theguardian.com/society/2018/oct/11/karen-white-how-manipulative-and-controlling-offender-attacked-again-transgender-prison, murderer Claire Darbyshire www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/feb/26/carer-claire-darbyshire-guilty-murder-multiple-sclerosis-father, and rapist Davina Ayrton www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/jan/08/transgender-woman-raped-girl-before-transition-male-prison-davina-ayrton, why not this person?

This person says they're trans, so (Stonewall acceptance without exception) they are trans. Why the pronouns, Graun?

Gingerkittykat Wed 11-Sep-19 22:50:50

Self ID is an excellent move for this man, after 6 months he will be able to legally change his gender, without any input from a gender specialist.

(based on who is proposed in Scottish law)

HandsOffMyRights Wed 11-Sep-19 23:06:36

This is part of a BBC response to a complaint regarding the BBC referring to Karen White as 'she'

* The context and detail of the crimes, the court’s proceedings and findings, and Karen White’s history are clearly set out in the article. And it is a standard of our journalism to refer to a subject by their preferred pronoun. *

* And it is a standard of our journalism to refer to a subject by their preferred pronoun.*

So, BBC does this criminal refer to themselves as s/he/ or a seahorse?

Or is the BBC breaking its own guidelines on misgendering?
I wish Auntie/Uncle would show some consistency. Anyone would think they just make up the rules to suit.

Penis News completely missed the fact this person now identifies as trans. Plus they totally misgender them throughout!

Shouldn't we call the police or something?

nettie434 Thu 12-Sep-19 07:16:30

In the link Scrimshaw sent, The Guardian report the convicted person had:

had a troubled upbringing and had sought help with gender realignment, having identified as female since the age of eight, the court heard.

This makes the misgendering even stranger. Can only think the fact that the victims were men rather than women makes a difference to the use of preferred pronouns.

JellySlice Thu 12-Sep-19 07:36:57

I wonder, did the judge insist that Matovu be described using the female pronoun, as in the case of Tara Wolf?

NotBadConsidering Thu 12-Sep-19 08:30:59

If Pink News can pick and choose which pronouns to use when it suits them, why are we subjected to rules around “misgendering” @MNHQ?

Juells Thu 12-Sep-19 08:38:08

They certainly explicitly targeted gay men. Whatever the nuance of their motivations, the effect is indistinguishable from homophobic.

Because they themselves were gay.
