Am going to this alone but a bit nervous. Anyone know if there is a meet up beforehand?

Betsvigi9 · 28/04/2019 00:35

Just got back from this brilliant meeting with a stellar panel of sheros. We'll worth the long drive. Michelle Moore, Heather Brunskill Evans (WEPs treatment of Heather peak trans me), Helen Watts and Katie Alcock. Particularly interested to hear Katie Alcock's contribution. Katie is an experimental, developmental psychologist whose area of expertise is how children gradually come to understand what sex they are. Studies on this have been carried out since the 1920s and the results are consistent and unchanging.

3 year olds understand the difference between male and female on the basis of stereotypes. Most boys they meet have short hair so if someone has short hair they are a boy and long hair for girls obviously! Show them a doll with short hair and they will say it is a boy. Put a dress on the same doll and they say it is a girl. They don't really understand the difference between appearance and reality until they are 7 or 8 years old. A woman in the audience confided that her 8 year old had asked how you know the sex of a baby because it doesn't have any clothes on. For children with autism it takes even longer to understand the concept of how to understand what sex they are.

Basically, up to the age of 7 or 8 children think that you can change your sex by changing your clothes. They rely completely on stereotypes. 5 out 8 DM5 indicators of gender dysphoria for children in this age group are based upon stereotypes.

Katie Alcock said that she did not believe that psychiatrists and psychologists working in GIDs clinics have any training in developmental psychology. This is really shocking.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/04/2019 09:03

I wasn't able to be there but wanted to say thanks to the women who put a lot of effort into organising this event. Thanks

TheTrickyWitch · 28/04/2019 09:29

Yes fabulous and important event last night. Speakers were all so inspiring. Huge thanks to all the organisers for their hard work.

BeUpStanding · 28/04/2019 09:30

That's such a great line up - Katie Alcock's talk sounds fascinating.

Are there / will there be a video uploaded of the talks?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 28/04/2019 09:33

Betsvigi9 - I studied developmental psychology as part of my degree in the 80s (and for a psy degree in the early 2000s). This was well known back then. Dog with a cat mask and all that.

newtlover · 28/04/2019 12:04

I think the organisers are planning to share some videos of the talks, but I guess it might take a few days....maybe they'll post a link here

LangCleg · 28/04/2019 12:17

Katie Alcock said that she did not believe that psychiatrists and psychologists working in GIDs clinics have any training in developmental psychology. This is really shocking.

It's bloody terrifying.

And it also ties in with the many discussions about the No Outsiders programme and its background in "queering the curriculum" - where child development is completely ignored in favour of everything about childhood being a social construct, in the same way as sex is ignored in favour of gender being a social construct.

Everything we know about child development, child protection and the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults is being undone before our eyes. The results will be catastrophic.

LangCleg · 28/04/2019 12:21

So glad the meeting went well!

Witchothewoods · 28/04/2019 20:22

There's some info here re Katie Alcock's talk last night - she said psychiatrists don't get this training...

There are several tweets after this one explaining further!
