Interesting article. She seems to have been a transexual but they have retropectively transsed her. And what could all this 'trouble' in Manchester Gay Village be referring to.

That's no age, is it? Looks like a nice lady. R.I.P Julia.

Very sad. Condolences to friends and family.

Curious as to why this is posted in feminism though...? Was there a feminism / women's rights aspect Julia's life and activism that isn't mentioned in the article?

charis · 03/01/2019 15:50

Probably because it says she was active in LGBTQ and there's a L in there that modern Ts are not at all happy with. And some fabulous transexuals like Miranda Yardley who are speaking out about this.

I'm not a lesbian but it is very much part of my Feminism.

Thank you. How sad. As I said, she looks very kind and I can imagine her being a great support.

I remember the original documentary series. It sticks in my memory because there was absolutely no joy or celebration in the transition - just an attempt to cope with dysphoria and underlying mental health problems too. The misery was unrelenting as Julia ballooned in weight and suffered dreadful side-effects from drugs. More often than not she looked a mess and it distressed her. It was uncomfortable to watch.

I often wondered whether her life improved when the cameras left but I see that the obituaries describe a lot of health problems including bowel cancer.

Deliriumoftheendless · 03/01/2019 17:46

I saw the documentary back in the 90s. I often think of Julia when I read threads here.

There was also a transwomen (although of course back then she didn’t use that term) and her partner who would be on Jonathan Ross’ ch4 show (the Last Resort?). I forget her name.

Thingybob · 03/01/2019 17:51

I saw this announced on Twitter yesterday and was surprised that it was given so little attention for someone I assume must have been very well known in the trans community. Did Julia have a falling out with that community?

Anyhow RIP Julia.

Processedpea · 03/01/2019 17:56

i saw the documentary and read her book, was a fascinating documentary. rip julia

ikltownofboothlehem · 03/01/2019 17:58

Her book is really interesting and rather brutal reading.

Thingybob · 03/01/2019 17:59

Did Julia have a falling out with that community

I've just seen the other thread and the BBC article so possibly the explanation is around the treatment of children

Tanith · 03/01/2019 18:51

I think Julia was an "old school" transexual.
According to the BBC article, she originally contacted them to complain about a transvestite being described as a transexual. She also didn't believe that children should receive gender reassignment. I can see that both opinions would mean she was in conflict with many of today's TRAs.

This Julia was a very, very difficult person to deal with. A few years ago she featured on 'Four in a Bed'. She ran a place in Benidorm - and her behaviour was odd. She kind of wrecked something in each of the contestant's establishments. A very destructive person. And I think she also had a huge falling out with people in Manchester. She had very vicious relationships with people.

NotTerfNorCis · 03/01/2019 20:55

Julia's brother said 'You could say she was a bit like Marmite, but she probably built more bridges in her community than she burnt.'

Blockyiursekf · 03/01/2019 21:59

I remember watching the series with my mum. After having "bottom surgery" Julia had a haemorrhage and the paramedics treated the problem thinking she was a natal woman, it caused irreparable damage. We felt so sorry for her.

On the plus side she married a very laid back man and they seemed happy together. Their wedding was lovely and emotional.

What a great shame we have the Travis and Jess types ruining life for the genuine transsexuals with body dysmorphia.

MsVanillaRoseAuntof7 · 03/01/2019 22:25

"She seems to have been a transexual but they have retropectively transsed her."

With respect, as you seem like a nice, person, that sentence makes no sense.

"It says she was active in LGBTQ and there's a L in there that modern Ts are not at all happy with."

Another sentence that makes no sense.

Where are y'all getting all this disinformation from?

Njordsgrrrl · 03/01/2019 22:51

Probably not explained well but the first article linked uses gender / sex change interchangeably. Now until a born male has a baby I refuse to believe humans can change sex. I won't even believe it when it does happen. I don't care about souls, about transplants, hormones, feels, a woman is someone who has been a girl. Biology.

But today's new breed insist on taking over all that a woman has, is, and is defined by. I very much hoped this lady, who I am very unhappy to read probably would have lived much more happily in more enlightened times maybe as a gay man, has not been called "transgender" when she was not. L. G. B are sexualities. With so many transwomen insisting they are lesbians, I would argue that the T is not one. And it's lesbians identity under the bus. There have been instances of famous lesbians being retrospectively described as transgender when they were biological woman who just happened to be gay. This ideology is inherently homophobic.

Hope that's clearer and for going easy on me. I've just started posting here and do find it very supportive.

** yes that's a name change because I'm on my spare phone and forgot my log-in

"Y'all" makes no sense either.

MsVanillaRose, you're back, I've missed your delightfully incisive posts not
