Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Mermaids and a well known uniformed organisation that isn’t the girls only one

I’ve been keeping my head down because I don’t want to end up like Agnes from the Guides, kicked out of an organisation I’ve been part of my whole adult life on a trumped up charge. For this reason I have been very careful not to use the groups name please respect that in your comments.Thank you

I can’t keep quite anymore after hearing the mermaids training recording!

The association sends it’s leaders a magazine several times year. It has badge ideas, stories, upcoming events etc etc.
The last one had a big spread on diversity and inclusion and it was a good spread - apart from when it pointed leaders towards Mermaids and Stonewall for further advice and guidance.

I asked for this advise to be rethought and have yet to have a response.
I hope I’m not the only one but I think many leaders will see it as a non issue and not even think about it. The association is already a tolerant place and I can see gender nonconforming children being happy in the movement. I’m not sure many leaders will have the cause to contact either organisation but they may visit the websites for more info.

Please if you know any leaders in the movement who are GC can you ask them if they saw the article and if they would investigate for themselves whether Mermaids aims fit with our goals as a movement. If they like me have issues then please ask them to be brave and raise them.

Who the hell is pushing this in the guides?
Every mention like that gives mermaids an air of respectability they do not deserve at all.

It's shameful

Not that one anyway from what OP said. Sad to hear it's not just them though.

The thing is about that Daily Fail article is that while it is ok to raise safety concerns over in appropriate clothing for an adventurous activity, it is not ok to make it personal with remarks about a person's religion or Darth Vader.

And yes, the same organisation does have policies shaped by Mermaids and Stonewall.
They are there on their website and include advise about leaders making allowances for girls wearing binders, all inclusive sleeping arrangements and so on just like the Guides.

That article re the ‘leader’ being thrown out is missing my point.
No leader should be speaking to another in derogatory terms. There was no mutual respect.

The Association is inclusive, mixed sleeping has always been a thing but the difference is everyone has to be aware and happy with the arrangements.

My issue isn’t with how the organisation

A Leader within this organisation has said to me that the day he is asked to support a girl in wearing a binder is the day that he will lose his Warrant, as he cannot and will not support child abuse or physical abuse.

Have you pointed out that the Lottery is reviewing Mermaids? Perhaps when the review is completed it will help many other organisations consider their links with Mermaids

thefleurdelis · 22/12/2018 18:05

Leaders need to make the organisation aware that Mermaids should not be referred too
