For anyone interested there is a debate about the new legislation and gender this Wednesday evening in South London

Miranda Yardley and the Julia Long are speakers. I will definitely be attending so hope to see a few of you there.

Ah I did want to go to this but I have a work thing. I might try and make the second half if I can get away in time.

I'm going. I think I'll take DS.

Sadly, I'm way too far away to attend - but would love to hear about it afterwards from anyone who goes.

DJBaggySmalls · 12/09/2017 10:27

Any chance it could be live streamed?

Report
vaginafetishist · 12/09/2017 10:27

I will be there too!

I'd really love to be there but live too far away.

Would someone who is going perhaps be able to live-tweet it?

I learn it has been cancelled.

Miranda Yardley says it's going ahead

Goldsmiths LBGTQ+ Society were planning a protest at the venue:

After being on the receiving end of threatening calls & emails all day, New Cross Learning have cancelled the event on health and safety grounds:

Is it being moved to a new venue?

Report
JynOdan · 12/09/2017 23:34

Yes, I believe it's still going ahead. If you go to the library, they'll let you know where to go

JynOdan

Can you give me a reference to that? What library?

Report
ellaoldie · 12/09/2017 23:37

What library? I was planning to go.

Have just seen this. I want to go! What was New Cross Library is now called New Cross Learning; I think the library as run by Lewisham Borough was closed but is now volunteer-led. It is in the main New Cross Rd, nr Iceland. I will try and go if DH can have the children. (That makes me sound soooo feminist Wink)

MacaroonMama

So do you have to go there to find out where the talk is being held?

Report
TimbuktuTimbuktu · 13/09/2017 00:02

Hmm it would be helpful if someone could share over pm etc when they know. I am unlikely to be there on time.

JynOdan · 13/09/2017 00:05

The original venue, New Cross Library. There will be someone there to direct people to the new venue.

Hi Datun I am not sure - have just looked at the links BetsyM00 posted above - there is a lot of very nasty debate on there. A lot of trying to shut down women's voices. I may call the library tomorrow am and ask? If I do, I will PM you. But actually if the fb chat was anything to go by, I think it will be horrible and bitter with no room for debate. I also am not sure where else it could be held. Can't imagine Goldsmiths would host it now.

The library pulled out the last minute (ie. tonight) because of the trans activist harassment. The organisers are working very hard to find a new venue and will post here if there's one secured.

Aha, thank you JynOdan. I am still not sure if I will go now - I actually feel it might not be very pleasant and/or safe. Is that cowardly?

MacaroonMama · 13/09/2017 00:09

Why can we not even talk about it???!!! It is 1984 crossed with The Handmaid's Tale. Bloody hell.

If anyone does go, should we wear a Mumsnet badge or something? I am def too scared to go alone! Maybe a 'pussy hat'? Or just a red rose in the buttonhole...

I've got the number off that notice and will give them a call tomorrow.

I do hope it won't be a waste of time with transactivists yelling transwomen are women, making idiots of themselves and ruining it for everyone else.

For fuck's sake it's a venue in South East London. It's not Carnegie Hall. Every single time they shut a debate down with threats of violence, they are simply shooting themselves in the foot. Counter-productive idiocy.

Report
JynOdan · 13/09/2017 00:30

MacaroonMama, no, it's not cowardly at all, male violence is scary.

But funnily enough, I wasn't going to go as we had theatre tickets, but now I am going and so is my mum. I will not let bullies silence me and I want to show my support.

2 of the speakers were from Stonewall; one was "Stonewall's head of trans inclusion Bex Stinson" who is a trans woman.

From press articles Bex Stinson sounds like a complete , right-on pain but seems perfectly capable of holding her own ground.
