How much is it to get a dog pts

This is very difficult to do so please be gentle with me, this dog is not my dog, i can't say too much more about it but he is a rare giant breed dog well known for aggression, bred to protect farms, has been kept in a small pen type enclose for 80% of his life. He is 3 years old now.

The owners do not care about him in the slightest, they won't pay for vet care but also will not rehome or try to find a rescue, ive looked into this myself and do understand that it would be extremely difficult to do this with him anyway, he should of been socialised as a puppy, instead he was locked away and occasionally got out to make the owner look good. He is not trained in any way. I've never seen him act aggressively in fact he only ever looks happy when there's company around but due to his breed and the way he's been raised i've been told by a vet not to trust him at all, i have a one year old so taking this dog in is not possible.

I have recently taken him to the vets and paid for this myself because he was not eating, for the vet to tell me that he's depressed and that these breeds are extremely stubborn with training as a puppy, pretty much impossible as an adult, and that the advice would be to put him to sleep. I just want to be able to help and if the best that i can do is to put him out of this miserable existence he's in then so be it. The owners do not care as long as they don't have to pay.

He's 140lb, how much would this be?

What a sad situation :( I think I can guess the breed and there's been a sharp rise in them being handed into rescue. Such a shame.

There is no set price for dogs to be put to sleep, the vet should be able to advise.

It's horrific i just can't understand how people can be so cruel, they have paid over 2k for this top of the range pedigree to treat him like shit :(

Is it an Anatolian Shepherd/kangal?

If so, Karas rescue are really really good, I would imagine they would take him.
The woman who runs it, I can’t remember her name but she is a dog trainer, her company is called Hairy Poppins

Don't know where you are but Furry Friends in Coulsdon Surrey have a great reputation on training the untraining. They are a for life rescue so dog would be safe

Livestock guardians (assuming that’s what you mean by farm guard) are rather specialist breeds, a general purpose rescue is no place for an ill socialised one with issues.

Karas is the breed specific rescue for Anatolian/kangals

If it’s a Caucasian Ovcharka then German Shepherd Rescue UK runs the breed specific Ovcharka rescue aswell

The only Boerboel rescue I could find don’t seem very good, they state they don’t access dogs for rehoming, which is rather terrifying!

The Cane corso rescue appears to take them though.

I wouldn't write him off to be pts, yes he's a big boy but the spiel about the breed states they are highly intelligent and obedient. So even though he's unsocialised and trained doesn't mean he's unbideable or would become aggressive. How was he with you when you took him to the vets? Our dogue de bordeux cost £125 to pts when the time came (also a big boy).

The owners have agreed if i pay for it, the vet told me it would be best for the dog to be pts, i didn't take any notice of the vet and thought he'd be okay if he was getting exercise and things like that, ive attempted walking him before and ended up flat on my face as he weighs more than me.

They had a walker for him a few years ago and i rang them up earlier to ask if they'd walk him again and as soon as i said his name it was a firm no, they told me that any other walker that says they could cope with him would be lying and also told me to report him to the council as an aggressive dog and get him destroyed, they were so rude i broke down on the phone as i've been trying everything i can to get him a better quality of life but feel like no one else has any faith in him, he's a lovely dog i'm so angry that the owners basically screwed him for life by not socialising him early it's so unfair. I will try anything i can to save him, i'll give all these recommendations a call tomorrow thank you so much everyone

When i google the breed i find that some websites sing the breeds praises and say that they're a good family pet but then there's also news reports mixed in about two people that have been killed by them in recent years and a 10 year old girl who got badly attacked and needed skin grafts, it makes me lose hope because surely anyone that reads that would just write the breed off

Why has the vet suggested pts? Is he unwell? You say he isnt aggressive? Vets dont suggest pts for no reason so im assuming there is one.

I was going to try and keep him in my kitchen with the back door open as he's used to being outside and doubt anyone would try to come in with him there, but the vet said not to even try it's not worth the risk of anything going wrong and he's so used to having no contact with anyone that he could become defensive / aggressive

The reason is that his quality of life is so poor right now and she said that rehoming is extremely unlikely and the likelihood is he would be pts anyway

Have only ever met one boerbel and he was like a 70kg teddybear. However i can see how an aggressive one would be terrifying. He had what i call a mastiff personality which is actually pretty chilled out. The owner did tell me he is a natural guard dog though.

This is really sad. Just looked online and they look very big powerful dogs.

But I really can't believe that someone, somewhere, a dog trainer or behaviouralist, could not train him and enable him to be rehomed with someone suitable and knowledgable.

You are in extremely dodgy ground to get someone else’s pet PTS.
If they aren’t getting vet care and it isn’t eating and is slowly starving to death then report on animal welfare grounds.

She said the issue with rehoming him is that he would need to be with someone who is strong and fit and a big breed training specialist but that has no other dogs and dog experts tend to have other dogs so that's the reason it's unlikely anyone would take him

I wouldn't rehome via the dogs trust in these circumstances. That said they probably wouldn't take him on but i do agree OP that if a suitable home cannot be found pts is really the better option.

I can't imagine for one second this dog was cheap, they are not a common breed in the uk so why wont your neighbours pay?

You sound lovely by the way. If you have children do not consider taking this dog on. Simply his size and life makes him dangerous. I can't comment on the breed though.
