Anyone else watch this?

Presenter Katherine Ryan was UNBELIEVABLY irritating.

Never enjoyed Katherine Ryan as she is very annoying. Found the judges a bit meh.

She wasn't great. The judges have no warmth - particularly Solange. I felt sorry for that poor bloke that made a joke. That fell flat.
Some of the pieces were lovely, though.

Watching now on catch up, really don't like Katherine Ryan find her a bit ascerbic. Poor guy making the joke about 8 inches got shot down in flames agreed!

Solange is a bit scary but I liked her icy "It's a loup" when Katherine said something witless about a monocle. I think she finds KR as irritating as we do.

I loved the jewellry, but felt that there was not enough of the process of making the items.
The presenters are all a bit wooden, but i think they will warm up. The male judge is so po faced though

Hmm - there was very little of what they were having to do being shown. Those tasks were pretty tough in the time.

Report
steppemum · 13/04/2021 21:51

It also seemed off time wise, so still sawing/soldering with 10 minutes ot go, but they still have to polish, which must take a while.
I find it hard to believe that you could make those pendants with that finish in 4 hours

I really wanted to like this but it felt very cold and soulless. The designers seemed very sweet but the judges were completely miserable.

I enjoyed it but agree there was little warmth. KR actually annoyed me less than she usually does, but with those judges the presenter needed to be someone really lovely and warm with the contestants. I did like the male judge, he was kind and encouraging at least, but he was a bit dry!

I'd rather they gave them longer for the tasks, which would be more realistic for the skills and processes, and show more of what they were actually doing. I think the problem is that something so skillful which takes a lot of time and patience doesn't really lend itself to this format.

yes and totally out of place.
Why wasn't it edited out!

Utter crap. Which was such a shame as as a jewellery designer I was looking forward to it. The actual contestants seemed good but the judges were obviously not vetted on personality and the most annoying host known to man was not a good choice.
Anyone else pick up on the cringeworthy straight, white man comment? Yuck whole thing was just cringe. Such a shame for the contestants.

The contestants all came much better than the judges and host! I thought the male judge was ok but I really cringed at Solange’s reaction to the Welsh contestant’s joke. A couple of Katherine Ryan’s comments were really awkward too. Having said that, I could look at jewellery all day so I’ll be watching next week!

I watched it - I was quite excited - but I thought it was AWFUL!

Didn't like the presenter, judges were humourless tw*ts completely devoid of personality (especially that women - what a po-faced baggage she is!), participants don't "move" me .

However I will probably give it at least one more week just to see if everyone starts to relax into their roles. First episodes of anything are often a bit stilted. Doesn't have HALF the gripping power of Sewing Bee or Throwdown or Bake Off, though - there's just a lack of something special, but I couldn't tell you what.

I thought that was awful. It embarrassed me, and I wasn't even there.

The paternity test comment was awful and I don't get why it wasn't edited out.

I'll also give it another week but I'm really disappointed at how awful it was. Which is a shame as the artists are talented. It just never seemed to show much progression, so there's a lot of cutting out and suddenly it's finished. It was odd.

I think KR was working very had to add some fun into it as the judges - Solange particularly- were really miserable and serious. Unfortunately it came over wrong and was too uncouth. More rude than cheeky like Bake Off etc. Wrong choice for presenter.

That was so random. And offputting.

Id have liked to see more of the techniques, I'm not at all crafty or handy but would enjoy seeing the process.

The first challenge seemed very hard for the first challenge, three in the time and an exact size seemed a lot when getting used to the studio, equipment and cameras etc.

I think I'm over comedians presenting these competition shows and would like jolly presenters to return.

The "straight white male" slur was a shock even though it is fashionable at the moment to denigrate them.

It was strange that at the same time as being a slur, it was also a compliment because she suggested that the contestant behaved like a straight white man to increase her self confidence in the piece she was creating.

Personally, can't wait for this negative phrase to become socially unacceptable in time, particularly those who have dads, brothers or even sons who it can apply to.

With these programmes, the times are always too short. I guess it increases stress and makes it more likely for mistakes to be made = more entertaining?

Has anyone watched Pottery Throwdown, because their presenters are awesome. This is how it can be done.

Also, if you have Netflix, check out Blown Away, a glass blowing competition. It is amazing.

Talking about Sewing Bee, new series starts tonight at 9pm on BBC1!

I will watch the whole jewellery series, its only a short set, six weeks I think. I agree there is a lack of...something. I watched the dog grooming competition that was on recently and felt it was somewhat jarring too. Couldn't put my finger on it. I wonder if they'll ever do another one?

I love Pottery Throw-in March - it's really engrossing.

I watched the first series of Blown Away, but I wasn't so keen. The atmosphere was "spiteful competitive". not 'friendly competitive" like we see on Throwdown, or Sewing Bee, or Bake Off. It may have mellowed in later series, but I wasn't smitten.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/04/2021 08:04

Liked the proper grooming bits of the dog one March, but not the "spray them fancy colours and cover them with sequins" part - I'm sure it involved a load of skill etc, but I don't like animals mucked about like that.

REALLY looking forward to tonight's Sewing Bee. (Hooray!}
