Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

NEW since the last thread:

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

OCTOBER 2017: It's our snailaversary Cake! Our baby ripe toddler skins are about a year old now, or rather getting together on these threads about a year ago. I can't believe we're all still finding things to chat on about between the hair disasters. I know I always encourage a bit of catching up at the beginning of the new thread with how everyone's skin been progressing over the last couple of weeks/months but now I'm demanding more Blush and would really like to hear how everyone is doing a year on now, or however long you've been with us. Basically, pledge your undying love for these threads Grin

NB: I've removed the form from the OP as I felt there really wasn't a need for it anymore. I think I've also answered enough of those forms in their previous incarnation for a lifetime so it may just be a selfish decision but it's been made Halo

Nothing to report here, chin spots ahoy Angry
It's always on the right hand side of my chin too, so strange

Well, I do pledge my undying love to this thread. Thanks to everyone for their input, advice, sending me things through the post, general musings and for care and concern at a difficult personal time. I've been here for nearly the whole year I think. BHA, retinoid, Vit C- these are all part of my routine thanks to this thread and I feel fairly fluent in all the skincare language Halo

Yay. Happy birthday to us! Thanks for starting new thread Bo.

I have toned my skincare down a bit these last few weeks. I think that was brought on by my new Vit C being a bit strong. I've been lazy with masks for months but might dig those out. Other than that, not a lot to report!

Oh and I bought some eye makeup remover from Tesco, appears to be their own aloe range. £2, reviews of other products here https://www.sallyakins.com/tesco-beauty-spring-2017/

Anyway I'm fussy. It can't be oily, I hate two phase ones, and everything stings my eyes. Except for olay one which is discontinued Angry and boots sensitive own brand. I prefer lotions. The Tesco one is like a gel, it's strange Grin no stinging, no oil. Would 100% repurchase

But have you had a haircut Enid?

Blush er...no. But I have discovered that a little spritz Bumble and Bumble airspun spray makes my ridiculously long fringe look like it's there on purpose and part of my main hair. (Just have to be careful I don't get a big 90's surf wave fringe. Grin)

Is Dr Bronners the liquid Castile soap?

Does anyone wear contacts? DH had just got some. What unscented soap do you wash your hands in before you put them in?

I will do a snailaversary toast tomorrow. 🐌🍸

Forgot 90's surf wave fringe pic... (this is what to avoid people. I know the 99's are back but...no.)

I bought the Chantecaille! I got shade Bliss. My LM is Blush. The Chantecaille is Bliss. They look quite different on screen, but on my hand they look very similar. She tried three different ones and Bliss was the stand out match. She then put it all over my face and I kept it on all day. I really liked it. I have been finding the LM makes me feel a little too glowy, but I'm not sure if that's been made worse because I've been over doing it on the actives.

So it's just JDSTER who loves me these threads Sad I'll get round to my own version at some point, honest.

Enid, I don't wear contacts but currently do have a Dettol liquid soap as it was on offer which is sort of the OG unscented liquid soap. I have a scented version now but remember using the unscented one exclusively when looking after my mother and it only dried out your hands if you washed excessively often (like nurses and similar do), otherwise it's fine and inoffensive.

Pupsie, I know what you mean about getting too glowy with the LM TM when you're plenty radiant yourself from the actives (there is such a thing as glycolic face). I've tried the oil free version from LM as it's a bit matter but I really didn't like the formula for my skin and it oxidised like mad. Thanks for the shade feedback, Blush used to be my winter colour when I had a bit more pink in me but these days it's too rosy. I should really have a look at the Nars TM at some point as that's supposed to be a bit more matte and has a good shade range.

I've just added some of that aloe eye makeup remover gel that oli linked to to my Tesco delivery tomorrow. Looks like it's a Spanish make and not Tesco's own brand. I also don't like oily/bi phase removers

Ollivander84 · 13/10/2017 14:35

Hope you get on with it Smile it's quite a runny gel, unlike any eye makeup remover I've ever used!

Ooh I would love to try the Chantecaille TM, have been avoiding due to €€€ but sure, everything is worth trying, right???

bo I love this thread, it is my go-to for all things skincare :) and I love the sense of community here.

My issue of the month is...dehydration and tightness. I am finding that around my eyes and upper cheeks are really dry during the day. If I smile you can see ALL the lines (plus some I don't think are even there). If I do a big yawn-type stretch my skin feels very tight.

The only changes I have really made recently are the addition in the AM of TO Vitamin C 30% and Resveratrol (2/3 drops) and then Verso eye serum 2/3 times a week in the PM.
I have been upping the hydration in the AM in attempt to remedy this tight feeling, using a heavier cream, but it is not really helping.

I have a feeling it may be the Vitamin C, and the silicone it contains. So if I stop using it I will be without a Vitamin C option for the moment. I am half tempted to go back to LRP Redermic C20 ; while it is not very strong, it definitely suits my skin. I am also tempted to get the Drunk Elephant next month when DH is in the US. Any feedback on it? Or any other more hydrating C version? I could try the oily version from TO I guess?

Happy Birthday to the best thread ever ! Thank you bo for starting another lovely new one 💐.
I still have shitty skin and have noticed just how linked my mood and the condition of my face are...good skin day = happy sunny me, bad skin day and I become a horrible person !
The initial passion for all things TO has definitely waned, I’m still using the 30% Vit C and Resveratrol, but whilst it hasn’t caused any problems I cannot see noticeable results either so will be looking into alternatives. I love my PC 2%BHA so will definitely be repurchasing. I’m also happy with my TO moisturiser so will also continue with that.
I’m still obsessing over my closed comedones and their refusal to just do one ! Angry

I pledge undying love for the thread too 💕 I’ve only been participating for about 6 months but had been reading for a while before that learnt a lot before I started joining in.

Main things were: Importance of using dedicated spf (not just relying on the ones in makeup) & double cleansing.
Also not to go buying dozens of products without a clue how, why or when I’m going to use them though that is still a bit of a work in progress Grin
My skin has definitely improved as I get significantly fewer spots or whiteheads now, as a fairly heavy makeup wearer I think just the double cleansing led to a huge improvement there.
I’ve also been delighted to discover not just one but two SPF50s that don’t make me greasy or give me spots (biore brightening in the little pink bottle and my beloved bioderma nude) both recommended here.
And I’ve xome to the shocking conclusion (from other’s posts and my own experience) that TO stuff may be cheap but isn’t that great Shock

Miffy I’m not having a good experience with the TO Vit c 30% and resveratrol combo either, it makes my face feel tight and itchy. I was blaming the ret 1% but ditched that and was still itchy, skipped the Vit c/resveratrol a couple of mornings and no itching! So I’m also looking for non TO Vit c, I might go back to the more oily 23% one from them, but wouldn’t mind trying something different as like I said above I’m losing my TO love.

miffy have you tried a HA serum? I've just reintroduced HA (I use NIOD). I used it last autumn/winter and it stops me getting a bit flaky (bearing in mind my skin is fairly oily). The 23% TO Vit C has HA in it although I'm not sure how effective it is in that particular combination.
user I'm still using Biore brightening SPF. I think that come summer time I should use something a bit more derm recommended like neostrata or Elta MD. I worry slightly that Japanese SPF say for indoor use.
My skin is definitely better for the recent reintroduction of BHA

Definitely curious how everyone else using TO 30% have been as mine lasted about three days.

Mint, no balm counters near me and I'm far too fussy with colour matching to buy from online swatches alone. The INCI would also be a bad match for me due to the presence of Isopropyl Myristate which is very clogging for some (bit like MO and silicones). It also has a few shitty and unstable UV filters that would merely annoy me for being there uselessly Grin

I think the talk around DE Vit C has been mostly good. Let me put it this way, if I was heading over to the US or could have someone else pick me up some easily I would but currently ordering through Sephora with all the shipping and import taxes it comes out more expensive than SkinCeuticals when it's supposed to be a cheaper alternative. Still absolutely loving the SC Vit C and am contemplating trying the AOX eye gel as a result.

I think the Skin Deva Vit C is still potentially interesting and I think I saw something new somewhere the other day but I need to look it up. Also saw that Kiehl's now have a 1,5% BHA product in their dermatologist line (more expensive line but the one I've always been impressed with in terms of active ingredients and efficacy) and also a spot treatment with sulfur. I need to do a bit of investigation on those two.

I forgot to mention my new favourite SPF, NeoStrata Sheer Physical Protection. I absolutely love it as it’s non greasy with a very light tint. It just seems perfect for my complicated skin Grin.

Bo isopropyl myristate is usually a trigger for me too but touch wood this has been ok so far and I'm on my second tube. It's in Debenhams if you have one of those near you? If however you find something you love please share with me as I've been searching for the perfect tm for years! Not too sheer like most are, creamy thick texture that melts into skin leaving no shine or chalkiness, and a nice coverage. Is that too much to want Grin

Yes, HA is a permanent part of my skincare lineup. I even broke out a new bottle of Pestle & Mortar, my HG, this morning and the tightness is still there :(
So for now I will ditch the Resveratrol/TO 30% combo and see after a week if there is improvement. Otherwise I don't know what it could be. I am heading to Spain for a wedding this day next week and I want to look my best :D

In my Sephora basket I have a DE kit which contains the full size Vitamin C serum plus 3 or 4 decent sample sizes of other items from the DE range, for an extra $8. Now I just need to know what hotel DH will be staying in and I will send it there!

I'm back...(again)...yes, happy snailaversary to us!!!!
Generally speaking, a year on and my skin has never looked better..really....though for the last few weeks it has gone slightly haywire due to moving house....calming down a bit now again.
I've got updates for empties trials etc but as we're almost half way through the month already I don't know if it's worth a mention.
olli yikes from last thread about the gateway...bleddy horses, they so often seem to forget frail humans take up an entirely different body-shape/space to them. I frequently point it out to mine, to no avail...

I pledge allegiance to the thread Smile I joined late, and definitely a lurker rather than a poster, but I've learnt a lot and really glad to be here.

After avoiding niacinamide for a few months I thought I'd test it again to see if I'm still sensitive to it. Er.. well yes I definitely am. Face was prickly, sore and red straight afterwards, and now 2 days later I have a face full of spots! Won't be trying it again! It's the only sensitivity that I have (that I know about) so hopefully it'll be easy for me to avoid.

I really love Cosrx Snail 92 cream. But I HATE the jar packaging. The cream is goopy and stretchy, my jar is now sticky and gross. It really needs to be in a tube or a pump. I'm thinking of buying an empty tube/bottle and filling it. Anyone tried this? Any drawbacks that I haven't thought of? I also want to try the Benton Snail Bee Steamcream which has different packaging, but I've got half a jar left and I'm losing the will to live with it.
