And Dd is bloody ill again!!! She was ill in last year's 😢

Poor girl . Is she badly ill? What's wrong and do you think she'll be ill for all of them?

Ds' prelims were before Christmas. He wasn't feeling 100% for one of them (Physics? Maths?) but was ok about that because he's confident enough about his ability and revision for the actual Higher.

He got an A for his Physics (despite losing about 20% on one question ) but is still waiting on his Maths result (was supposed to get it today but his teacher hasn't been able to get it cross-marked as they are a teacher down).

Last year when my DS was sitting his higher prelims he was ill for one of them. I phoned the school first thing and told them, they dealt with it and he was able to sit it a couple of days later when he had recovered.

She's got a really painful throat and has lost her voice. She's not going out and sleeping all the time. She has still got part of her dance exam to do.

Written ones are next week. But last year she went in for the exams and sat them getting sent home right after. That was like a virus!

Oh that's a shame :( I've been ill and I've been trying to avoid passing it on. We are one week (and 5 exams) down and one week (and 7 exams) still to go.

Hopefully she manages to rest and get rid of it over the weekend. Is the dance bit a practical exam?

It is a practical exam for dance wankers. Last year she was ill and did pretty poorly for her. Even the teacher noticed. 😢 she's been asleep all morning x

Oh no! Since it is still a prelim is there any flexibility on when she does it? How many days does she have to get better?

Not quite sure what happens. This week was the practicals and next week the written ones start. Main aim is to let her rest. She can't get out of bed for her lunch. Proves me keeping her off was the right thing. She wanted to go to school and argued!

Mine are on two weeks leave. No exams today so we've bribed DS1 to help DS2 with his maths today in preparation for his nat 5 prelim on Monday. The higher prelim is on Monday too but DS1 is not feeling the need for study for himself.
Your DD sounds like she has a real dose. Wrapped up in bed sounds the best plan.

We don't get leave at all. Her friends at the other school get the day before off.

Ds1 has only had one exam this week. Ds2 has had one every day except today. He has 1 per day Monday to Wednesday next week then has the last 2 days off. Ds1 has 4 exams over 3 days next week, Monday, Tuesday and Friday. For all the studying that's been done they could have been in school.

Today has been useful though I think as ds1 is helping ds2 in an area in which he excellent and ds2 struggles.

I'd push to delay on grounds of ill health. If it's a practical exam it's not like the integrity of the paper has been compromised by others being able to tell her the content.

With the removal of appeals the role of Prelims now is to prepare pupils for the real deal and to obtain evidence for use in exceptional circa (like ill health). So rather counter productive to sit an exam when I'll if you need the result from it in the event of being ill.

If that makes sense - I've been marking Prelims most of today and have lost the power of cohesive thought

Hope your DD is feeling better Groovee. DD had her S4 prelims in December and had all her results before Christmas. DS1 is now S6 🙈and has his prelims starting on 30th January. He gets study leave that week and two days of the following week. I've just stuck their N5/higher Adv exams on the calendar and it looks like a pretty stressful few weeks in May stockpiling wine already

She's much better thanks. Plenty vitamin C and fluid and rest seems to have helped. Letting her rest but she did go and do revision with a group of friends last night.

Finally Dd has her marks back. The Nat5 maths got an A.

English, modern studies and dance got A's and Biology was a C.

Yeah she's fine. She's lucky to be in a higher class of just 3 and her teacher has been giving them individual help and support where she felt they fell down on the exam. To go up to a B would make her year in the final exam x

I've learnt just to say to ds, "Are you happy that you know where you went wrong and how to sort it?"

So far, the answer has been, "Yes"

DS1 did no study at all, got an A and 4 B's in his Higher prelims, though a couple of them were just shy of an A. DS2 didn't fare so well. One A, 1 B, 1 C, 2 Ds and 2 Fails in his Nat5s :(

Teachers say that both the B and C can easily be turned into As, the 2 Ds were so close to passes and one teacher thinks he can turn the D to an A, he just misunderstood what he was meant to do. The other reckons he can scrape a pass with a small amount of work but is capable of better.

Interestingly one of the fails is similar in that he got no marks at all for one paper and it's a remembering exercise so could be on course to pass that with a little work/technique. the other is Maths which he struggles with but teacher reckons he should be aiming at at least a C with a possible B on the cards if he is willing to work. He doesn't want to repeat Maths so hoping it's motivation.

Maths was dd's issue last year. New teacher seems to really be working wonders.

Ds already has his Nat4 in maths. He's been getting 100%. He's learned not to tell Dd.

DS1 is helping DS2, he is on a bonus of between £30 and £50 if he gets him a pass (depends on grade how much).

I'm not that impressed with the Maths teacher he has to be honest but I don't think his issues necessarily lie at her door as he had issues before. The previous teacher and the one he was allocated to this year before I complained, however seems to have really confused him. It may be coincidence, but he was doing okay before him. I'm not the only one to complain...and I couldn't really ask for him to be moved again when he said that this teacher is better but not great.

Dd did her Nat5 prelims, the results are in.
A, B, C, D and two fails.
Eek, but we have it under control.

Last year's teacher was the only class to do badly. All the others had mostly A or B passes! But he retired so no come back. Dd says everything has been explained much better and they are much further on.

At least they are retired now and not able to do any more damage. DS2 really liked the poor teacher he had as a person, he just didn't think he could teach very well. One of those boffin types who are probably really intelligent, just not great at teaching children who aren't the same. DS1 has had the same teacher on occasions (own teacher absent) and he has no issues with him at all - but then he "gets" maths straight off.
