unauthorised absence

I have 2 children in primary school and recently requested from the headteacher 2 days leave as we are going on a short trip abroad as a present from a family member (my 40th birthday). We are going to Rome and as both chidren are really interested in history, I honestly feel this would be a beneficial educational experience for them (we plan to see all the historical sites). The headteacher wrote back saying he feels taking them out of school would have a detrimental effect on their education and the leave would be unauthorised. I must say I do strongly disagree and both have good attendance rates and are receiving extra tuition outside of school to help them progress further and we can catch up any missed work. Does anyone know what the consequences will be for me, as the trip is still going ahead. Thank-you

Check your LA's policy. Some LAs only prosecute in cases of persistent truancy after exhausting other avenues with the parents.

There may be a fine even for a first offence, and note that each parent can be fined separately for the absence of one child. However, in a situation such as yours I would guess that the amount of the fine might well be something you'd be willing to pay rather than miss this trip.

Although, in theory, you can be fined I suspect this is unlikely if it is only 2 days holiday and your children otherwise have good attendance levels.

Headteachers generally have very strict criteria to follow when allowing authorised absence. Lots will automatically reject any request for term time holiday, no matter how "worthy" it is .

It's a bit late now but for future I'd just let mine have a tummy bug, so much less hassel and no one cares if little ones say oh i wasn't ill we went on holiday afterwards.

How are you going to know what it is that they've missed?
Our school will not provide work for children absent on holiday.

Many LEAs now give headteachers no flexibility at all to approve absence in term time, and especially not for trips that could take place during the holidays. You may get a fine.

Thank you for you replies. I do know of parents who have told 'a little white lie' to get holiday approved but I still feel telling the truth is always best and anyway i don't want to put my children in a difficult position. I shall have to wait and see what the outcome is. Meanwhile my children are so excited and counting down the days, so whatever happens after i will worry about then. Life is too short not to have fun as a family and create happy memories whilst they are young.
