Should I ring midwife again to try and get my booking in appointment earlier?

Hi I was 8 weeks on wednesday and I still haven't been contacted by my midwife for the booking in appointment.

I contacted them last week and they said it would be between 9 and 10 weeks and the scan would be generated from that appointment.

But I failed to mention that I had a missed m/c in Jan of this year.

As the weeks go on I am getting more and more nervous about it all and was hoping for my scan at 12 weeks. But the longer they leave the booking in appointment the later my scan will end up being.

Do you think I should ring them again and ask ever so nicely for an appointment. (the lady I spoke to last time was a bit snotty).

Yes, I do think you should phone again.

I had my booking in at 10 weeks (I knew at 4 weeks, phoned for a GP appointmentn at 5 weeks to start the process, everything else was delays in the system).

I just got my scan date through and I'll be a couple of days short of 15 weeks when I get scanned.

So if it's important to you to get a prompt scan, phone again.

That does seem a long time to wait for your scan.

I did mention that I thought if I didn't get a booking in appointment till 10 weeks that it was a bit short notice to get me in for a scan at 12 weeks. This was the point she became snotty and said "scans now take place between 12-14 weeks, and your booking in appointment will not be before 9 weeks"

10 weeks and 12-14 weeks is usual now. TBH I wanted the scan as late as poss to reassure me I had got past the 12 week point, so think of it that way? I was much happier seeing a 14 week foetus than a 12 as last time it died at 13 weeks.

sadly I think kat2907 is right 10 weeks - 12/14 seems normal, but it is annoying. In our area they also seem keen to get you in on the later side of this which seemed like such a long time to wait.

Call if you're worried though, you should be entitled to a sympathetic ear.

Hi, I saw my MW at 7 weeks in the end as my dates were all over the place (which I found out at my 12.4 week scan) which ended up being at 10.5 and basically everything was okay but the scan was a bit of a non event in the sense that it was tiny and still to early to blab to the everyone!

But I live in Manchester so I was lucky my friend in Hertfordshires says they are no longer doing 12-14 week scans only 20+

isn't the scan at 12 weeks for nuchal reasons? ie. if there's a problem you know in time to make whatever decision and have further tests?

I'd phone and explain and say you'd like an earlier booking - I had mine really early this time just because I was there having bloods done

I live in a big city and apparently millions of us are having babies. My booking in appt had to be at 6 weeks to ensure I got a scan at 12 weeks and my hospital place at Christmas.
I friend who is due a week after me was not booked in until she was 8 weeks and now has to go to a hospital out of the area as the local one can not find space for her.

If it helps I didn't have my booking in until 11 weeks - and they managed to get my scan in at 12 weeks. The midwife rang the hospital and booked it there and then and just put me in for the first available one. And that's in a busy area so hopefully you should be ok.

You could try going to see your GP again and explaining how nervous you are and maybe she will book you in for an earlier scan? (In my area it is the GP who books you in for the 12 week scan - I didn't see the midwife for my booking-in appt until I was 14 weeks.)

If I were you though, I would save myself the stress and just go for a private scan. I had a lot of hassle arranging an early scan on the NHS this time round - I had a previous ectopic pregnancy so was really worried about it - so in the end I got it done privately at 7 weeks. Set my mind at rest immediately. It cost £80.

My booking appt is this mon i'll be 10 weeks on sun(i think according to lmp) and they have sent me a letter to say my scan will be after my appt!

thanx for all the advice- I dont know what to do really. I know there's no real reason why I should go on to have another missed m/c. But it is always in the back of my mind. And I wouldn't expect a scan prior to 12 weeks. I'm just so desperate to see a healthy heart beart. As last time it was so hard, thinking I was pg all that time when the baby had died weeks earlier.

I think maybe I just need to chill out and relax a bit.

can you just go to your Early Pregnancy Unit and explain your fears and get scanned there?

dinny- I dont know if they will scan at my epu without any symptoms. TBH I have never tried with any of my 4 pg's. I'm just not used to this waiting. With my 3 girls my booking in appointment was much earlier and i'm sure by this stage I had already been given the date to go for my scan.

With my m/c I hadn't managed to see a midwife at all before I started to miscarry at 12 weeks. They are very short staffed down here.

I just feel it's a shame that they dont offer more support to women during the first trimester.

phone up and explain you are very worried etc - see what they say (the EPU I mean)

EPUs won't do 'reassurance scans'.

Kat some do. My friend has a history of m/c and had a scan at the EPU at about 7 weeks. In my area the booking in is done at the same appt, after the scan at about 12 weeks.
