Baby poo: should we see a doctor?

10 week old BF baby generally does one very large bright yellow poo each day. On Tuesday I took her to a massage class where we worked on the tummy and "stimulated" the bowel. She also had her vaccines 1 week before this. During the class we were told to expect baby to poo more than usual that day. All was fine however apart from passing a fairly large blob of poo that day as if she had been unblocked.

However on wednesday she pooed during every single feed... I counted 11 times in total. I assumed this was due to the massage and she was still clearing out.

But,she is still pooing during every feed and they have now turned very green in colour but are a normal consistency. She seems ok in herself,maybe a bit fussy during feeds but thats it. Although she has also had a stuffy nose since her vaccines.

I've read that is could be a reaction to the vaccines, I'm also thinking perhaps it has something to do with the massage and I've also read about allergies. Ive also read about a milk imbalance but I express each evening and can see a very thick layer of cream on top of my milk so I assume I've plenty of hindmilk.

Do we need to see a doctor as her poo is getting more and more green? I'm not sure what to do as it's the weekend and the surgery is obviously closed.

It's ok. Most babies do green poos at some point. I remember worrying about my DD1 when she did it. Regarding the pooing more than usual I also wouldn't worry about that. They change their habits constantly OP....you get used to something they do and then WHAM...they stop that and start something else.

AS long as she's eating and wetting and is not hot or lethargic, you needn't worry.

Yes could be to do with the oral vaccine. Read the leaflet given but I'm sure it can turn poo green for however many weeks it is active.

Poo can turn green with viruses, colds, etc. It could be a reaction from the rotavirus vaccine which is fairly common. Just feed regularly and make sure you're getting regular wet nappies.

Green poo is only a worry if it goes on for long periods (think weeks) and then you'd want to rule out allergies but there would usually be other symptoms too.

At this age if they have a snotty nose it turns their poo green. Something to with them having no other way of processing it.

It will go back to normal

My DS's poo was exactly like this for a month or so after the rotavirus vaccine. Totally normal. Very annoying!

It changes all the time I wondered if it was the maturity of their gut bacteria. I think if they react badly when on solids that is a concern.

So we are still having green poos which are more frequent than they used to be and now contain mucus. Baby is more unsettled in general and has been feeding more during the night. She also cries before passing a bowel movement...

I think she is also teething as she has several white stumps on her gums and is wanting to chomp down on my finger.

Should I take her to a doctor? Do you think it can wait until Monday? The green slimy poo is getting worse.

My 5 month old had this fairly recently. We were assured by the HV that slimy green poos were normal for a BF baby but I knew there was something weird going on. We spoke to our GP who sent off a stool sample and it turned out to be shigella - fairly common bacterial infection - and she gave us antibiotics. Might be worth giving your GP a call to see if they can send off a sample for you just to make sure there's nothing like that going on.

It can happen if the baby is having lots of (the more watery) foremilk, and not enough of the thicker hind milk. Had it with my LO and was told to use the same boob for a couple of feeds before swapping sides.

My DS3 had campylobacter as a newborn with frothy green poo which was foul smelling. I'd go to the doctor to be honest. He was totally fine after some abs.

We had some awful green poo after vaccinations, and actually fairly often during first few months, now I think of it. He was very windy too. It all resolved once his tongue tie was separated- colic, green poos... the awful bloating. Has your baby been checked for TT? Sometimes it takes a little while to become evident- and a problem.

She has had her tongue tie cut twice now and I'm pretty sure it hasnt grown back again. I think I'll take her to the GP just to rule anything out as it keeps niggling away at me that something doesnt seem quite right. With the shingella and campylobactor was every poo green or some normal? Some look fairly normal and some not normal at all

My EBF baby had spells of bright green poos, once lasting a couple of weeks

After researching a lot, I saw it could be excess iron. Very unscientific but I stopped taking the prenatal vits (I was using them up before going back to BF vits ) and green poo stopped almost overnight. May or may not have been the cause, but was quite a dramatic response!

With the campylobacter every poo was green. And very very smelly 🤢

I would consider CMPA (dairy allergy) mucus is a sign of the gut trying to repair itself. Worth considering a food diary and see if there is any link.
