how long on average does a baby use a play gym for?

Hi there

I have a really good play gym and my sister is expectinga baby in December so I was going to buy it for her as a present. In December my DS will be 7.5months. Will he have grown out of the playgym by then? Im wondering if I could instead just lend her our one and buy her something different if ours will just be sitting in shed iyswim.

lend her yours. i spend years tripping over ours and would have happily set fire to it was it not for my sensible husband who wanted to get his money's worth.

Yep, he'll definitely have grown out of it by then - he won't lie on his back and look at things for very long! Definitely lend her yours and get something else for her...

i think they tend to grow out of it about 6 months-ish, pretty sure he will have finished with it @ 7.5. once they can sit up they are past the play gyms really

My DS is 9.5 months and he still uses his -- only it's not on the floor but in his travel cot which we use as a play pen for when I need to leave him some where safe for a short time.

I find it softens the blow of being left in the play pen. I even have the play mat's arches up with his long time favourite toy dangling. He is crawling and standing all the time but he still loves to sit and play with that toy. Our mat plays music when he stands in a certain spot too which he likes.

So I vote you keep it!

My DD is 3.5 months and already growing out of hers I would say. She's much more interested in getting upright and handling things now. She gets bored on her back very easily these days.

my dd is 6 months and is pretty bored by it at the moment. She can now reach the toys and will lie under it for a little while grabbing them but the interest is short lived. She is having lots of tummy time at the moment as she is trying desperately to crawl and the play gym is too small and too slippery to do that on.

I got rid of ours when DD was about four months - she'd lost interest (to be honest was never madly interested in it anyway) and I was sick of it being on the floor gathering dust.

We got rid of ours at around 7 months- she stopped being interested in lying on her back playing and just tended to get tangled up in it and bash her head on it as she rolled and wriggled around. Ours was a hand-me-down and I'm glad we didn't splash out on a new one for such a short period of time. Your sister will appreciate it I'm sure.

My DD is 4mths and is sitting up already so not overly keen on laying down that much any more. She will only lay on the playmat for short whiles now. I guess ours will be gone by christmas.. to make way for the next deluge of toys!

Id say lend her yours.

My 9 m.o. still enjoys playing with his, just from a sitting/crawling position.

Until they can sit up unsupported ime (4months plus).

Weren't using them by 9 months (other than as a place to plonk them daytime naps).

We are still using our at 9.5 months, but our DD isn't crawling and has only been sitting well for about a month or so, so it is still a good novelty to play with from a sitting position, and she rolls around under it. Our is quite good, with lots of different stuff going on, so I think that is why she is still interested - it's grown with her. It's not about tryong to reach stuff now, but examingin the toys, rattling them, banging other toys against them etc. She doesn't use it as much now, but at least once a day. Oh, also her new favourite thing is to be pulled into a standing position and hold on to the top of the arches, looking at the leaves and the unit which plays music (with me there to catch her of course, it isn't that sturdy and neiother are her legs!)!

Having said that, none of my other 'mum' friends are still using them - I think ours is a bit 'slow' on the physical development front!

My DTs are 2.8 and I am still using ours!

I got a very large Taf toys ones which was ideal for twins. When they grew out of the dangly toys - I removed the toys and the arches and it is now a very colourful rug in their bedroom.

It is bright and fun and we love it in their room. Have used it as a place to point / steer the boys when they were being sick and so has saved the carpet on numerous occasions - just goes in the wash.

They went through a phase of walking around the house with one of the arches each and waving them around when they were around 18 months.

We definately got value for money out of ours. I think a lot of "baby" stuff can get rescurrected and have a second wind when the kids are older.

Oh yes, we have a vomit catching Fireman Sam street scene type rug in the boys room. Comes with handy rubber backing for those extra pukey moments!
