Find out how much Mumsnet testers saved with Carphone Warehouse’s new Energy Saver service

(119 Posts)
JustineBMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 04-May-18 09:38:04

This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnetters who have tested Carphone Warehouse’s new Energy Saver service, either by going in store or via their app (Energy Saver on iOS and Google Play).

Here’s what Carphone Warehouse has to say: “We’re famous for getting people a better mobile deal. And now we’re using our expertise to help you save on your energy bill. Switching your energy supplier may seem like a lot of work – but don’t worry, that’s what we’re here for.”

Testers, please answer the below questions:
1. Did you use the app or go in store to get your quote?
2. How much did you/ could you save?
3. How easy did you find the service to use?
4. Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member?

All selected testers who give their feedback will be entered into a prize draw where three MNers will win a £100 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list). PLUS if you’ve saved money and you’re happy to share this on Twitter, please do so using the Twitter handles @MumsnetInsight and @CPWTweets, plus the hashtag #cpwenergysaver to be entered into another prize draw where one MNer or GNer will win a £100 voucher for the store of their choice.

If you’re not a tester but you’d like to try the service out please feel free to do so. It’s useful to know who your energy supplier is and which tariff you’re on before you start, but the process should take just a few minutes (and the average saving is £273!)

Thanks and good luck!

1. Did you use the app or go in store to get your quote?

Used the app

2. How much did you/ could you save?

£160 per year

3. How easy did you find the service to use?

Very easy to use

4. Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member?

I would if it were just a website rather than an app. I hate having lots of apps cluttering my phone and taking up room when something like this you will only use once every couple of years. It's a great tool but I would prefer it as a web link rather than an app.

1. Did you use the app or go in store to get your quote?

Used the app.
2. How much did you/ could you save?

I can save £72 a year which is great!!! That would pay for my little boys first Christmas so going to look into changing energy suppliers

3. How easy did you find the service to use?

Very easy!!! Even someone who isn't great with computers could use it and it's so fast and gives you many options to choose from too. Tells you not just how much you can save but also estimate of yearly bill, if a contract, any exit fees etc. Great app!

4. Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member?

Yes 100%. Infact I will be doing as my sister is looking to change suppliers so this would be very helpful

Youssef15 Fri 04-May-18 18:22:34

Fab app. In just few minutes filling a short form you know what is the cheapest elect/ gas supplier for your usage . I'm definitely changing my supplier ( after asking the landlord)

greenjojocat Fri 04-May-18 18:33:03

1. Did you use the app or go in store to get your quote? Used the app

2. How much did you/ could you save? Around £130 per year but with a company that didn't look to have good customer satisfaction so decided not to change.

3. How easy did you find the service to use? Yes relatively, it was a bit confusing trying to find my current tariff listed under provider, the exact one wasn't there so the figures were slightly out. The app was fine to use although there is significant advertising so I wouldn't use it as first choice over an impartial service.

4. Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member? No I don't think so in this instance, I have used other services in the past that have been better and not needed to download app or visit a store.

Whenasuitcasejustwontdo Fri 04-May-18 18:33:59

1. Did you use the app or go in store to get your quote?
I used the app.

2. How much did you/ could you save per year?
Over £500!

3. How easy did you find the service to use?

Really easy; I used the estimates to trial that particular part and it pretty much matched the actual costs.

4. Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member?
I would, but would prefer it as a website rather than another app.

Thanks.

The app
2. How much did you/ could you save?
£149
3. How easy did you find the service to use?
Very easy
4. Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member?
I would - however it didn’t have my current provider so used my previous provider to compare prices! Means it’s slightly limited to each individual

Estraya Fri 04-May-18 18:58:08

1. Did you use the app or go in store to get your quote? I used the app
2. How much did you/ could you save? £384
3. How easy did you find the service to use? It was pretty straightforward. Much quicker than I expected.
4. Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member? Yes definitely.

MESSING2 Fri 04-May-18 19:02:21

1) app
2) Nothing - we are apparently on a good deal! The other deals came out as £50+ more expensive.
3) App is very simple to use - very straightforward to use and took less than 5 mins to give a result. All you need is your latest bill. It was useful to give you the option of putting either spend or number of kWh and whether it was monthly/annual etc.
4) Yes, based on the ease of using the app. I did find it slightly annoying, however, to receive a marketing email afterwards thanking me for downloading the app and saying I would receive monthly updates about the best fuel deals. I can't imagine many folk in their right mind would want to reassess their energy supplier on a monthly basis rather than annually. Also, would be good to have this as an opt-in rather than opt-out.

CheeseandGherkins Fri 04-May-18 19:03:18

1. Did you use the app or go in store to get your quote?

I used the app

2. How much did you/ could you save?

It said I could save £1,105 a year BUT that was with the estimation of using the same amount of energy throughout the rest of the year. We've just had one of the coldest winters in years and my bill was for the last 4 months. I pay the bills as they come up because I dislike direct debits. I feel they should take the difference in bills over the year into account.

3. How easy did you find the service to use?

Very easy.

4. Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member?

I would but only after making them aware of the possible issue with the app overestimating supply.

Iamnotanugget Fri 04-May-18 19:12:41

1. Did you use the app or go in store to get your quote?

I used the app.

2. How much did you/ could you save?

The cheapest deal would cost me an extra £5 per year. I even looked at getting gas and electricity separately but that still cost an extra £3.

3. How easy did you find the service to use?

Very easy.

4. Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member?

No, purely because there seemed no easy way of looking at just green tariffs. If this feature was added then yes I would.

1. Did you use the app or go in store to get your quote?

Used the app

2. How much did you/ could you save?

£63 per year

3. How easy did you find the service to use?

extremely easy to use

4. Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member?

I would if it had a specific website, as a lot of my family prefer using a webpage rather than an app, but yes I would as I would say 50% would use the app and the other 50% I could do it for them, ive just discussed this with my mum who is keen to get a good deal so will be going on later to have a look, so thank you.

Did you use the app or go in store to get your quote?
I used the app.

How much did you/could you save?
£600! (this is based on our last year's usage and there are particular reasons why it was disproportionately high, but even so it suggests we really need to switch asap).

How easy did you find the service to use?
Very easy - it took seconds to do. Our previous year's usage was clearly stated on our most recent bill and this, together with the name of our current provider and tariff was all the information I needed to use the service. All the info you'd need was very clearly displayed, and if you wanted to switch immediately you could click to do so or there was the option to speak to someone. However I was directed to the app and I'm not sure I'd have gone looking for an app for this particular service unless prompted - I'm more familiar with searching for comparisons on websites.

Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member?
Definitely, and would suggest using the app.

noo1985 Fri 04-May-18 19:37:14

1. Did you use the app or go in store to get your quote?
Used the app
2. How much did you/ could you save?
£175 per year
3. How easy did you find the service to use?
Very easy as long as you have an idea of your current supply information
4. Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member?
I would but the only thing I found was that the company that gave me the cheapest deal they had very little information on which meant I wouldnt necessarily switch. IN the end there were actually very little amount of companies who gave me a lower rate. I think it is simple to use so would recommend in this respect but would urge people to investigate the companies before automatically opting for the cheapes

1. Did you use the app or go in store to get your quote?
App

2. How much did you/ could you save?
£119

3. How easy did you find the service to use?
Easy except for putting in useage. I wanted to put monthly kWh but it would only let me input annual £.

4. Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member?
No. As well as the above annoyance, the deals on offer were not as good as other comparisons.

1. Did you use the app or go in store to get your quote?
App

2. How much did you/ could you save?
£92

3. How easy did you find the service to use?
User friendly and simple to use if you have all the info to hand (e.g. usage).

4. Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member?
YEs for ease etc.

WheresTheCoffee Fri 04-May-18 21:12:12

1. Did you use the app or go in store to get your quote?
I used the app
2. How much did you/ could you save?
£603!
3. How easy did you find the service to use?
Very easy
4. Would you recommend Carphone Warehouse Energy Saver to a friend or family member? Possibly. I use very little throughout the year but have the heating on winter, my most recent reading doesn't give an accurate reflection of my usual use. The system didn't seem to allow for that and this skewed the yearly result price I think.
