No periods and birth control

I started taking the mini pill about a year ago. I then stopped in July as my relationship finished. I'm 50 and since July have not had a period. I have night sweats and minor hot flushes during the day. As I'm not having periods do I need to worry about birth control anymore? I'm hoping that no periods means I can't get pregnant. Or do I need to see my GP and get a blood test?

The rule is a year without periods before you can discontinue contraception.

My Gp said you need to wait a year till you have had no periods before you stop using contraceptives. And two years if you are under 50.
