How everyone, does anyone work as a maternity assistant band 2 and could offer some insight into the role ? Eg pros and cons I’m looking to change jobs and have no relevant healthcare experience but have significant early years experience. Thanks

What qualifications would you need for the role? Would it be a sideways move or would you need training?

In same boat looking at maternity care assistant but never worked in healthcare before.

Got an interview for an antenatal job in a few weeks and very daunting thinking about making the jump to nhs but yet it also just feels like a natural direction for me at this stage of my life. Who knows!

Bump …

I worked as a Maternity Support Worker and loved the job.
I'd had a few different roles within the NHS and had transferable skills.
I did an apprenticeship, one day in the classroom and the rest on the ward. I found some of the rotations really hard (nights on post natal were a killer for me).
After completing my Diploma (MSW with Paediatric support) I worked full time on the antenatal ward and banked on the EPU.
Loved the job, felt very valued.
However I was on band 3.

It was a great starting place for me. I started as a maternity care assistant, intending to do a midwifery degree. I realised fairly quickly that this wasn't the right role for me but it gave me exposure to other healthcare professions that I hadn't considered and off the back of this experience I got a university place.

Pros - loved the buzz and adrenaline rush of labour ward. Felt like I could make a difference to women and their babies.

Cons - lots of cleaning! It was often busy and stressful and I loathed the postnatal wards because they were so understaffed and stretched.

Hi, all thanks so much for all your responses l, I didn’t realise anyone had replied.the role is as someone mentioned as part of an apprenticeship, but I’m just concerned about the fact that I’m aware that maternity wards struggle with staffing issues.I feel completely stuck in my current role (education in early years) and really feel like I need a change, just unsure whether to make the move or stick it out.

@Wanderlustnearorfar did you make the move?

Wanderlustnearorfar · 07/09/2022 20:01

@pancakes22 sorry I have only just seen this. No haven’t made the move yet. Really unsure what career move to make. Feel a little lost at the moment. And have currently stuck to where I am.
