Smelly Dyson v6

chuckiecheese · 08/08/2018 16:57

I have a dyson v6 and before I went on holiday gave it a through clean including the filter. I left the filter to dry in our airing cupboard and on our return put it back in the hoover.
I used it on Monday & it stinks! Washed it again Monday and left to dry again & used it again now and it still smells REALLY fusty Confused

Any advice Smile

Probably not the answer you're looking for but I've purchased new filters for my V6 Absolute via Amazon before - weren't expensive. That was because of them stinking of dog rather than getting musty from not drying properly/quickly enough, but same end result. I have heard since that washing with bio laundry detergent is better at removing odours than the washing up liquid I'd been using.

Thanks for your reply.

I washed mine last night in bio and left to dry in airing cupboard. Will check later to see if 'fust' has gone but it seems to be a smell that just wont go Sad

Seems expensive to keep replacing filter but that is my next option I guess.Wink

Have you got a dog ? My mums always stinks of dog . Have you take the whole thing apart as you can wash pretty much each part ( look on you tube ) .

I used to have the dog odour issue with my dyson, now I put a couple of drops of essential oil on the filters after I clean them and the house smells amazing after I've vaccummed. Not sure whether it would help cover a musty smell, but could be worth a try

One thing to be aware of is that it takes way longer to dry the filters than you'd think. I always wait until they feel bone dry and then give it an extra day after that. I found that has helped to keep the new ones fresher than our old ones were. Helps that we have a spare vacuum cleaner to use while the cordless is out of action.

The official Dyson video and the pictures in the owner manual are USELESS when it comes to cleaning this filter.

I followed the instructions religiously for the first six months until my Dyson became unusable. When I tried to use it, it smelled horrible and it would IMMEDIATELY go into the pulsing on and off business. High power was unusable.

In use, dirty air is sucked into the BIG end and goes down the INSIDE of the fabric cone. It is pulled THROUGH the fabric and exhausts through the motor. Any dirt in the air settles DOWN into the SMALL end. If you follow the official Dyson instructions to wash this thing, all you do is push wet dirt down into the small end. As it dries, it begins to mold or something and that is where the HORRIBLE smell comes from.

TO WASH
There are three little plastic tabs that hold the fabric part of the filter onto its plastic frame. They are right under the big end, next to the openings. You might have to use a flat tip screwdriver the first time to force the tabs out of their holes. When you get the three tabs out of their holes, you can then pull the fabric part off of the frame.

1 Remove the cloth part from the frame.
2 Turn the LITTLE END UP.
3 Wash under running water.
4 Using warm water and dish soap, gently massage the filter from little end to big end. You will be amazed at how much dirt comes out the big end.

When I removed mine the first time, I found a glob of filthy, smelly gunk down in the small end. I cleaned it out, then washed and dried the fabric part. My Dyson cleaned like it was new again! Imagine that . . . A PROPER cleaning was all it needed . . . .

Spot on Oldbaldguy
I just took the cover off and there was 2 inches of gunk in the plastic frame that supports the filter fabric.
Just to think the last two times I have washed the filter with this inside I have just been adding to it's mass, wetting it and then drying - disgusting!! No wonder it smells.
Also with the fabric off the frame you can clean it properly.

Every now and then I get my husband to hoover up a teaspoon of washing powder. It keeps the machine smelling lovely.

I used the video on YouTube to strip and clean ours. Was strangely fascinating in a geeky way.
