Hello :)
So, I noticed some time ago this vertical line on my fingernail. I trying not to Google it, but someone in my family says it could be something more concerning and I should fgo to GP and ask for some advise. I cane here to ask you first lovely people, is any of you have had something similar?? I really don't want to go to GP and take they time with something like my fingernail. I have seriously ill child at home and got many appointments with doctors and just feel stupid to go with something like this. What do you think, should I go?
Sorry for the picture, I know it's not a most lovely picture in the world 😊😊😁❤️ thank you for your help :)

Most likely a vitamin deficiency rather than anything sinister.

Cattitudes · 09/02/2021 13:17

With things like this I tend to go to pharmacist and see if they recommend the GP.

legalseagull · 09/02/2021 13:31

It just looks like the nail bed has been damaged and the nail is now ridged. This wouldn't worry me at all. I have one fingernail which grows ridgy whilst the others are fine too. Send a photo to your GP if you're worried.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 09/02/2021 13:37

I’ve had this before, it just grew out eventually.
I have naturally quite ridgy nails and always have done

LillyEmma · 09/02/2021 14:03

Thanks for your comments, the thing is its not growing... Its always there from few months at least. So maybe like the lagalseagull said the nail bed is damaged. I will go to pharmacy and ask them for advise. Thank you all :)

I have a ridge up one fingernail. It’s been there as long as I can remember, I’ve always assumed I must have damaged the nail bed as a child.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 09/02/2021 14:12

Actually I’ve just inspected my nails again and I do still have the line, so it’s been there for a number of years.. it had just blended in to my other ridges and I’d stopped noticing.

I can assure you nothing terrible has happened in those years, my finger hasn’t dropped off Grin

But of course if you’re worried it’s always worth checking.

Would you say the line has any brown in it? I can't quite decide from the picture.

A vertical brown or black streak on a nail can be a sign of melanoma if it doesn't grow out, which is probably what your relative was thinking of. A telephone appointment with your GP wouldn't be a waste of their time in order to rule that out - they might want to see a photograph and could then go from there with either wanting to see in person or reassuring you that it doesn't fit the criteria for anything more sinister because of xyz.

Hi LillyEmma! I have the same vertical pinkish line in my index finger nail, I would say for a year now. I did got an opposing ent a couple of months ago and was told not to worry, but it’s still there and can’t help but Google it which is scary! Did you got to see your GP / pharmacist? Any updates? Thanks a lot!

Onthegrapevine · 23/06/2021 16:30

Have you had covid? There are articles about this happening post infection.

Aparekas · 30/06/2021 09:47

I haven’t been diagnosed with covid officially, but who know… I could have been asymptotic. Still, covid nails refer to horizontal lines rather than vertical. @LillyEmma did you got an appointment with your GP? Smile thanks!!!

LillyEmma · 05/07/2021 15:27

Hi, thank you for your response:) i didnt have covid, this line was on my nail long time now i just saw it on the picture and it was on my nail like two years but smaller. I didnt notice this before 😁 in my beauty salon lady who did my nails told me that i had to damaged my nail matrix and sadly it wil never be the same, 😭 thank you all for posting 💜❤️🙂

Just wondering if anyone else has the same problem and did it go away

Mattmum · 12/01/2022 14:22

This white streak, and if it has subungal keratosis(extra build up of nail below along the line is what we call as Onychopapilloma disguised as Luekonychia. This is normally a benign tumor on the nailbed so nothing to worry about. But if it is putting pressure and has tenderness because it is pushing the nerve, you can have it removed via nail surgery, otherwise, nothing to worry about.

Mattmum · 12/01/2022 14:27

This seems to be a tumor and if your nail color is fastly changing, that could be something serious. Subungal Melanoma can have different color but if your nail is rapidly changing color on those streaks, go ahead and consult with your dermatologist as it could be alarming

I’d get it checked out by a gp.

AE1283 · 13/07/2023 14:35

Did you ever see a dermatologist for this? I have one almost the same as yours and it hasn’t gone away or grown out. Been trying to get in for an appointment for months and finally have one scheduled this month.

AE1283 · 13/07/2023 15:39

This is what mine looks like, very very faint but there and hasn’t gone away. Noticed it about 6 months ago. This nail grows slower than others now.

Julie123246 · 14/07/2023 15:52

Hi I still have the same problem but also have osteo arthritis in my fingers I'm seeing a rheumatologist who's done hand scans just waiting for the results

Hi Julie, I’ve had the same as you a myxoid cyst. I had mine removed in February, finger is still slightly swollen and haven’t regained full movement back! Not an op I would recommend!

Julie123246 · 15/07/2023 00:29

Tbh I am managing ok the cyst dosnt really bother me other than my nails arnt growing I get more pain with the osteo arthrytus but I'm been tested for lupus and already have fibro and diabetis and gastrophetisis aswell as an under active thyroid but at the time I was just curious about what it was hope you are OK won't be opting for a surgery any time soon had a hystectomy and a pelvic floor repair never want to see an operating theatre again x

feeona123 · 15/07/2023 01:53
