Working my holiday

I don't know if anyone can help me or not. I work as a nurse one night a week in a care home.
During corona virus I've been doing lots of extra shifts to help out but now that's settled I'm back to one night a week.
I had put in for annual leave in April but didn't take that as I was needed to do extra shifts so I cancelled it.
This is now re scheduled for Monday 3rd August. I haven't had a holiday since November. The problem is I've been put on a night shift the Sunday night the 2nd.. I had booked accommodation as I had presumed I wouldn't be working into the start of my holiday
I have to try and get a swap which maynot be possible. My arguement is that I will be working on the 3rd of August until 08.00 so how is that a holiday. Ill also need to sleep before I can drive to my holiday let.
I've spoken to human resources who say there is nothing they can do.
Has anyone got any experience of this.

It sounds right. You've booked the 3rd, working on the 2nd. I appreciate that, as it's a night shift you're working into the 3rd but that's how night shifts work. Do you usually work the same day each week?

No it depends. My manager said I worked fixed shifts but they do vary. I'll know to request the weekend off before annual leave in future.

Yes, I imagine you would need to ask for holiday covering your shifts in a particular timescale. I work different shifts so I put in a request for holiday covering shifts from saturday to Saturday if that's what I need.

I disagree, it comes up often with night workers and you should tell them either cancel the holiday day, so you can re-use or you need to finish at midnight!!
8 hours on an annual leave day...is not annual leave Smile

I agree, this is really poor rota management. Does your organisation use electronic rostering? I only ask because the programme I've seen used wouldn't "allow" this to be done & would send an error message that you would be rostered onto a leave day.

No off duty is done manually. I do feel that to work into Yr annual leave although allowed still is pretty poor. I also felt upset after helping out with shifts during the height of the corona virus and the stress this involves has felt like a smack in the teeth.
I've still got one person I can ask for a swap so here's hoping.
