How are holidays worked out if I work compressed hours?

I am thinking of applying to work compressd hours under the flexible working regs. I am proposing to work 35 hours over 4 days. I am currently entitled to 30 days holiday per year plus bank holidays.

I can't see why they would change which doesn't mean you would gain any days however. Say 30 days at 7 hours a day at the moment = 210 hours you would still get 210 hours but would need more for each days holiday.

Good luck with your request.

The short answer is 38 days / 5 * 4 = 30.4 days (including bank holidays).

The proof of the answer is to convert the holiday into an hourly equivalent. Ie you currently get 35*7 hours = 266 hours holiday. Each day will now last for 8.75 hours so you will be entitled to 266/8.75 = 30.4 days per annum.

That's the easy bit. Getting your company to agree can be a tough one. Good luck.

sorry, I should have written 387 = 266 not 357 = 266 (the answer is still the same)

Thanks for the replies.

So atm I am entitled to 30 days plus bank hols but if I do 4 days then I get 30.4 days inc bank hols. So, even though I will be doing the same number of hours I will actually be worse off leave wise Confused.

Why would it be 38*7?

You are no worse off. You get exactly the same number of hours holiday. And you will get exactly the same number of weeks (except for the bank holiday effect).

EG you currently get 6 weeks of holidays (if you took them in weekly chunks). If you work compressed hours you will STILL get those same 6 weeks holiday (instead of them 'costing' 5 days for each week, they will only cost 4 days per week - ie 6 weeks * 4 days = 24 days vacation used whereas before it would be 30 days used). You very slightly suffer from fact that bank holidays are usually pro-rated too now (depends on contract) so instead of being entitled to 8 days you are usually entitled to only 6.4 days. However any bank holiday that naturally falls on your day off anyway doesn't count so you can add back a day when this happens. In fact if you choose Monday as your normal day off you sort of 'gain' extra holiday (at least 4 days a year of your total entitlement will not be 'spent' because you will be off anyway, so you will end up with 6.5 weeks holiday of your choosing, instead of 6 weeks). But that is probably TMI if your head was already exploding.

It is 38 * 7 because you currently work 7 hours a day 5 days a week. and for that you are given 38 days holiday a year (266 hours). You get the same number of hours when you do compressed working, but each working day is longer, hence the number of days reduces.

Leave should be converted in to hours and public holidays also converted in to hour sand added to the calculation. Each day taken off is then deducted at the rate of 8.75 hours. This means you are treated equally to someone working a 35 hour 5 day week.

It's the bank holiday thing that's confusing. If there are 8 bh in a year then at my work place this would equate to 8*7 hrs = 56 hours. However, because my working day will normally be 8.75, I will only actually get 56/8.75= 6.4 days.

So this means I am worse off doesn't it?

You dont deduct any that fall on your day off so you don't lose out overall.

StillSquiffy · 30/11/2011 20:03

As I pointed out before, you will be better off if you take your normal day off as a Monday. Otherwise it depends on when the holidays fall each year.

You won't be worse off at all. You will effectively get fewer days holiday than before, but you will be paid more for each day you take off than before.

You are currently entitled to 38 days in total, which is 7.6 weeks.

If you work 4 days a week you only need 30.4 days to get 7.6 weeks off, so the amount of time off you get will be exactly the same. Fewer days but the same number of hours, the same as your working week.
