Breast feeding tips and boppy cushions

Hi this is my first post on this board. Iam 37weeks with my second baby. I breast fed my DS for 5 months but found it very stressfull. I had mastitis, cracked bleeding nipples (which did improve once we got the hang of latching) and 2 abcesses. The abcesses were both on my left breast and my DS never really fed well on that side.
Iam determined to succeed this time and wonder if anybody has tips which will help. Also wonder if anyone has tried the boppy cushion and how it compares to other breast feeding cushions. Also does anywhere in uk stock it or do you have to order online. If so what sites
Thanks for any suggestions

Hi Babyramone - firstly welcome to MN! Lots of people will have some advice for you I expect. I don't know about the boppy cushion but I used a v-shaped cushion that supported the baby's weight so I could concentrate on latching on properly. A comfortable position is everything isn't it, you don't want the baby pulling down on you (owwww). Have you tried looking on Google?

Hi Babyramone - I used a curved beanbag cushion with dd and found it very useful. The website www.kellymom.com is useful for advice. Good luck!

I used the my brest friend pillow
Found it much easier than using a normal pillow or a beanbag as baby didn't slip down if I moved a bit

This website sells it www.expressyourselfmums.co.uk

I think the boppy pillow might be sold under a different name now but not sure

Hi there and welome to MN I used my brest friend for both of my babies (they're still babies so I can call them that!!) I dont use it anymore but my dd, 21 months, sits in the middle of it on the floor!!! and lays her bunny on the pillow part! I also found the normal pillow just slipped away, hope this helps

Hi everyone thanks for your advice. I used a normal pillow last time but found positioning tricky, was all awkward though think that more to do with me than pillow had SPD and sore back so never seemed to find position that worked. Hopefully will be more relaxed this time. I have a friend with twins and she uses the my breast friend one, has them on at same time, looks amazing.
Thnks for the wed sites will check them out.
Also had look at Argos and they have a nursing pillow I may consider.
thanks again.

hi
i'm expecting second baby in November. First DS will be three then. I got a boppy in John Lewis / Waitrose in Salisbury at the time but have since moved so dont know if they still sell them. It IS a very useful firm little cushion which clings round your waist at a good height and makes breastfeeding much easier. I even managed to have meals while he fed on my lap (no hands!) on the boppy. My neighbour borrowed it and did the same with her little girl!
Anyway, have found a link to buy boppy cushions on amazon.com/baby?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21.

Also, a good tip for mastitis is to take Arnica (buy it in Boots). It shifted my mastitis when antibiotics couldn't.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hi

I bought a boppy when pg with ds1 but didn't use it for long as I found he would slip down in between me and the cushion which I found really annoying, so I wouldn't recommen them. I also have a standard V-pillow which I think I bought from Matalan, last time around I used it to support my back in pg and afterwards but with ds2 (currently 15 days old!) I am using it this time round but not on my lap but to the side of me as folded in half and upright it is just the right height to rest my arm on when feeding. hth

Hi
Just browsing and just to let your board know I stock The Boppy Feeding Pillow.I sell on the U.K EBay but am in the process of setting up a web page where these brilliant pillows will be on sale you will get me through google if you google boppy pillow. These pillows are designed for feeding right through to helping your babies tummy muscles develop they have won lots of awards in the U.S.A. of course you can make do with anything that will support your arms while feeding as I did 26 years ago whilst breast feeding my son but these pillows fit snuggly round your waist if you buy just an ordinary pillow it will still flop round the front where you need the support so still you will get an aching back especially when feeding time gets longer......
Anyway will check back incase anybodys interested later
Thanks for reading
P.S I breastfeed all my 3 children and I wish I'd have had one of these!

I found the Widgey pillow was my saviour from both backache and poor attachment. Not seen the Boppy but would definately recommend the Widgey - also good to prop baby up in safely as they get older. Loads of stockists.

Thrupenny Bits Breastfeeding pillows are definately the lovliest and are portable have a look - I personally couldn't manage without a breastfeeding cushion so if you can't carry one around it might be a problem www.thrupennybits.co.uk/ these ones tie on so my little boy didn't slip down the gap. Initially I had a boppy which was fine to use at home (not very attractive though) and far too big to carry around. The Thrupenny Bits breastfeeding cushion even converts to a bag! I couldn't recommend it highly enough.
