What do you think of Nettle as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

Can I really only expect this type of reaction?

I like it a lot before I thought of the inevitable stinging aspect

It's a veyr pretty name. There are sorts of nettle that don't sting and you can also make nice tea...so not all bad!

Look into the deeper origins of it etymologically if you want a quick comeback - not sure what you'll find but could be helpful!
Otherwise as suggested Lettice is beautiful, think it means happiness.

Absolutely.

I thought it was a joke. Sorry.

Or use it as a nickname for something like Janette, iyswim

Nettie you might be able to get away with. To nettle means to irritate though, I think it might be one nature name too far. I know of a little girl called Sage, bit different but rather sweet.

there are so many pretty plant names for girls, please don't choose Nettle.

Folklore

Also the hedge nettle doesn't sting, known as Stachys

Report
Pielight · 31/08/2009 14:58

Yes, you could get away with Nettie, but it's not all that.

Sage
Bay
Lettice
Loveage

All better variations?

I like it and as far as the 'poor child' comments go I think it's ridiculous to think something like this will cause any lasting damage to a child. You go for it if you like it. What's wrong with being unusual. it's hardly child abuse and why should you change your mind about something you like just because there are idiots in the worrld who might resort to bullying someone for their name!

nettle isn't a bad name, it's a lovely name.

I suspect origins are from 'net' ie something knotted, in the sense that the roots are rather knotted and form a net. Possibly. They are a bugger to dig up

Lettice and Lovage are far worse imo.
