Where do people get the idea that Lois is short for Eloise.

I have seen this a few times on here in the last year or so.
Lois is NOT and has never been short for Eloise.
They are two completly seperate names.

Rant over.

Hadn't heard anyone say that and I agree with you. Dd2's middle name is Eloise, and the name Lois never came into it.

Both lovely names mind.

Well, as far as I knew it was Timothy's Grandmother, Timothy from the bible
I hadn't realise he was Welsh.

Also, it is mainly used in America these days, there is even a Lois society made up of loads of American Ladies called Lois.

Regardless, her name (to us) is pronouced Loh is like her Great Aunt

Well, I suggested that because I thought, why not? have never known anybody who is called Lois but who has Eloise on the bc, but why not? it's not a ginormous leap.

Can't believe how many there are. I thought it was really unusual. It's one of those mumsnet names I think. Rare in rl, ubiquitous on mn.

Awww that's awful - I would have been fuming .

My Lois has had a few hospital appointments over the last six months and the same nurse each and every time keeps calling her Louis - despite me quite clearly pointing out she's a girl (fair enough she's not got much hair yet, even though she's two ) and repeating Lois each time she says it. Dp thought I was making it up until he came along on Xmas eve, he was in stitches and is convinced the nurse was on a wind up mission...I'm not so sure .

I was at docs and a new mum had a 'Georgie'. Anyway, the nurse came out and called 'Geoffrey!'. We all looked around the room thinking, WHO saw fit to call their child Geoffrey? Then Georgie's mum realised the nurse must have meant her, so grabbed baby and ran in quickly. I always say "how's little geoffrey?" now when I see her. Oh I'm so funny
