Too outdated?

Thoughts on Luella? Is it too outdated?
Thinking either Lu, Lulu, or Elle for nickname options.
My nan was Lucille but went by Lu and my gram kept suggesting Luella as a name for my cousin's baby (she has a Lincoln) but I don't know if it's too old fashioned for a baby.

(I'm American if that matters)

I like it!

userchanger · 15/06/2021 16:47

I like it

MaggieFS · 15/06/2021 16:47

I like it, but would expect to see it spelt Louella, however that's a different matter!

Lindy2 · 15/06/2021 16:51

I wouldn't regard it as old fashioned. I would see it as a slightly unusual, not often used name.

If you like it and I can see it has special meaning to you, then go for it. If a child has parents from different countries then an unusual name or a name popular in one of the parents' home countries wouldn't be unexpected at all.

PinkCast · 15/06/2021 17:04

I like it. As others have said, I wouldn't see it as old fashioned - it's unusual without being out there.
Lots of nickname opportunities too.

SeasonFinale · 15/06/2021 17:15

If you like those nicknames maybe you would like Eloise as her name rather than Luella?

Standrewsschool · 15/06/2021 17:18

Unusual rather than outdated.

The main female detective in the tv programme ‘Shakespeare and Hathaway’ is called Luella.

Violetlavenders · 15/06/2021 17:21

I like it. Interesting and memorable.

PattyPan · 15/06/2021 17:34

I’ve not heard it before so don’t think it sounds outdated but it seems very American so probably unusual over here. I can practically hear the southern twang!

Iwantcauliflowercheese · 15/06/2021 17:37

I know one. Always called Wellie.

Ellmau · 15/06/2021 18:19

I don't think it was ever popular here, so can't really be old fashioned. I would see it as quite an American name, but as you are, that's OK :)

Lulu is a nice nickname.

DalPalak · 15/06/2021 18:30

It doesn't sound outdated or old fashioned to me, but I just admit I prefer Lucille or Lucinda. (I've just met too many Elles and Ellas in my time.)

DalPalak · 15/06/2021 18:31

Must admit*

1000glitterydicks · 15/06/2021 18:32

I like Lucille better.

Marcipex · 15/06/2021 18:35

I prefer Lucy which is nearer to Lucille anyway.
Also, please not another Ella. Sorry and it’s a sweet name, but there are so many.

Tillygetsit · 15/06/2021 23:03

I've surprised myself by really liking Luella. I don't usually like any Lu names.

DramaAlpaca · 15/06/2021 23:07

I'm also quite surprised that I like it.

partyatthepalace · 16/06/2021 00:00

I like it! It’s got a real charm -

LittleGwyneth · 16/06/2021 12:53

I love it!

It's not a name I like, but I don't see it as old-fashioned

CandyLeBonBon · 16/06/2021 13:00

@GorekyPark

Jaysus no. Sounds like a washed up country singer with 4 exhusbands and a serious drink problem.
And your point is? 😂

This! Couldn't have put it better myself.

I like it!

myheartmysun · 16/06/2021 13:23

Worth considering that Ella is v v popular atm. I believe it's in the top 5 names for girls in England?
