It's for a middle name if DC turns out to be a girl, I understand it's the Irish version of Elizabeth? Trying to honour a few people at once and match up with DS' middle name but not sure if it's:

Eye-lish
Eye-leesh
Ay (as in hay) lish
Ay leesh

Thanks!

Why would you choose a name that even you can't pronounce?!! Surely there must be a less complicated way of honouring those you wish to honour?

It's Ail-ish in my native part of Ireland.

iklboo Sun 13-Dec-15 13:10:15

Ail-ish (friend pronounces it like this)

InanimateCarbonRod Sun 13-Dec-15 13:11:40

Ail-eesh in Cork!

What Dior and Iklboo said.

The ish pronounciation is incorrect. The fads over the i elongates the sound to ee rather than i. Lazy pronunciation grin

Fada not Fads hmm

Thank you helpful people smile

Yes inanimate thought the fada made a difference but wasn't sure

If you want it pronounced Eye-lish - spelling would be Eilis. (traditional Irish name).
If you want Eye-leesh - spelling would be Eilís.
If you want it pronounced Ay-lish - spelling would be Éilis.

I wanted eye-leesh but was finding conflicting information so glad I was on the right track! Thanks

Eye-leesh if you use the fada on the last I.

(Agree with EvaBING wrt the other options too.)

What EvaBING said.
It's a beautiful name.

A lot of Irish names are sadly stripped of their fadas in day-to-day life, in a way that I suspect names in other languages may not be.

I have a friend called Ailish pronounced I-Lish, honouring her granny Elizabeth and think its a wonderful name.
