To feel like never talking again to friend who’s just been telling me about her teenage dcs school work

Feeling thoroughly depressed after talking to friend who’s dc are 13 and 15. They’re still happily doing school work this week after an energetic warm up at 9am from joe wicks. Last 2 weeks they have been busy working 7- 8hr days.
My 2 are flat refusing to do anything school related a the moment as it’s ‘Easter holidays’Hmm They did do the work school set for the previous 2 weeks but had it all done within 3-4 hours maximum. I honestly feel utterly stressed and depressed. I was worried before about them missing school but now my stress has hit new heightsSad

Ignore it. She’s probably lying anyway.

Why are her kids doing school work during holidays? Sounds like she is showing off

Mine have done an odd half hour. Don’t worry.

They’re doing baking, gardening, fixing fences, and actually talking to me!

Her poor kids! 7-8 hrs a day is fairly hard going and it IS the Easter holidays. Yours have done what is set for them. Let them have the time off.

It’s no skin off your nose is it. You do what works for you and leave her to do the same.

A) she’s lying
B) who cares?
C) is IS Easter holidays
D) 7/8 hours is too much school work in a day.

Ok I'm primary and in Ireland but we got an email from the principals network to say do not assign work for easter.keep the rhythms of the year for the children.
Plus she's probably lying.

Just say you're all having a well-deserved break! The issue isn't really what her kids are doing, it's that you are insecure about what your kids are doing. Just let her do/ claim whatever she wants (I imagine there's some exaggeration for effect going on) and focus on you. 3-4 hours of work a day seems fine and it's now the holidays!

Definitely no skin off my nose but made me feel stressed nonetheless though I know it shouldn’t.

I don't understand. If your kids finished their day's work in 3-4 hours, then it sounds like they're bright kids on top of the curriculum. And refusing to do school work now because it's the holidays just sounds healthy to me. What are you stressed and depressed about? Am I missing something?

Yeah my friend’s daughter is the same apparently. Sitting at the kitchen table from 9-5 each day doing all her school work. Are the schools really sending that much? My Dc certainly hasn’t.

Read the Teenagers at home thread OP, there was (ie during term time) a whole lot of kids doing far less than your two, including at least one of mine. Don’t let your mad friend make you feel bad, you have absolutely nothing to feel bad about!

Mine are NOT doing ANY school work AT ALL over the Easter hols. I expect them to chill out and please themselves and do token amounts of family interaction/jobs/worthwhile pursuits.

Your friend has serious issues if she thinks anyone gives a flying fuck how much work her kids are doing. I'd just ignore. She needs to maybe realise that people have got bigger issues to worry about than the amount of school work being done by her kids. Just reply 'good for your kids 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉'

Your friend is quite sad if that is how she communicates with people.

I know someone who put on the public primary school classroom slides about what they were doing each day that their child was doing a full timetable but also allowed 10 min breaks between work. All the other kids were playing on screens, colouring in pictures, watching tv etc. and just trying to cope with the changes in routine. I'd love to see sit when the people doing the performance patently finally crack, open the wine and realise that no one gives a fuck and everyone is just trying to get through this.

It’s the holidays, the clue is in the name. My 2 have been doing the work set by school, they’re usually finished by lunchtime. They do what they like after that. We had an email from the Head saying they were to take the Easter holidays off as normal.

Let the poor souls have their holidays.

Maybe your children work harder - and smarter - in their 3 to 4 hours than hers do in 7 to 8 hours. Yours have done the work set and are enjoying the Easter holidays.

OP don't stress about this please. 3-4 hours a day is plenty. We're lucky to get that and frankly I don't push them to do more. We're just enjoying being together, cooking, watching films, getting creative etc...

And shock horror they've even had days where they've done nothing but play Fortnite talking to their mates.

Pinkblueberry · 07/04/2020 18:01

It’s Easter now, let them have a break.

Not everyone works in the same way. If you are comfortable with your choice it shouldn't matter what another factor does.
