To think some people have breath that smells like dog shit?

I was just discussing this with my husband.

Over the last fortnight, I have come across 3 people with breath so foul it smells like dog shit, or in the case of one of them - cow shit.

Can they not smell it themselves? And what is it that gives people halitosis that doesn’t just smell like stale breath, but actual shit? Is it the smell of their stomachs? I know it’s not teeth hygiene for one of them as she brushes her teeth about 6 times a day. Why don’t their families mention it? If it was one of mine, I would tell them straight away & I know they’d do the same for me.

Is it a medical condition, this breath from the abattoir? Anyone know?

Poo breath is a thing I believe. Can't remember why it happens though.

😂 no help but this made me laugh although is very mean. Haven’t come across poo breath but I know when some people don’t eat and have an empty stomach their breath can smell.

Is it maybe from tonsil stones? I’ve heard that causes revolting breath.

Probably coffee on an empty stomach combined with bad dental hygiene.

My dentist friend says she can smell it when people have dental caries and its such an awful smell.

If she brushes her teeth 6 times a day then maybe she does know and is trying to do something about it?

Liver conditions cause breath like rotten meat.

I know if I have eaten nothing at all for 16 hours or so, I have Ketone breath, but that’s not a poo smell.

Dog shit breath is a real thing. It’s medical name is feacal breath.
Most likely cause is gum disease and a lack of interdental cleaning. The plaque that builds up between the teeth even if you brush well is the most fowl smelling.
Other causes can be decay. Post nasal drip and yes, a low carb diet if you are in ketosis.
Smells from the stomach / organs causing bad breath are very rare.

I agree about the cow shit smell and some people do seem to be totally oblivious, such as my geography teacher whose breath you could smell from the back of the room but I have tonsil stones and they absolutely stink to high heaven, very difficult and painful to remove, they're reoccurring and I can't do anything to stop them coming back. I have very good dental hygiene and always keep a pack of mints on me. I am very conscious of the smell, it's mortifying, I can taste them in the back of throat if I don't do a 'clear out' every few days. I purposely talk under my breath or face away from people

My childhood dentist had the worst teeth and breath ever.
Mad me fanatical about brushing my teeth and smelling minty though!

Either can smell it and are very conscious about it or can’t because they have simply got used to the stench. Always think it about people who stink to high heavens generally but I honestly think they can’t smell it anymore in the same way you get used to the smell of your perfume.

Oh and halitosis can be caused by all manner of medical conditions. Sometimes it’s because they haven’t eaten as well, my breath gets a bit pongy when I skip breakfast.

Having a sore throat gives you bad breath, with the bacteria causing smelly breath. Maybe with the change in weather lots more people have sore throats

Probably have gum disease. They need a good scale and polish and lots of flossing.

A lot of the time it’s tonsil stones, they can definitely cause dog shit smelling breath as ex had them and so no poor thing has them, they can be kept at bay with peroxyl mouthwash gargling and removal with cotton bud or similar if you can get to them and do it without gagging, otherwise it’s a very expensive private procedure called laser ablation where they laser off the crypts where the tonsil stones lurk so the skin is smooth and the stones can’t form, but that is around £1.5k

low carb or fasting breath

my DH gets it, it smells worse for the "receiver" OP Wink

and tonsil stones, but that is more a stinky Camembert smell

My boss has just coffee and no food, and has really bad breath by lunch time ...

I used to get tonsil stones as a child. I’d squish them between my fingers then recoil at the smell!

Haven’t had one for years. Think my tonsils may have shrivelled up too much.

Death breath. Empty stomach, not flossing and coffee.

There's another fairly recent thread about tonsil stones causing a smell like this and the NHS won't remove them.

The fact that you know someone like it who brushes their teeth about 6 times per day suggests they are actually aware of it and are actively trying to do something about it.

From what I read, we should be extremely sympathetic to people suffering with this. It could happen to any one of us.

Yeah my ex husband did. He was so reluctant to clean his teeth I had to put the toothpaste on his brush and make him do it.
I took him to the hygeinist and he had 20 years of plaque taken off and with the daily regime had nice fresh breath again.
Came round the other day - we've been divorced for some years - and has monstrous breath again. And wonders why he is still single. Clearly 15 years of nagging did nothing at all.

The only one of the 3 people I mentioned that I know well, is always constipated! Can this cause it?
