AIBU?

To be so traumatised

I have been so shocked and upset by the drama Line of Duty.

I hadn't realised it was true, maybe naïvely, yes.

It was absolutely horrific the actual stuff that went on, the actual serving officers killed in the line of duty, and those that went to prison in the line of duty, all trying to uncover a massive cover up by men systematically abusing children in care homes.

Sad

Surely if you've seen the news over the last five years you'll know that the systematic abuse of young children in care was covered up for many, many years by some very high ranking people?

It can't come as a surprise that there are crooked police officers in existence. There's crooked people in every walk of life; priests, teachers, HMRC officials, you name it. The saving grace is that there are many more Police Officers who'd go the extra mile to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those they're meant to protect.

I'm confused. Line of Duty is a fictional drama.

I hadn't realised it was true, maybe naïvely, yes

It’s not true OP, it’s a tv drama. You know that right?

I am absolutely aware of the systematic atrocities taking place in our country.

Am I BU, are you saying, to be so shocked and upset by it?

I was wholly gripped and immersed in this drama.

No, I really was not aware of the level of killings and hard violence involved in protection of these police detectives, councillors, masons (who are supposed to be do-gooders), and the impact of that when combined with such powerful drama with such amazing acting

I hadn't realised that line of duty was reality!! and not seen that depravity and violence brought to screen so powerfully, not knowing it was real.

I am not stupid, and ignorant, but I am shocked and upset.

So IABU then you are saying?

Err... it’s not true.

Yes, at the end of each season the little bits of text come up about each character, but it’s all fictitious.

AdobeWanKenobi · 11/03/2019 14:36

They have thrown references in there to real life cases (saville being one) and the end of season 'what happened to' segments are a bit real life but its still not real.

But it's a TV show, fictional

Definitely don’t watch Fargo then...

This was about real people and it listed the outcomes at the end of the recent series of episodes that I binge watchdx yesterday.

It showed the man who went to prison, showed the grave of the woman who was killed, showed pics of Jimmy saville with these perps.

It stated who got what, and the award that the actual AC unit detective won.

Was that all fake?

Why are you so shocked and upset about a fictional drama?

I’m a detective and it bears no resemblance to my work.

I love it though. It’s my favourite ever drama.

Report
Nicknacky · 11/03/2019 14:41

The updates are pretend. Please tell me you don’t actually think it’s real?

Report
AdobeWanKenobi · 11/03/2019 14:42

Yes OP. It's fake. There is no AC 12, there was no pedophile ring, no woman killed etc
Its a drama. It has no basis in fact other than pulling the odd reference to Saville.

Bless! the end plays out like real life summaries, but that's all part of the drama.
Other references to real life were the fat MP, Dale Roach. Reminded me VERY much of Rochdale (DaleRoach - geddit?) MP Cyril Smith, who died before prosecution for child rape. So fictional, but alluding to what goes on in the real world.

'Inspired by', might sum it up

My favourite, too Nicknacky.

During the long interrogation scene in the last series, I was so gripped that I kept forgetting to breathe. I was actually holding my breath, it was so tense.

Bloody brilliant writing, production and direction, and superb acting that is very naturalistic.

oh dear OP - it is very gripping but it isn't real

Report
Smotheroffive · 11/03/2019 14:52

I've just been googling, and it seems that there is a lot of news interest in the drama 'tricking' viewers into thinking its real.

I hadn't thought it was real, had been viewi g it as an amazing and gripping drama, phenomenal, and totally deserves its following and award-winning status, but all the 'facts' listed at the end were the problem.

It was very much a Blair witch project

At the end of actual life events that have been fictionalised these facts appear, in order to bring the audience up to date with the actual lives of those involved, and its a sick trick.

It was unnecessary, and I have now found loads of press articles on it.

It's a shit trick.

Meantime, yes, its still an awesome piece of drama.

I’m confused...

So you thought it was fictional

Then you thought it was real

And now you think it’s fictional?

Report
Tomtontom · 11/03/2019 14:57

The papers that reported some fans were tricked were the likes of The Sun and The Express, which says more about their readership than anything else!

It's not a shit trick OP. Most people can tell the difference between fact and fiction.

(Oh and the same team were behind The Bodyguard, but don't worry, the Home Secretary has not been murdered.)

There’s a new series coming out soon OP.

This thread isn't for real, surely?

Did you think it was a documentary? Have you never seen any of the actors in stuff before? Or did you think, say, Men Behaving Badly was also a fly on the wall documentary, and one of the men in that was undercover perhaps?

Report
Nicknacky · 11/03/2019 15:01

“Sick trick”...it’s a drama, it’s supposed to be dramatic! That’s kinda the point.

Report
Grace212 · 11/03/2019 15:03

this is one of the dramas I keep meaning to catch up with

if I'm understanding OP correctly, the end has updates on characters and updates on real people, and some viewers got confused and thought characters were real people?

Report
Tomtontom · 11/03/2019 15:03

I sit near Vicky McClure at football. I wonder if she's got a machine gun under her coat Wink
